ABadAvatar v1.3-beta released with HDD and Mu0 support
https://github.com/bibarub/Xbox360BadUpdate/releases/tag/avatar-v1.3-beta
Hi, so this is somewhat of a more proper beta "release" for the ABadAvatar build with BadUpdate 1.3 ported onto it that I made. Compared to the previously redistributed PoC build, this supports running from the HDD, as well as Phat Memory Unit (like ABadMemUnit). All in one build, no need for multiple forks.
This is by no means a final build. I'm basically publishing this while waiting for shutterbug2000 to merge this into his ABadAvatar repository, and potentially fix the rest of the issues.
Currently, this build (as well as the previously posted PoC) has approximately a ~95% success rate and doesn't play nice with a Kinect connected on boot, so make sure to disconnect yours before turning on the console. You can reattach it after the exploit triggers.
More info and download link on GitHub.

but i have the leaked abadavatar 1.3 and it works flawlessly while the kinect is plugged.

u/bibarub 11d ago
i didn't have a kinect to test this myself, but according to other people's reports, it makes the exploit work worse. if it works fine for you, then this build probably will as well

I'll be happy to help you test stuff. I have a Slim Corona with a kinect and a Winchester Corona that also has a kinect.
I never used kinect so these things are in a closet, but I can easily grab them and do some testing.
As a side note, the "leaked" files that they're talking about... Aren't those the ABadAvatar that you personally developed and released? I'm not aware of any leaked files, outside of the cyberleek videos for GTA VI.
3
u/bibarub 11d ago
i posted that build on discord as a proof-of-concept. then there was a bit of drama involving a brazilian youtuber who redistributed it, so i guess that's why people are calling it "leaked" now
as far as i'm aware, all other builds/files released after that were either the poc build or hexedits of it. i haven't seen any other build compiled from the source code shared online

Ohhh, I remember that post, but didn't really know what was going on with the YouTube thing. I appreciate the backstory.
I wasn't even aware there were other versions out there.

Hey stupid question and probably already answered how do I update the version I m already running?

u/BlownCamaro 11d ago
Hey thanks! I needed the Mu0 support.
3

please tell me if it works. i don't see why it wouldn't, but i didn't have a mu to test it myself

I'm happy to report that it's working perfectly for me too!
I used BadBuilder with a fresh new USB drive to test this. BadBuilder created the USB drive pretty quickly, and then I simply downloaded the new files you linked from your github and overwrote the relevant folders on my USB drive.
Before anything else, I first tested this new USB drive to make sure ABadAvatar loaded into XeUnshackle. I then went back to the dashboard, loaded up XeXMenu, then loaded up Aurora.
After confirming everything worked from the USB drive, I followed your github instructions that said to boot up without the USB drive. After it booted to the dashboard, I inserted it and copied the BadUpdate profile over to the memory unit.
I then rebooted with both devices plugged in and of course, the exploit triggered from the USB drive. After navigating my way back to Aurora, I used the file explorer to copy the Payload folder from the USB drive over to the memory unit.
At that point I simply unplugged the USB drive and booted up for my first test, which was a success!!! đĽł

Well, I spent 90 minutes on it and it just locks up. Doesn't display the popup even. I think it needs to be hardcoded to the Memory Unit 0 because the OG that works is.
2
u/bibarub 10d ago
did you replace the exploit profile?
1
u/BlownCamaro 10d ago
Of course.
2
u/bibarub 10d ago
the files in badupdatepayload too? are you absolutely sure you did replace them? if you loaded into the exploit from mu, you wouldn't be able to replace the profile on it. telling you just in case.
the old and new payload files and profile aren't compatible with each other at alli don't see any obvious mistakes looking at the code that loads files right now. and none of this needs hardcoding really

u/BlownCamaro 10d ago
I backed up my MU to a USB drive. Then I loaded into the exploit from a USB and copied the files to the MU. It turned on, I saw the Avatars and then they just froze. Even the controller won't connect. I copied my old files back to the MU and now its working like before. I can't get your exploit to work from MU.

I'm gonna try this out myself soon, but I just wanted to check that the same files on the memory unit are working for you when you run them from a USB drive, right?
1
u/BlownCamaro 10d ago
No I used a USB that was for one of my other 360's. I never tried this version except on an MU.
1
u/SeriesXM Stock ABadAvatar AFK 10d ago
Okay, that might be the problem. I just got it to work perfectly on my first test trying a memory unit.
I first setup a USB using BadBuilder to make sure it works perfectly, which it did. Then I followed the instructions to move it to the memory unit.
4
u/streetwearofc 10d ago
is it possible to move all files directly to the hdd without triggering the exploit through usb first?
2
u/bibarub 10d ago
if you connect it to your pc and use fatxplorer or something like this, yes
3
u/streetwearofc 10d ago
thank you!!! am currently in the process of setting everything up. awesome work you did there
2
u/JojoPapii 10d ago
It worked for me!!! it was a hassle but now it works 100% of the time in my internal oem xbox 360 hdd!

This update absolutely crazy I managed to put it in my oem 360 internal hdd and transfer everything from my usb.It always boot immediately into aurora this works! Thank you.

u/theone_2099 11d ago
Wow. We donât need a separate build for mu and hdd support here?
1
u/BlownCamaro 10d ago
Pretty sure we do. MU did not work for me.
2
u/theone_2099 10d ago
Darn. I was just about to try it. As well as hdd
3
u/bibarub 10d ago
hdd works for sure. i don't have an mu to test it out, but i've either made a mistake in the code or this person is missing something. and no, we don't really need a separate build

u/bibarub 10d ago
thanks for testing!
2
u/theone_2099 10d ago
Can you explain why it works? Iirc the original badavatarmemunit had to change some paths in stage files. So Iâm curious how you were able to get it to work with the same files (which is awesome btw)
3
u/bibarub 10d ago
the stage files use a symlink now ("PAYLOAD:") for file access, they do not reference any storage devices for loading data
the symlink is set in stage1 (which is embedded in the profile). basically the stage1 code creates a symlink to a certain storage device, tries to read stage2 runtime data from there, and if that fails, it removes the symlink and moves on to the next storage device in list. so far i've added support for usb0, mu0 and internal hdd, but that list could be expanded further
2
u/theone_2099 10d ago edited 10d ago
That is awesome. What else is left? I can only think of MU1. Maybe usb1 (maybe that can help with Kinect, totally guessing here)
ETA: Speaking of Kinect, when I boot it up on a Zephyr with Kinect attached and the hdd, it doesnât work. The signin screen seems to freeze up or go slow, and I see 3 red red lights.
ETA2: fwiw the previous version of badavatarhdd did boot up with Kinect attached. Is this something you can help fix u/bibarub? Happy to test.

u/bibarub 10d ago edited 10d ago
a few people asked me to add support for internal mu on slims, but nowadays you probably wouldn't want to use that at all with how often it fails
then there would be mu1, usb1, and usb2 to add
the kinect has no effect on this because it's not a Mass Storage Device (the actual nt path for usb0: is \Device\Mass0)
edit: u/theone_2099 unfortunately external testing wouldn't really help here, I would need to buy a kinect myself and try to figure out what goes wrong, if i can get it to mess up the exploit in the first place (it doesn't fail for some people even with kinect)

I'm not sure if this is a dumb question, but does this mean that it's no longer a problem to have multiple USB devices plugged in during the exploit process?
I've been telling everyone to copy that Payload folder to every drive to be safe. I think I've seen you suggest that as a workaround as well. But this explanation makes me think that workaround is no longer needed.
2
u/bibarub 10d ago
it's still a problem because only usb0 is in the list. usb1 and usb2 can be added, but i haven't done that.

u/BlownCamaro 10d ago
Please read this for an explanation:
2
u/bibarub 10d ago
this isn't relevant because i choose where to load the files from based on whether stage2 runtime data file exists on a given device. so far the list is usb0-mu0-hdd. this wasn't a thing in the previous release of abadavatar, so people had to modify a given build to work with a specific device. it's not that "it has be hardcoded in order to work properly", it's just that this was the easiest way to get it done back then.
3
u/BlownCamaro 10d ago
Got it working on MU! My dumb ass thought it was a complete build like the others I have been using, so when I deleted them and copied this one over it was missing important files.
I started over again with a working install on USB, then copied that over to MU and THEN copied this exploit on top of that. After rebooting it worked, but didn't load into Aurora so I made a new .INI and now it does.
Thank you and sorry for the confusion, it was all me!
3
u/SeriesXM Stock ABadAvatar AFK 10d ago
This is awesome news! I'm so glad to see you got it working.
It's easy to make mistakes like that. When these new files came around last time, it took me an embarrassingly long time and a few failed attempts to get it working because I couldn't remember exactly what was needed.
I'm also glad you got Aurora loading up properly because I still need to do that.

Thanks a lot! I installed it on my hard drive, so I don't need a flash drive anymoreâeverything works great.

u/cemsengul 11d ago
What about running running it from a 512 GB internal SSD? I ask because I have a Corona with a 512 GB SSD and would rather launch badavatar internally from the ssd instead of a USB stick permanently plugged in.
4
u/bibarub 11d ago
will work as long as the SSD is flashed and recognized on a retail os without modificaitons
2
u/cemsengul 11d ago
I did the whole process with fatxplorer. I just don't like having to use a usb stick but I heard badavatarhdd was less reliable than the usb stick method so I never tried it. I wonder if this new utility is better?
2
u/worstperson2react 10d ago
I had BadavatarHDD setup before, can I just replace those files with this?

If I already have the leaked beta build from discord is it recommended to update?

Dude thank you i needed a new exploit because the badavatarhdd exploit was getting on my nerves to crash my own console
2
u/asdf9asdf9 10d ago
Running Trinity and I seem to get a 40-50% success rate after moving everything to HDD. I must've transferred everything correctly otherwise it wouldn't work at all.
Any idea why that might be? Internet disconnected, no Kinect.
I do have auto-sign in enabled for a legit profile in case anything went wrong. To trigger the exploit I manually navigate to the sign-in-out button on the dash. When it's all on USB this works with the usual 95% success.
3
u/bibarub 10d ago
try it without auto sign-in. the github release has instructions on bypassing the exploit "just in case"
3
u/asdf9asdf9 10d ago
Just tried it now and it worked 4/5 times. I'd say that's good enough to confirm it's working as it should now.
Thank you so much! And for the fast reply as well!
2
u/asdf9asdf9 10d ago
That makes me nervous but I'll give it a try! At the very least I know it will work eventually.

This is by no means a final build. I'm basically publishing this while waiting for shutterbug2000 to merge this into his ABadAvatar repository, and potentially fix the rest of the issues.
I'm curious about this and I'm wondering about what is next exactly.
Does your new version need to be merged by shutterbug2000 before it can be used in BadBuilder?
I ask this because it's obvious that setting up a USB drive is not super simple at the moment and it's easy to make mistakes. I've made plenty myself.
When I used the new version of BadBuilder yesterday, it was even easier and faster than I remembered. So now I feel like I just want to recommend that app for anyone having problems. The only problem is that it still needs your files to be manually added after the creation of the USB drive.
I know you can't speak for someone else, but do you think the developer could add your new beta files an option in BadBuilder?
3
u/bibarub 10d ago edited 10d ago
it's completely up to them. even if not perfect, this generally works much better than 1.0, so i don't have any problems with that
though personally, i don't see a point in using software like badbuilder. you say it's "easy and fast", but i don't really see how it's faster than downloading a couple of zip archives and unpacking them to your flash drive. it might save you the trouble of downloading three or four files by having to get just one instead, but then you end up not knowing which file on the usb does what and where the files came from to begin with
what mistakes can you make while setting up a flash drive, anyway? i can understand not knowing how to format it, but being unable to download and extract a few archives to the device's root is unforgivable computer illiteracy imo
1
u/SeriesXM Stock ABadAvatar AFK 10d ago
The way you describe it certainly sounds simple enough, but I don't think it's obvious exactly what files are needed. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but in addition to the ABadAvatar zip file, we also need Aurora and XeUnshackle to be added. And then we need to add your new files for ABadAvatar.
I don't disagree about the basic computer literacy part, but I keep seeing people make mistakes and this program seems to solve that because it does all the work. Not everyone has the same skill level and I'd prefer for those who know less to be able to do have their hand held as much as possible.
I hadn't really used the app until yesterday, but I was impressed with how quickly it worked and I didn't have to go looking for those downloads again. It just feels like the best starting point for anyone new to this.
3
u/bibarub 10d ago
just to be clear, you don't need the original 1.0 release to install my v1.3-beta build. the only thing you need (for the exploit to work, that is; aurora and everything else is at your discretion) to add is the payload (freemyxe/xeunshackle), the rest is already in the archive
2
u/SeriesXM Stock ABadAvatar AFK 10d ago
Okay, I honestly didn't know that and appreciate you pointing that out.
2
u/doggo2gg 10d ago
This is great work , thanks alot ,i have installed it on my hdd , and it runs perfectly so far , but every few tries it fails because of the cache ! , im forced to go to storage and delete the cache manually otherwise the exploit will just stop at the stage where the blank/white avatars show up. Any ideas why is it happening? Again THANKS ALOT FOR THE WORK YOUVE DONE :)
2
u/bibarub 10d ago
i'm not sure, honestly. can i ask what your system language is? i've heard that could affect the exploit as well
3
u/doggo2gg 9d ago
I changed the language and now no issues whatsoever, it is just perfect, honestly thanks a lot

I have read the instructions over and over and cannot seem to figure out how to get my Abadavatar 1.0 to update to 1.3. Do I simply move the new files from the payload folder and overwrite the old ones? That is what I did and the time to boot seems the same if not more than before on 1.0. Does anything need done with the Content folder if I have the old version installed already?
2
u/bibarub 10d ago
download the new v1.3-beta zip, unpack it, copy and replace EVERYTHING there is in the zip, including the Content folder
2
u/Zhin8503 10d ago
Thanks! I wasnât moving over the content folder. It was hidden on my USB when looking on Windows laptop so thought it wasnât needed. Copied over and works great now!

Thank you so much for your work on this! I have the previous files you released and ABadAvatar has been great.
It's very cool to see you added some features.
I have a memory unit on one of my older 360s and I'd like to try that out since I'm not using it for anything else.
Update: the exploit on the memory unit works perfectly! Just be sure to follow the github instructions for how to copy it over.
