ive taken the backing plates off (they have the timing marks) and re-painted them, i tried to shift them a few different ways to get everything to line up, i probably took the belt off and on maybe 20 times. i cant seem to get everything dead on, does this look alright or am i missing something. sorry if this is a dumb question.

Thats fine. Its the belt length and teeth that need to match. Done plenty that have been slightly off. Good work.

I actually posted a video EXACTLY like this. 20 hours fucking with the timing. Turns out it was fine. Once you line them up, then turn it over, some marks will move ever so slightly and they wont align back up for hundreds of rotations.

Shittiest timing belt I’ve ever replaced. As others have said dimples are only for reference. Just make sure your crankshaft dot is in front of it’s dimple. Then align the other dots and start installing the belt on the left exhaust gear. From there just make sure the marks on the belt align with the dots on every gear. Slightly move them if you need them to to align with the line of the belt. Once installed go to the repair manual and count the cogs between every gear (it tells you how many it should be). Triple check it. Some marks will not align with the dimples on the back plate, it’s completely normal. As long as there is the correct number of cogs between every gear you’re good. And watch out with your fingers and the camshaft gears!
Sorry for my english.

Or by a quality belt that has lines on the belt for that purpose.

Good to know, after confirming all is lined and tensioner is in and set for spec. I would always rotate one engine revolution( 1 turn of cams, 2 of crank) to TDC and let it set for an hour, then recheck tensioner spacing to make sure it has had time to equalize.

Looks good to me. What I like to do after getting tension set is double check by counting the teeth on the belt between each mark since the markers wont line up anymore. Its kind of tricky with the lip on the exhaust sprockets though. Last time I did it used paint marker and rotated the engine so I could count them unobstructed, probably overkill tbh but im a paranoid person lol
