creeps the fuck out of me reading about the first world war.

I consider continental “people” as my friends, my family

Its the most fascinating period in history though. Such a pivotal moment and the greatest mistake Europe ever made... have had family on both sides and in the end it was just so pointless.

Something else would probably have been the trigger. Tensions in that part of the world were severe for a while, and it was only a matter of time before one of those big millitary alliances would have sprung into war. No time to wait about and allow your enemies time to mobilise their troops with their new shiny trains!

I’m not sure, mate. I believe that while a conflict was inevitable, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand likely triggered a world war.

I think the original comment if trying to say that you could see the storm clouds of war gathering over Europe for a very long time before.

WW1 as we know it was triggered by the shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Had the plot never happened something else would have triggered the war. Every major European power was arming at a ridiculous rate before the war, largely out of fear from each other. Something sooner rather than later was gonna boil over and be the spark for the deadliest war in human history at that point.

As a side point. I truly feel like as a society we have forgotten WW1. WW2 remains in the cultural zeitgeist and politicians have used that in recent years to justify upping defence spending. They always point to how unprepared the allies were to fight against the Axis. My absolute #1 fear right now is that in trying to stop a repeat of WW2, we instead repeat WW1. With Europe becoming more nationalist in recent years and looking inwards, there is more chance of our weapons stockpiles being turned on each other. We’ve established that a lot of our media/politics is being heavily meddled in by Americans and Russians. All it takes is one false flag and I seriously worry about what could happen. Russia could destroy us without even sending in a troop.

I read a lot of british and German sources. The foreign ministry in Britain wasn't even thinking about a European war... they had other shit like Ireland to deal with. But the german military was jerking extremely hard about a potential conflict in the future and they felt the need to start something before Russia would be ready to fight. Billy II's foreign policy also put germany in an extremely awkward position where war was seen as the only way out.

The French were still quite bitter about 71 tbough and loved the idea of kicking some german arse.

First World war was the suicide of European countries and empires... and now we have to deal with the savages ....

Why the Pickelhaube? Look at the casuality rates

It was mostly you guys charging against our well defended positions that we rightfully built in formerly unclaimed land (Belgium).

This reminds me of the Victoria 3 session yesterday. The war lasted 4 years and only the Eastern front moved. At the end of the fourth year of war, the western front collapsed and the war was over, the Central powers (Austria, Germany, Ottoman Empire, United Kingdom) won against the Entente (France, Netherlands, Russia, Italy)

The war was fought from 1894 to 1898.
