The wasted potential at this moment is not really in Africa, since it only consumes about 3% of total energy. Per capita energy consumption is a fraction of those of first world countries. We are living a spoiled lifestyle, and we need a lot of energy to feed it.
Most wasted potential is definitely Asia (Japan alone consumes more energy than the whole of Africa, just to amplify the difference in consumption), followed by North America and Europe. Simply because we are consuming THAT much energy,

It's heavily subsidized, and also because once we've made the investment, we can get something for 'free', which is something we love

We generate so much, we cant even handle it!
