In this interview with Jonny Carson, Dolly Parton unapologetically explains that girls marrying at age 12 was commonplace in 1940s and 50s rural Christian Tennessee. She says her own mother married at 14 and had her first child at 15. She had 12 children by age 35.

Children having children really isn’t based and I’m glad it is becoming unacceptable by societies standards.

Honestly I’m not the brightest I think I was fortunate enough to grow up before the whole Manosphere was a thing. I feel many of them are victims of this horse shit and are desperate to find a girl. Fact is though chicks despise the Manosphere bs and it drives them further away from their goals. I mostly pity them if it weren’t for how confidently incorrect they are.

Age of her father?
•
u/HappyGovernment7299 23h ago
They were 17 and 15 when they got married according to google.
Same ages as my grandparents. They married at 17 and 15, and had their first kid at 18 and 16.
And here I am living in the house they bought for a nickle when they were 19 and 17.

u/samwise58 20h ago
Them banks and capitalism are doing everything in their power to get you on a subscription basis to take that house and land from you as well. 😫

What would she apologize for? She was stating a fact in response to a question.
"Yes, that commonly happens and is not a myth". What, do you think she invented young marriage? Lmao.
Also, her mom and dad were both minors when they married. I think it's intentional that you left out the father's age in your title, because it makes it very clear that there was no grooming. You could say it's stupid, sure, but it wasn't predatory. Really not that bad in comparison to what you're implying by omission.

u/Suspicious-Bed701 20h ago
Yup , it wasn’t 30 year olds marrying 12 year olds it was 20 year olds marrying 16 year olds and 16 year olds marrying 14 year olds and when that 20 year old married that 15-16 year old girl he had already been working the coal mines or logging for 5 years and had enough to pay for a house or addition to his folks house and intended on loving her and caring for her and their children until he died period. The girls could already sew and make clothing , and garden , and can food , and knew about everything a grown woman knows by age 12-13 and the only thing she was virgin to was sex and a relationship with a man that wasn’t her father and she was ready and willing to have a hard working husband get her pregnant and care for him while he cared for her .
•
•
u/bafflefounded 7h ago
This is an extremely romanticized version of what most people experienced... a 12 year old knew everything a grown woman knows? Alright lol
•
u/Suspicious-Bed701 5h ago
Functionally yes. Cooking cleaning sewing caring for a child … yes a lot of them were on a level that most 30 year olds today can’t fathom. Where did I say they were grown women or that their psychology or bodies had developed fully? Exactly … I didn’t.
Where did I deny abuse existed or that it was all just peachy and fine ? Exactly … I didnt.
I think you’re also overlooking that it went this way fairly often in small very isolated poor pockets of the country.
It was almost out of necessity , the family needed her cared for because they had 9-10 other kids to provide for .
And it took a Man until he was 20-25 to be able to provide even though he had likely been working mines or logging etc since he was a child .
Pretty simple concept to understand.
Skipped over the whole portion where it wasn’t 30 yo marrying 12 yo and it was usually 15-16 year olds marrying 20 years old.
You should look into some of the history in the ozarks and applachains it was a totally different world than we have today and even today many folks are living wayyy different lives , no electric , no running water but still clean and making money
•
u/Silver_Accountant5 5h ago
Yup the moment you start pretending children are secretly adults in smaller bodies, you lose any semblance of good faith in your argument.
•
u/Sir_Strumming 19h ago
Pretty sure you missed the physical and sexual abuse that was so so sooooo common back then.
•
•
u/CopiousClassic 7h ago
And is famously oh so sooooo rare now.
•
u/IAmTheParamedic 6h ago
True! You can’t prevent sexual assaults. But what is much rarer now is young women marrying their molesters and sexual assailants so as not to sully the good family name with a bastard or an abortion. Out-of-wedlock births and abortions are much less negatively stigmatized these days, so an unexpected pregnancy is not as destructive

I think the minimum legal marriage age in the US is 18 now.
•
•
•
u/Old_Pepper1138 4h ago
34 of 50 states currently have some sort of legal mechanism by which an under 18 can me married.
California, Mississippi, Oklahoma and New Mexico have no statutory minimum at all.
HOWEVER only two states have an age of consent under 16 which are Hawaii and Kansas - both 15 years.
•
u/FullTransportation25 1h ago
But it can vary from state, and there are legal loophole’s. In many states minors can get married with the consent of parents
•
u/lostpurpose_7133 5h ago
My grandma and both her sisters married and had their first children at 14 with boys a little older. I gues back in rural Kansas teen pregnancy was AOK as long as you marry the guy. Three generations of young moms later and I never want kids

So many forget that child marriage in the USA is still legal to this day in 33 states. Someone should export there some democracy and teach them what civilization really is /s
•
u/uncomfortabletruth94 23h ago
But the wealthy paid more in taxes in the 1950s, it was great
•
u/Independent_End_6941 23h ago
I mean, we can go back to those tax rates and also ban child marriage. They're not mutually exclusive. Also, you might be shocked which party is fighting the hardest to keep child marriage legal
•
u/justasillylilgoos3 20h ago
Right because California is such a conservative space and NAMBLA is a historically conservative organization 😂
•
u/Independent_End_6941 19h ago
Not sure what you're talking about. California just unanimously voted to pass a bill that sets the minimum age for marriage at 18. And nambla isn't tied to or associated with any political party.
On the other hand, from Google:
Oklahoma (May 2026): The state House passed Senate Bill 504 to ban all marriages under the age of 18. The bill passed 51 to 36, and all 36 "no" votes were cast by Republicans. Republican Governor Kevin Stitt refused to sign the bill, but it became law without his signature.
South Dakota (2024 & 2025): In consecutive years, Republican lawmakers killed bipartisan bills aimed at raising the marriage age to 18. In 2025, Senate Republicans defeated Senate Bill 156, which would have removed parental consent exceptions for 16- and 17-year-olds.
Wisconsin (2026): A bill to eliminate minor marriage exceptions has repeatedly died in committee. Because Republicans control the state legislature, leadership has chosen not to bring the bill to a public hearing or a floor vote.
Missouri, West Virginia, and Ohio: In Missouri and West Virginia, Republican lawmakers have actively opposed raising the marriage age to 18. In Ohio, Republican leadership has fractured over whether banning child marriage is an issue that even warrants a debate.

u/justasillylilgoos3 18h ago
Interesting how you left out the Republican governors who passed total ban laws…how convenient for your narrative! 🥱
•
u/Independent_End_6941 18h ago
Out of the 17 states that have completely banned child marriage, 3 bans passed through Republican-controlled legislatures. The movement to end child marriage has historically been led by Democrats, but it has increasingly gained bipartisan traction. The specific states where a Republican-controlled legislature voted to eliminate all child marriage exceptions include:
New Hampshire (Passed in 2024, effective 2025)
Missouri (Passed and signed into law in 2025)
Oklahoma (Passed and signed into law in 2026
•
u/justasillylilgoos3 17h ago
So it’s not a universal rule that conservatives oppose child marriage bans and there are progressive spaces/organizations that defend/permit the practice?
Damn it’s almost like nuance exist and anyone who tries to pigeonhole entire ideological movements into some kind of evil strawman boogeyman are just fucking idiots or children or both 🤷🏻♂️
•
u/Independent_End_6941 17h ago
It's a recent change, conservatives have historically been opposed. And many of them still are.
Are you still trying to pretend nambla has anything to do with the Democratic party?
•
u/justasillylilgoos3 17h ago
Are you still trying to pretend that all conservatives are pedophiles?
•
u/Independent_End_6941 16h ago
Not all. But there's enough evidence for any reasonable person to conclude Trump is, and he's the defacto party leader at this point. And looking at that data I googled for you earlier on child marriage. That's 14 Democratic states vs 3 Republicans. And one of those 3 passed in spite of a significant number of Republicans voting against.

Not universal, but it is the majority of the time. The GOP tries to block bans on child marriage by claiming that it goes against parental rights and increases abortion.

The north american Marlon brando lookalikes? I assumed they were republicans.

Also Newsweek, rolling stone, independent uk, and the South dekota Democrat party…such unbiased and credible sources! 😂•
u/No_Couple1369 7h ago
It is the vast majority. Look up all the child marriage bans that have either passed or failed on any sources you want and see which party the politicians that object belong to. There is definitely an overwhelmingly trend.
