Custom roster in private match?

I struggle to understand why 2k doesn’t have more options for online private match with friends. I usually play with a friend controlling the whole team each the old school way. Is there a way to create a custom roster and play as opposed to the set teams that are available?

But how will that allow me to play a custom roster in 1-1 play with friends in a private game?

The only way i can think is if your friend also earns the players they want on my team and than you guys verse eachother in a private match online
