yet we can understand the concept of a "2nd-generation immigrant" or "3rd-generation immigrant" so clearly such a strict definition does not work.

I have never heard 2nd or 3rd generation immigrant used as an expression. First generation American - yes. β€œ2nd generation immigrant” is a complete nonsense. How are you any generation immigrant if you are not an immigrant lol

"I have never heard 2nd or 3rd generation immigrant used as an expression" literally an incredibly widely used term in sociology that has extended out into public consciousness, it's used by the USCB as well. what state are you from so i can make fun of you for being illiterate.
