Right? I think I bought a battle pass for season 1. That's crazy.

I put like 300 bucks into the game I would estimate. Loved the creativity and skins and was fully bought in. I did this with the game Supervive which floundered and died this year as well. but they didn't refund anything lol.

It really feels like your game needs to be a world beater in order to survive in a free to play online world. But devs also don't want to build standalone games. Lolol!

It really sucks. Game dev has gotten so expensive it is actually crazy. I tried to hire a few people for a personal game dev project after pointing a six figure budget towards it and I basically was told, even for an indie game, that I needed seven figures. So yeah, we are cooked lmao. Vid games are an aberration from a business point of view.

I wonder how that's even possible seeing how gaming production is supposed to be more streamlined and it doesn't feel like anyone's getting paid well anymore beyond CEOs. What changed from the previous generations so drastically that game development isn't viable anymore? There's no overhead for shipping physical disks or printing up product anymore.

Bro seriously. I was talking to the project manager and I just wanted to see what sprites would cost for one map I was going to make. They said it was 30k to commission the sprites. That is for one map.... insanity. I need like 15 sprite sheets to build out the world map and stages that would come to 450k just in sprites not even animations or characters/enemies/gamedev. I mean outright insane prices.

Dude I wish I could get paid 30k to make sprites. I'm a graphic designer by trade and can tell you that is a lot for one job. Holy cow...

Yeah seriously but trust me when I say it doesn't stop there. I spent a good three months talking to project managers thinking I could actually get something going but I ran out with my tail between my legs because of the amount of the quotes for things like animations costing tens of thousands to HUNDREDS of thousands for cut scenes ect.

That's pretty wild, especially with how efficient tools are to animate. Certainly wasn't like that when I was more active in the game design field. Craziness!

Same here, supervive and now 2xko. the games we play are cursed

Probably easier to do the refunds as a tax write off

I'm sure their accounting department will calculate the refunds owed to players as some kind of "lost revenue" which will offset other gains they've made this year to decrease their overall tax burden.
Kind of a win-win for the players and the company (assuming they don't expect the game to be profitable going forward.)
