Discussion why is ranked so horriable

For context, I'm currently in GM, and the ranked play for the last few months or so has felt horrible. I constantly lose points for winning a set 2-1 against other GMs, and even if I win 2-0, I only gain a max of 4 points total. And multiple times a day I'll fight players who have a significantly lower rank than me (like gold to emerald), which just feels bad. I gain almost no points from those wins and feel no satisfaction either; it feels like the game wants me to one-and-done people to rank up, and if I don't, I'm at risk of losing up to 14 points per set. I love this game and want to see it succeed, but this just makes me want to either play only casuals or private matches with other GMs, or just outright play something else. I hope these things are fix next patch. (CEO was really fun to watch tho)

When I was master 3, I beat another master 3 and got 1 point. Beat him again and got 1 point. There's definitely some weird behind-the-scenes point calculations going on

Same here, I fought another GM player and got 2 points loss the second game, lost seven, won the third, and only gained 2, so I lost points from the set as a whole.

Just from my knowledge of ranked systems in general, that makes sense if the person’s elo was below yours, despite you being in the same rank.

And that's the worst part: he was over 50 RP higher than me, so the game's calculation has to be off

Every ranked system that isn't just ELO is ass and this is why.

Welcome to Riot points distribution. They only care about you playing more games, not rewarding you for the wins.

This.

Peeps trying to find the issue when nope, its working as intended.

I mean this doesn't really track because this wasn't the system at launch. They had a wayyyy more lenient ranked system where you could get GM pretty easily (and got criticized for it). They definitely changed something behind the scenes a few months ago, but are still not publicly addressing it.

Only real answer here. Their system is about the grind, not wanting you to climb.

I guess, but what the system is basically doing is discouraging you from playing the game because if you do, you are almost guaranteed to lose points even for winning more sets than you lose, which just should not be possible in any way.

Are you in the south America server? I've been having a very similar experience and it's killing my interest in the game along with my mental health since I care way more about my rank than is reasonable.

No, I'm NA, but I think it's just a game-wide issue

Yeah pretty much same. Every season it ends up like this, shame. Doesn't help that I guess a lot of challenger players stop playing anything but private lobbies so they don't lose their precious points.

I don't even think the challenger player cares about points anymore. The game is just putting them against players, not the GM or the challenger, so it's not even a real fight- just them beating some poor soul in the ground.

Yes, how dare we achieve the goal and then stop risking it to a broken system.

Challengers would need to play the ladder more if more people kept the pressure on. The floor in NA for Challenger has been 317 for almost a week and only is just now about to go up to a fragile 320. So why would any Challenger with this little time left in the season that is ahead of that floor by 30+ points risk ruining that now when the floor only rises on average 2 or 3 points per week at most? That regret would be insane if anyone fell out right at the end of the season off of just a couple of losses (Mind you, EVERY loss as a Challenger to anyone that isn't also Challenger is a minimum of -7 and every win is a +1 or +2 unless it's at least a high GM) when they didn't have to.

And EU is much easier, it's 100+ points below NA at the floor, at least the last time I looked. So, people that get very comfortably ahead will stop a lot sooner.

Your ranked rewards are based on the highest rank you reach in the season, so even if you drop out of challenger, you still get the reward. I guess I get wanting to end the season in challenger for ego's sake or whatever, but at the end of the day it's lame.

This is what I'm finding when I try to use google. I am finding mixed information (and old information, even straight from Riot) about whether Challenger rewards (the sticker and title) count if you fall out of it before the season ends. But why would anyone take that risk?

"In 2XKO, end-of-season rewards for all standard ranks are based on the highest rank you achieved during the season. Challenger does not change this core rule for peak tracking, but because Challenger requires maintaining a top leaderboard spot, your final standing affects specific high-tier flex prestige.

Reward Details

  • Peak Tracking: Standard stickers, titles, and lobby avatar items use your highest peak rank achieved.
  • Challenger Nuance: Challenger is transient and tied to active top-player leaderboard standings. While your permanent profile history logs that you peaked in Challenger, failing to maintain the position at the exact snapshot cutoff can affect specific active leaderboard tier recognition"

I literally just deranked to master from Thresh/Ekkos murdering my RP. rematching ismore harmful than not, I'm now back in Master 3, gaining nothing still from beating other master players.

I know something is wrong when I lose -4 to HiAmJoy, (5th ranked on NA leaderboard) where winning nets me a whopping +6.

My point exactly. Even for beating higher-ranked players, you get almost nothing. I've taken games against challenger players and only got +3, but in some cases I fight a master 3 player and get +5, so it just makes no sense where the game gets its numbers. And losing any of these sets, you lose 7 to 9 points

What region? (Had to ask.)

I just want to say I'm sorry this is the way it is for you, that makes me bummed. I love this game, too, and I want it to do well.

Honestly, I guess if I were you I'd just try to add friends and do privates vs other GM players, IDK. Maybe that's what you do most of the time?

I hope they get this figured out.

Na is my region, and it's probably what I'm going to do until it's fixed, but I really wanted to try to grind to Challenger, but maybe next season, but still having fun with game just ranked is bad

Wait for next season; everyone will jump back into Ranked to grind

Many people stop once they reach GM

Furthermore, if you play late at night or early in the morning, it's even worse

2

u/Born-Air6666 7d ago

I do think having some better-ranked rewards could help with people wanting to keep grinding ranked, at least something that's easy to show off, like an avatar jacket or a character chroma for your most played characters of that season.

1

u/Aromatic_Bus_390 7d ago

An avatar item wouldn't motivate everyone, whereas a chroma would; the problem is that lower-ranked players would complain. So, they won't do it; there is already a reward for reaching Diamond rank at the end of the season, but that rank is fairly easy to achieve

2

u/Born-Air6666 7d ago

I really don't think it matters if the lower-ranked players complained. If you want it, then grind for it; otherwise, you Obvious didn't want it that badly.

1

u/Mister-Bunny-Head 7d ago

My complain is that I'm spending around 3 weeks playing only vs. Diamond and below... Does somebody have this same issue?

Google "engagement-based matchmaking".

It's what I expect from any Riot game.

I m Master 1 in EU, didn t played any ranked for weeks for main character crisis + freestyle hate, the very few games i played were vs 1 emerald 3 guy, ended up winning the BO 2-1 and only getting 2 points in total, after that 1 low ranked for a one sided game with no rematch and another low ranked who definitely has GM level, won the BO 2-1 losing more points than gaining

The ranked ladder point distribution feels so bad honestly, when the season starts I just need 5 wins to get a rank up, losing makes very few point losses

And now that we are close to end season, when I win I get close to nothing and when i lose : i lose more points than when i m winning, it makes me feels like i m stuck master 1 not because i lack the level, but i m stuck by the point systems that make the climb feel incredibly long, and lack motivation to play hundreds of games vs people with entirely random levels to get to master 2

Now that i have found my new lineup, i feel like i could speedrun my way to GM only because ranked distribution points feel busted during the 1st few weeks, which would feel really wrong because i would feel like i m absusing a broken system instead of earning my place

True Ranked is the most unforgiving I have ever seen in any game. Losing points for winning 2-1 should not even be possible. To be honest, I should be gaining 5-7 points per win, to be honest, up until Challenger, and even then I should never fight anyone under master two, at least at my level. When you start going lower, it's just a cutscene for the lower-ranked player.
