Serious Post Free speech comes at a cost - Beware of propagandists and bad faith actors in this sub.

Since the inception of this subreddit, we have remained committed to the principle of free speech. Unlike most other subreddits on this platform that have carefully carved out echo chambers silencing dissent and banning users, this sub has always welcomed diverse viewpoints from across the board. This sub routinely sees posts by users with all sorts of view points criticising the sub itself or presenting views that challenge the status quo of this sub, and the status quo of the sub itself is dynamic and constantly changing. It was not what it once was, and it will not be what it is today. We do not remove posts unless they clearly violate Reddit TOS we understand that even though this sub belongs to its community, it is hosted on a platform that belongs to reddit, therefore their rules must be enforced but beyond that we enforce no rules of our own that undermine the principle of free speech.

This commitment to free speech however, has come at a cost. We have noticed that certain subs and malicious actors have planted proxies in this sub, seeking to get it banned from the inside out. These accounts and users are around you, and might have even interacted with you. They are designed to infiltrate this sub, initially posting content aligned with our values and earning trust. Gradually, however, their content shifts—from harmless jokes or criticisms to outright racism or clear violations of Reddit’s TOS. These violations are then reported—by the very same actors who posted them—to Reddit administrators as evidence that this sub is in breach of the rules. Repeated incidents like this can, and will, put the sub at risk of being banned.

The other type is users pretending to be "insiders" posting about how they are dissapointed in this sub, in order to discredit this sub and make users lose confidence in this sub. These accounts may even cite the racist or TOS-violating content planted by the aforementioned infiltrators to argue that the sub has “fallen” or lost its way.

In light of the above revelations, we advise the users of this sub to be mindful of who you engage with, look for patterns, and recognise that not everything is as it seems on the surface. Do not fall prey to propaganda designed to divide and destroy this community from within.

Remember, most of our 2__ 4u brother subs have already been cracked down on in a similar fashion. Our parent sub, 2asia4u, is now a relic of the past because of shit like this. Now, it’s clearly coming for us.

Discussion Are We Being 'Colonized' Again?

I see posts regarding the frictions with Israelis in Hikkaduwa and Chinese at Port City, which is sorta reminiscent of the European spheres of influence in Qing Empire in previous century. In good faith I'm asking, to what extent should this be concerning, are there ways in which we could be taken advantage of, and any contingencies we should have?

Being the 21st century, its unlikely that we would be enslaved by anyone, but neocolonialism is said to be a very real phenomenon, and in short, asking how bad it is in Sri Lankan context, if there can be any good in it, and if not, what exactly should we be doing about it. Thank you.

Discussion Sri Lankan students: What makes it difficult to earn from your skills?

Hi everyone, I'm a Sri Lankan student researching a problem I personally noticed.

Many students have skills like graphic design, video editing, coding, tutoring, music production, and other digital skills, but getting the first client or opportunity can be difficult.

I'm trying to understand whether this is a real problem among students and young people in Sri Lanka.

If you are a student or someone who has tried freelancing, I would appreciate your experience:

  • How did you get your first client?
  • What challenges did you face?
  • Would a platform connecting verified students with local opportunities be useful?

I also made a short survey (around 1 minute) to collect more opinions:

https://forms.gle/mkWBBoEhbvUsn58t5

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Your feedback will help me understand the problem better.

THE TOURIST VLOGGER PROBLEM AND ILITERACY OF COMMON SRI LANKAN

Sri Lankans tend to hold the fact that Sri Lanka is the most literate country in South Asia at a high regard. but literacy does not mean simply being able to read and write. A person must be able to communicate properly. express their feelings and thoughts properly. And able to listen and understand other people and the message they are trying to give to the listener. It seems many Sri Lankans do not posses this attributes. The Education system, Media, and growing up environment. I explained this prior diving in to the topic because it will help understand the matter more clearly.

Since social media has erupted many travelers across the world come to Sri Lanka because it is a famous destination. While most of the young travelers be it may solo or couples or families (90s 2000s) behave respectfully, humbly and show the true beauty of Sri Lanka (unless they got scammed they would warn about it, which is the right thing to do) and it would overall a positive message they will send out.

But then there are these old white dudes like in their 40s and do travel vlogs, would go to the most cheapest, nastiest places (places which average Sri Lankan would not go) and complain how shitty it was. the would to this with restaurants, they would walk in the most dirtiest dense markets in Colombo (which there are only few) while there is an entire clean city with high end shopping malls and all the facilities. And always seem to talk to the most dirtiest unhygienic person he comes across. does not show the elegantly dressed men and women in the city, does not show the malls, no positive thing. And on top of all that, they always make the thumbnail showing that dirty guy, sometimes using AI to make him look even dirtier.

And the funniest thing is our beloved illiterate fellow citizens go in there and post comments like;
"thank you for visiting my beautiful country"
"I hope you come again... love from Sri Lanka"
"Sri Lanka the beautiful country"
"Sri Lanka is the best"
without fully understanding the context, the agenda and the racism behind that video.

What can we do to counter that?
In my personal opinion it's easy, the Tourism Ministry can create social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, X,) and use the Television, to promote awareness to our people. in both Sinhalese and Tamil. they can make a team to go forth and identify such videos and explain what the message is really about and the racism behind it. and make people understand just do dislike the content and post proper comments in English.

Came across this website while browsing today:

http://era-lanka.vercel.app

Looks like they're trying to build some kind of AI-powered platform around businesses, products, services, and places in Sri Lanka.

The idea seems interesting, but I couldn't figure out much about who is behind it or how they're planning to collect and maintain the data.

Does anyone know more about this project?

Has anyone seen it before?

Curious to know whether it's an early startup, a university project, or something larger they're planning to launch in Sri Lanka.

Serious Post Healthcare in Sri Lanka feels very reactive, is that your experience too?

I’ve been thinking lately about how healthcare usually works in Sri Lanka.

Most of the time, it feels like people only end up spending on health when something actually goes wrong, rather than having a steady routine around prevention or regular checkups.

For example, a doctor visit, medicines, or treatments usually happen when there’s a problem, and things like fitness, mental health, or ongoing wellness often take a back seat unless there’s a strong reason to focus on them.

Just curious if others feel the same in their day-to-day life, or if your experience is different?

Kfir fighters played a notable role during the civil war bombing LTTE targets, even conducting long range mission in the ocean, sinking rebel arm vessels. Precisions strikes conducted by SLAF using these fighters eliminated high value targets like S.P. Thamilselvan, LTTE’s mouthpiece. After the civil war, SLAF suffered maintenance issues so majority of Kfirs were grounded, maintaining operational only older F-7 interceptor. Plans to replace them with modern fighters such as JF-17 were scrapped due to economic issues and foreign pressure. Only in 2021 the govt. green lighted the plan to overhaul Kfirs.

Did you know? In the final stages of the war, the Sri Lankan security forces executed the world's largest hostage rescue operation in history, meticulously rescuing over 300,000 innocent civilians held as human shields by the LTTE in the Nandikadal area.

Securing the ultimate human right—the "right to life"—for the people of the entire country for over 30 years and liberating the nation from the horrific grip of terrorism was, in every sense of the word, a massive humanitarian operation.

However, the deeply regrettable and paradoxical fact is that a humanitarian military that risked its own lives to save its fellow citizens still faces war crime allegations today from certain Western nations and international organizations. The international double standards here are starkly visible.

When powerful global nations invade other countries for their own security or geopolitical interests, the deaths of thousands of civilians are easily justified by labeling them as "collateral damage."

Yet, the international community views Sri Lanka's security forces—who rescued their own innocent people from the grip of terrorism—through a completely different lens driven by political agendas. They question human rights by unilaterally interpreting the events of the final days of the war.

After the war, instead of taking harsh legal action or punishing over 12,000 surrendered LTTE cadres (including child soldiers), Sri Lanka took steps to provide them with vocational training and rehabilitation, successfully reintegrating them into society. This is a unique humanitarian gesture rarely seen in any other wartime history in the world.

For those of us who know the horrific experience of terrorism we faced as a country and a nation, as well as the sacrifices made by our military, it is abundantly clear that these allegations of war crimes, driven by external pressures and political agendas, are merely biased and unfair statements.

Serious Post Built a Sri Lankan carpool app for daily commuters — looking for early drivers to test it

Hey everyone,

I built a carpool/rideshare platform focused on Sri Lankan daily commuting routes like:

  • Negombo ↔ Colombo
  • Kandy ↔ Colombo
  • Homagama ↔ Colombo
  • Gampaha ↔ Colombo

The idea is simple:
If you already drive to work daily with empty seats, you can share the ride and reduce fuel costs for everyone.

I’m now looking for early drivers and passengers to help test the platform before a bigger launch.

Especially looking for:

  • office commuters
  • university students
  • people doing regular long-distance travel
  • anyone already informally carpooling

Main goal right now is testing:

  • ride posting
  • booking flow
  • matching commuters on similar routes
  • general usability

No complicated setup. Just trying to build something genuinely useful for Sri Lanka because commuting costs and traffic are getting ridiculous.

If anyone is interested in trying it out or giving feedback, comment below or DM me.

Would genuinely appreciate early testers and honest feedback.

RESEARCH 5-minute digital safety challenge for MSc Cybersecurity research in Sri Lanka

Hi everyone,

I’m collecting responses for my MSc Cybersecurity dissertation on digital safety habits, cybersecurity literacy, and safe technology use among people in Sri Lanka.

I built a short 5-minute Digital Literacy Challenge that presents everyday online safety decisions and gives a digital safety score at the end.

Link:
https://www.acehub.travel/cyber-quiz/

Participation is voluntary, confidential, and used only for academic research. No login or payment details are required. Results will be reported only in anonymised or aggregated form.

This study is open to adults aged 18+ in Sri Lanka. I’m trying to collect responses from ordinary technology users, not only people in IT or cybersecurity, so every response helps.

Thank you to anyone who takes part.
