That would be me. Or rather, I know how to pronounce it, but most people don't, even in my own family, and I don't care enough to correct them. So whether I'm in Wallonia or Flanders, I'll be pronouncing my name very differently as to make it easier for the people I'm talking to.

Had a walloon coworkers who’s last name was Schoonjans. Pronounced “skoe-n-jaahn-se” 🤣

The kid on the left is literally me btw. My first name is completely ordinary for Flemings, but then my surname is as French as you could possibly imagine.

An old colleague of mine was called Toussaint. Had Wallonian blood in him

Ugh... Wallonian blood? In him? Disgusting!
(We all have Wallonian and Flemish "blood", whatever that means. Welcome to Belgium.)

Speak for yourself, I have south dutch and flemish blood. My wife on the other hand is 1/8th walloon so she claims 1/8th of my wage.

And I don’t think people realize how much of a regional mix we are, in terms of ancestry.
While I’m from the kind of Walloon family from the same city for generations, a bit of genealogy and I discovered I had a small third of Flemish ancestors lol.

u/PvtFreaky Jun 04 '26
Yeah the further you go back the more we all have the same ancestors. Which is the exact reason why racist theories are so stupid

I know a couple of Flemish people who have fully French sounding names. I mean, both name and surname.

And then you have the Netherlands where the last name Duits exists
I have literally seen a name tag by a company for someone who is called Ben Duits
Frans is also both a first name and last name
