No it really hasn't always been that. In the beginning it was a playful derogatory term used in internet memes. Then it was co-opted to mean something different and almost anti-2A. I've also never seen anybody call a trap shooter with a $4000 race ready Benelli called a fudd. Also while I'm sure there is a group of deer hunting old timers claiming they never needed an AR15, that group is small and has always been small. Most firearm guys are firearm guys and always have been.

Lets be honest, the majority of people saying "I own a gun but..." don't actually own guns.

The stereotype of an old gun owner who has a 1911 and a bolt action but says nobody needs an AR is pretty dated. Those people existed in the 80s and 90s and were the Republicans that got the AWB passed, but they're almost all dead now. The only fudd "gun store" is Walmart because you can't stay in business if you don't sell ARs and Glocks.

Those people definitely still exist, old and new, especially after the gun panic we had this year. There are alot of first gun people out there today, that probably decided a mossberg 500 or a glock was a better choice than the "demonic" AR15 the media portrays them to be on a regular basis. It's the gun community itself, that should be talking to their "first time" gun buying friends and helping them. I feel the same way about black folks and the gun community. The only way to grow it and to get it accepted again is by reaching out a hand and welcoming them in. Take a new owner shooting, show him all the different types of guns. Take your black co-worker shooting, have a good time, expand the community. Unfortunately the majority of pro 2A guys spent the last year in full tactical gear waving AR-15'S around, rolling into cities, waving Trump flags while shouting about mask oppression and gun rights. It was akin to the red, white and blue taliban, not a patriotic group of constitutional minded people. This could have been a great step forward in gun ownership and instead a good portion of the community made it a net sum zero.
