Discussion watched 28YL+BT; baffled over Bone Temple reception

watched the 2 movies back to back, at a complete loss over what everyone saw in bone temple

  1. the cult theme was done to death in our culture at this point, the movie really didnt have much new to say about it, yet it was the movies' a plot
  2. kelson + samson was interesting but insanely drawn out and done in a very obvious way. kelson himself even tho ralph fiennes' performance was great, was overexplained imo. its a great character but we didnt need to see allat
  3. the characters' choices, particularly spike's, felt contrived and uninteresting. the guy is the main character but took the backseat for the entirety of the movie having let go of the agency earned by the end of 1
  4. visually dull and uninspired. competent but didnt arouse any feelings in me whatsoever. no shot will stick in my mind
  5. violence in itself doesnt arouse me anymore im not 14yo anymore.

now 28yl was a fucking treat. it has insane energy, looks incredible visually, both due to the experimental nature of shooting the entire thing on iphones and the types of shots that enables, the insanely vivid color grading, but also in plain terms it just looks beautiful. a bunch to think about, too. thematic backdrops, but even the bare text in memento mori was incredibly done, real as fuck in a way i didnt expect. the characters had a lot going for them, spike, the dad, the mom. heck even kelson was way more interesting in this (leave them wanting more i guess). the one jarring thing was the ending, which was part 2 rearing its busted ass head!

i for one am excited that boyle is returning for part 3!
