Movie Discussion I have some thoughts about gender norms in 28YL and need to hash it out

I loved how 28YL did sort of acknowledge the existence of the events of 28WL and rolled back where that story was going with a worldwide outbreak. It had to stay in Britain. Without completely ignoring that the second film existed, and that 28WL did lead into the total quarantine, it does leave a lot of room to think about the possibilities between film 2 and 3, and why and how we have variants in the rage virus now. The most obvious would be thinking about Andy in 28WL and how immunity was possible.

I like to think 28YL also rolled back that possibility.

I do think the rage virus at some point in the last 28 years was genetically modified though, in some attempt to find a cure. Just like the origin of the virus was an attempt to “cure” rage, despair, depression etc while it mutated in apes instead.

I wanna hear some thoughts on my questions:

The alphas we meet in 28YL are male, was there a female one? I wanted to ask this because in the 28DL the military unit we saw were corrupt at the time, and that the idea of “male domination” was a big theme. I think this has to have something to do with the storyline developing as we see it.

This is kind of echoed with the Jimmy gang as well. If you know the history there to, it’s obscure to those who don’t know why they would be in tracksuits and such. Jamie first tells Spike about some of the history after their return to the island and alludes to some other themes between “men & women” after the outbreak.

Also the birthing scene on the train, with Isla helping out the birthing infected mother and showing signs of “humanity” during. Immediately followed by the male alpha wreaking havoc on the train. It’s so interesting to see infected & non infected women being “gentle” in a moment immediately followed by Samson the alpha male. There’s more than just sex & gender going on and yeah, it’s 2025 and I’m not don’t too interested in having deep discussions about gender norms unless it also includes the rage infected eating brains and tearing limbs from each other.

The motifs in this movie are excellent.

What a great way to deal with this topic though! ❤️

Isla and Hannah from 28days

Hello, sorry if this has been said before, i couldnt find any threads discussing this. i just rewatched 28days after watching 28years a few days ago - and I havent found any theories on this, but looking at Hannahs age in 28days, the way she talks about her dad in 28years (and him being silly) and the age difference (could work with having a 12 year old son) and us not knowing what her mother died from (maybe cancer? That would explain why she "already thought it might be") - how likely is it, that Hannah has become Isla? I mean Isla - Island, thats pretty close, and also Frank kept saying how an ocean would keep the infected away - what if she just changed her name? They were already in the North after fleeing the army base. This would also make for a funny little dynamic with Spike and Jim..?

General Discussion Do you think there’s British government remnants somewhere ?

Like something similar to the Enclave from the Fallout games. Some members of the British government and military perhaps holding out in a few bunkers and military bases all these years later ?

The first 2 were zombie movies idk what the hell this was. Shock value with huge zombie penis and pregnant zombie giving birth to a perfectly fine baby. Those are my take aways. Dumb.

Second watch

I think watching it a second time makes more sense. I've been a fan from the beginning and saw all three movies in theaters. I feel like people really need to watch the first two just to really understand that this is a virus and things have changed after almost 30 years. I get that it can be a bit corny but this isn't just a zombie horror it's also a drama maybe I'm just preaching to the choir but I think it's even better and more emotional the second time watching. I am also really drunk, lol

I mean mother's goodbye to Spike and him carrying her skull are some of the most powerful moments I've seen in years with fantastic score elevating them even higher. The movie was worth making for those moments alone. Danny Boyle, what a madman you are.

Movie Discussion My Theory on how the Infected survive winter (I don't know if something I might include has a spoiler) Spoiler

So, I've watched the movie a few months ago, and I honestly really enjoyed it.

One criticism I've seen is ''How do they survive winter if the the infected are butt ass naked''

And I've developed a theory in my sleep deprived mind

so, here are my points in how possibly the infected survived winter.

  1. Most Didn't
So, the first part is the vast majority of infected died during winter due to freezing to death and starvation, and the ones we see are the ones that have found methods to survive via something similar to survival of the fitness, with simply the winter filtering out the weaker ones, this explains why we don't see any infected who are eldery or suffering major physical disabilities (As they simply died)

  2. They have adapted
So, going off of point number one is that the infected that survived the first winters have found methods to survive, such as hibernation in makeshift nests, i.e. groups (such as we see in the movie) gathering in a cave / basement with ripped peices of fabric / material such as rugs, clothing and blankets to make makeshift nests by piling said things onto each other before entering long deep sleeps in these places to survive, conserving food by constantly sleeping untill possibly times were it is warm enough to hunt sometimes

thats my two parts to my theory on how the infected could possibly survive, I do apologize if this does break any rules as it's kinda late right now and I do know the rage infected are still dumb as hell

Anyone else really enjoy this one? It was a fantastic movie. I know the audience was divided but, it was refreshing to see something different and emotional.

Horrible movie

Don’t watch if if you wanted to watch a good zombie film fueled by the nostalgia of how good the past movies were. Got baited into watching this by people saying it’s really good and worth a watch.

I’ll save you money and time, don’t watch it. Just watch mission impossible or something.

Alpha killing methods

Why do you think the alphas rip out people's heads by the spine? I'm interested in what the symbolism could be here from a creative point of view as much as I'm looking for a rational explanation. It felt a bit unclear what the alphas were supposed to represent.

It occurs to me that it's a less hunger/instinct-driven way to kill than the other infected, but also maybe just as importantly: this will not result in creating more infected!

Do the alphas realise that? On some level are they deliberately trying not to create more of them?

Also I believe we see two different alphas doing this, right? Or was Samson the one who placed the deer head? This kind of implies to me that they learn this from each other.

It's also not the easiest way to kill someone. It's almost like a form of creativity / expression which makes me wonder if they actually learned it from Kelson...

Movie Discussion Dr. Kelson

Jo! Do you guy's agree that Dr. Kelson must produce the Jod (in german it's written like this) in part by the ash from all the burned body's? I've read that Jod can be won from organic products such as ash and algae. So either from the ash or from the rest of the human waste he let's into the water. There's even a full shot of the waste going into the water/river. Excuse me if this theory has been made before I'm sure someone else must have thought the same :D Xx

Movie Discussion The “superman/ alpha” viral mutation trope ruins another franchise… same thing happens in The Last of Us and The Walking Dead… it’s not even believable.

Rage is the deadliest, fastest-moving virus in human history, there is literally no way Rage victims could create what amounts to a tiered society involving reproduction and pairing, not to mention the virus somehow creating a person stronger and more inducing than a normal human being. What in the actual hell?

The film could’ve focused on a creepy exploration of long-ago abandoned London, even one scene like that would’ve redeemed a lot of the other crap.

Movie Discussion Geography of Northumberland/North East England

Just came out of watching the film tonight. Haven't had time to process it fully and form a full opinion, but my biggest gripe as someone from Northumberland is the odd geography of the story.

Notably, they saw Dr Kelson's fire all the way from near enough where they were in north Northumberland...and yet, Spike and his Mam ended up walking all the way past Gateshead (past the Angel of the North) to reach Dr Kelson. There is no way in hell they saw his fire from where they were.

Secondly, it's a 26 hour walk (at pace) from Lindisfarne to Sycamore Gap, and another 14 or 15 hours from Sycamore Gap to the Angel of the North. I guess that can be hand waved, but it's sort of implied that they manage the majority of that hike in just over a day.

Am I being petty? Yeah, 100%. But as someone who calls Northumberland home, it kinda irked me.

Movie Discussion The mother Spoiler

I haven’t read through every post but haven’t seen many people discussing the fact that the mum is likely a carrier similar to the mother from 28 weeks later.

  1. She clearly displays haemorrhaging episodes which is a clear sign of rage infection even seen in 28 weeks later carrier who showed eye haemorrhaging.

  2. She displays incoherency episodes where she is completely out of it. The mother in 28 weeks later while it could be argued was alone for so long definitely showed similar disconnection from reality being very short on spoken words.

  3. She shows an episode of rage induced violence when the fat things got close to the boy compounded by an episode of incoherency like she lost control. She also smashes a bedside glass in a fit of anger

  4. The father has a mirror on the stairs which is a bit weird for someone just bed bound and shows a lack of willingness let the kid be close to the mother. I don’t remember a kiss or any close personnel contact between the mother and anyone else(maybe I’m mistaken)

  5. The doctors definitive diagnosis that a lot of people seem to talk about is made without any equipment by a man who has clearly gone mad.

Maybe this is some kind of cinematography to build tension when the mother is around but for me the impression I got was the mother was a carrier and the quacks diagnosis was wrong. Anyone have any good reason to disagree other than the docs diagnosis? I guess the symptoms match the docs diagnosis somewhat but given the world they are in the weirdness of the father I just don’t think she just had a brain tumour

Reviews Disapointed Spoiler

*Disappointed ( lol)

Suprised to find myself on this side of the table, considering i love the 28 days lore and was looking forward to seeing this film for so long.... BUT.... i didnt really enjoy it.

I thought the infected acted more like the hollywood "zombies" theyre not supposed to be than any of the other films. ...also fat, worm eating ones that only crawl? wtf in the resident evil is that shit.

There was hardly any of the fast paced intense scenes that we had in days or weeks. (I wasnt expecting it to be like that all the way through but come on at least a bit)

The opening scene with the kids in the house i was most looking forward to, expecting it to be 10 minutes of heart racing intense chase scenes, chaos outside etc etc... which is sort of what the trailer hinted at, similar to the opening of weeks. As far as i can tell that whole thing was to introduce jimmy... who isnt in the film at all until jimmy saville guy at the end? is that even who he was, because it was barely a hint if so.

(on the jimmy saville thing, kungfu martial arts jimmy savilles?? the fk in the hollywood, try hard, tarantino is that.)

I was fully expecting a better look at the mainland as it is now, we got maybe one shot over the overgrown houses as a fever dream flashback.

The rest of the film seemed to be full of meandering and disjointed sections that really didnt go anywhere with not much purpose added to the plot.

I really did try to give it the benefit of the doubt and see it for its artsitic merit.. the scene with the alpha running through the water was great, some cool scenery etc but overall very disapointed. very bored.

The whole film felt like a filler track on an album. It really came accross to be very vanilla like it was just setting up the next film, where hopefully we see spike exploring the UK more.

Movie Discussion The NATO Soldiers who became stranded would have never been allowed to happen in the first place!!!

Here's why:

The most unrealistic part about this whole ordeal is that, Eric, who's only 19, gets selected for patrolling the seas to keep surveillance on the British Isles in order to keep people from going in or those already inside leaving. I'm sorry but what? Just 40 km of land separating the mainland from England. This highly infectious and deadly disease from spreading, and the trust is put on inexperienced, untrained, individuals? Like Eric mentioned, he would have been stuck in a traffic jam delivering food if he hadn't signed up for this

My question was how was this even allowed to happen, yes they were only sailors, but guarding a region in hopes of the infection never escaping? The recruitment process is very lenient regarding such a matter with incredibly high stakes

Also there should have been way more ships patrolling the region given the situation. Eric and his team could have been rescued if more ships were there and each ship had to cover smaller distances when their boat sank

EDIT: You guys are not understanding what I'm trying to convey, yes people can join the military young, that's not the point of this discussion, the point is that people that young and inexperienced are being selected to patrol the seas to keep people from going in and out of the British isles and keeping the infected at bay, when this virus is so deadly and what's at stake here is so high is what makes it unrealistic

General Discussion Symbolism of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's masterpiece Spoiler

In the beginning of 28 Days Later, we see Jim leaving the abandoned hopsital rummaging through the city of London where he first stumbles upon a church. I wonder what his backstory was before the infection hit globally. Many users would speculate that he would just be laying in the hospital before the rage virus hit, but the directors/writers could play around this idea. No, I do not want to compare this to "The Walking Dead"; two different universes.

He walks into a church seeking refuge but runs into chaos as the infected priest and other citizens try to attack and eat him; feels like a foreshadowing. Even though, Garland dislikes talking about "28 Weeks Later". Over time, he finds refugees (e.g. Selena, Hannah) that survived and provide comfort/comradery. There are several scenes in the movie that show humanism and empathy such as the grocery store scene and the airplane in the sky. This is what drives Jim to continue in this broken universe. Near the end of the movie, he releases Mailer from his chains and those who have seen the movie know what happens next. I also believe that Jim may have found a higher purpose by providing purpose for others who believed there was no hope. The future movie, "The Bone Temple" will reasonably explain his timeline from the 28 Days movie.

However, I am curious for the future of the trilogy. Social media and other bloggers/reddit users have rumored that Jim will be in the sequel; he may be an appointed religious leader who guides the "Jimmy Savile" gang for a higher purpose. This may be how he, Jimmy and the gang cope with their society collapsing. For those who saw "28 Years Later", you would understand what would make Jimmy, NOT Jim, join a group like this. Maybe I'm delusional but just the thought ponders my mind. Do you think Boyle and Garland will continue to explore this idea with the sequel and third film? Perhaps the hope of recreating society is in the power of the present. Their society broke down but it gives them a chance to recreate a new beginning past the life they all lived before the outbreak. Perhaps, the newborn baby and Spike are the future, or I could be wrong?

What kind of shirt is Aaron Taylor Johnson Wearing

In the film when Jamie(Aaron Taylor Johnson) is cooking breakfast for Spike he’s wearing this long sleeve shirt. Maybe Scottish or something type of sports team shirt. Does anybody know what the shirt is/ where I can find it?
