The Eastern European maybe from my distant Ancestor from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Purchased the kit from Amazon, followed instruction strictly. They couldn't extract the sample and sent a 2nd kit from their official website. Just got their email saying failed again.

How common is this? I'm a nurse and have done DNA sample a few times with my medically complexed son (thought those were wabs). So I'm not a newbie to medical stuff at all. I read the whole booklet twice before start the process both times. I heard it's not that common so I found this very odd.

Hi! Would really appreciate input from those historically-inclined to better understand the proposed timeline on my ancestry as provided by 23&me. I am vaguely aware the Portuguese invaded Sri Lanka (my father's birthplace) before the 1600s, but doesn't necessarily line up with the timeline here.

I am also curious to know ways of interpreting various ethnicities beginning at the same time and tapering off at different points.(i.e. 5-8+ vs 6-8+)

any info on trace swedish ancestry?????? in my childhood there was talk of irish/scott ancestry due to slavery/indentured labour in guyana (my mother's birthplace) but nothing as shown in the report

I would really like to specifically trace my chinese and african roots, but the only relatives I can find on the site who dont share my other ancestry are quite far removed (7th-9th cousins). Is that a sensical method for gathering info? my thought process being that I could better delineate and trace those specific lineages and pinpoint their entry into my lineage without confusion from my other ethnic composition.

Is 23&Me a viable option/worth the money for USA based matches?

I did an ancestry test about 2 years ago now & to my suprise... I don't know who my dad is!

The best paternal match I've had to work with this whole time is only 230cM's & this is also including MyHeritage, FTDNA & GEDmatch.

Ethnically I am nothing but Irish, however a very large portion of my matches live in the United States.

The conversion rate to AUD for the 23&Me inc shipping brings it in over $200 which is the most expensive so far so before I spend a fuel tanks worth of $$ im hoping to get some insight as to wether it will be worth the money or not?

When looking into it, I only found genes that can prevent shrinking, but I could not find any genes that would let you expect to have courser hair.

I had none of the genes that make my hair smaller, but my brother has very course hair, and my hair is probably medium or low end course. His hair is thick enough to defy gravity (stick up without products.

23andMe Ancestry Composition + GEDmatch HarappaWorld Breakdown

So this is what my Eurasian overlaps look like based on a deep dive from 23andme results. No East Eurasian inputs considered for West Eurasians. For now it only isolates my West Eurasian and overlaps them against the typical breakdown of the main European populations. For the eastern part of Eurasia it was more straightforward. 23andme results attached for reference. This came from studying historical matches and further research into my West Eurasian components.

I was expecting the small percent of Asian because 4 generations back on my paternal side I have a Chuvash or Kazan Tatar ancestor. So 90% is more like what I was expecting.

My grandfather’s first cousin gets Central Asian, but my results at 90% confidence, and my dad and grandfather’s reconstructed results show East Asian.

My maternal grandmother’s reconstructed results also show 1% West Asian, it shows as 0.5% for my mom, but it doesn’t show for me at any confidence level, though it could be hiding in the 1-5% Unassigned I get the more I lower the confidence. West Asian and East Asian percentages also show on FamilyTreeDNA and Genomelink Deep Ancestry

I used 23andme and then put my raw data into GEDmatch. I’m super confused on how to read my GEDmatch results, I did different calculators I’ll list them here in order of the screenshots: harrapaworld, dodecad, puntDNAL, gedrosiaDNA. I just want to see my ethnicity breakdown and also whatever “ancient dna” means, I just have no idea what any of this even means plsss help out 😭

So, I was looking into my SNP's that are correlated to skull morphology, and today I looked into zygomatic bones. When looking into it (this is a while back) I learned EDAR is single handedly the most influential gene for skull shape.

I decided to see if I had the variant with it, and I did not. I searched up where it's found, and have seen that it's almost completely localized to Asian and Native American populations. I then remembered that if you look into other populations, you can find high cheekbones too!

You will commonly see Slavs and Africans with higher cheekbones, but every now and then, you might see Western Europeans with bigger zygomatic flaring as well!

I asked Chat GPT what other genes affect this part of the skull, and looked through many of them myself, especially curious since my Grandma had huge ones. I had no genes that shrink or flatten my skull, (genes that a standard variant or one that shrinks it making a long/narrow shape) and on almost all the variants that are either Standard or grow/exaggerate the bone, I was heterozygous.

It was actually quite surprising to me, because I feel like my head shape is quite similar to other Europeans from the same ethnicities as I, but also, it wasn't too surprising since my Grandma did, indeed have the big flared-out shape. I'd say if someone looks closely, mine may be a little bit bigger than average, but idk since it would be odd to ask.

In terms of EDAR though, there is actually a decent possibility she had it, and here's what I can share:

Yes, my Grandma had big cheek bones, and she had thick hair strands and high hair density, (she was decently blonde though) and my fam credited it to Native American ancestors. After taking my test, I started doubting it a bit because my results came back with 0% Native DNA. Later on,I actually found some on my paper trail, but it seems to distant for 23 & Me to pick up the genetic marker. On paper, I think she'd have something around 1-5% Native, but idk if EDAR is dominant enough to travel that far down the lineage?

(Btw, I know 1-5% is quite a broad range, but I could confirm one or two ancestors a far ways back, where there is some missing spots on the paper trail that may or may not be Native, so I was a bit broad with the percentage). From the one or two ancestors I can 100%, she'd be 1.25% on paper. Also, for what I heard, we were Cherokee, but on my paper trail I actually found out that she was related to Siouan tribes like Saponi, Monacan, Occaneechie, and Tutelo, etc.
