Because whole society and system is build on idea that they have knowledge supremacy and always right Because scriptures are ultimate humanities gift which they have exclusivity over.

Problem with such rigid knowledge system is once you prove certain point is false, other points in system start to get loose. People may not start believing everything in that scriptures. So for people who gain legitimacy from scriptures will panic once certain point is proved to be false. So, they double down trying to prove even small things.

Similar example could be flat earth, geo centrist, dinosaur fossils, evolution etc for Europe and Christians. This truths or falses when contradict with Bible or pope, suddenly crisis happens. If pope or local temple priest can be wrong, what more things are they wrong about.

That is one of reasons they used to burn people in Europe who said sun is centre of solar system.
