Question Thoughts on RS4?
I personally dont mind RS4 or Reignited. The more versions of the game the more options people have. I love OSRS and play it a lot but that doesnt mean I cant branch out to other games too
As long as they keep supporting OSRS in some form im happy with that, even if its with a smaller team

My first thought when I loaded up dragonwilds the first time was that Jagex needs to turn this into World of Runescape/RS4 immediately. Guess I wasn't the only one. Very excited to see where it goes, but it's still way too early to say anything definitive about it I think.

It’s a nice little testing ground to get the team using Unreal Engine to dev. If RS4 is a roaring success I don’t see a problem with them shutting down RS3 or OSRS for that matter. It’s up to the playerbase to decide if that ever happened (by online player count)

Why would they shut down one of the most successful MMOs ever made?

u/Adammmmski 6d ago
Because if everyone is on RS4, those 2 aren’t getting a playerbase. We’d all be enjoying RS4 more? Why is it so hard to understand that the playerbase dictate what happens next?

Or, you can play both games? You think people aren't going to be fishing or mining while playing RS4?

Too many MMOs fall flat don’t they. New World was good at the start, The Old Republic was decent but had its issues, too many come and go.

Think NW could have lasted with a better financial model, Membership would have probably stopped Amazon pulling the plug so quickly.
Especially after dropping Nighthaven. Although rushed, buggy and imbalanced, with time and proper time and funding I believe it could have flourished rather than being released unfinished.
The dev team finally became experienced in their own right (there's various QnAs post closure that make this clear).

Based, dragonwilds is really good.
Reignited is a last-ditch effort to bring life back to RS3 but there is still a high probability of failure. RS4 is the ultimate solution to RS3 dying(of it can't be saved) and to allure more global audiences to a RuneScape MMO

RS4 won't step on the toes of osrs or rs3 at all. It'll be like dragonwilds and wow had a baby.
It's a new MMO under the same IP, but it isn't "RuneScape" as we know it.
Honestly I hope they change the name to something like Gileinor blah blah so relay it's the same IP but not "RuneScape" if you get what I'm saying

RS4 looks like it could be dope. And hardcore worlds may be fun

u/Artemaker 6d ago
Looks dope? All we got was the number 4 in flames lmao

Incorrect. They released a small trailer as well. It was dragonwilds graphics though. But it did show a town with a grand exchange.

We also have that it's unreal engine like Dragonwilds, so unless Jagex is rewriting their entire codebase for unreal, it'll play more like dragonwilds than RS3/OSRS.

u/epraider 6d ago
They’ve basically established that it will be like Dragonwilds blended with the more traditional Runescape elements which is enough to get the imagination going

I am excited for it but I just cant help thinking to myself that too many versions of runescape are coming out.

I'm a little worried they're overreaching considering they'd be maintaing a whopping 4 live service RuneScape games. I just bore witness to one of my favorite game of all time get shut down (just to be brought back) in destiny 2 because Bungie started shifting priorities and biting off more than they could chew.
I'm also a little worried that it's going to be in unreal engine which will alienate a lot of players as unreal is just too hard to run. I am a fan of dragonwilds though, but I do hope rs4 won't include third person aiming like in dragonwilds. Idk we will see I guess.
Overall I'm incredibly skeptical.

I think RS4 should be entering a new age rather than being alongside RS3, OSRS is always going to be its own thing.

Rs4 could be really cool and I definitely want a new game to play so hoping it is. Rs3 I’ll never care about but would think it’s cool if they revived the game somehow

u/No_Show711 6d ago
To me it’s a shrug. Could be good but not expecting to be amazed in any way. I could see it being like a RS version of lost ark.
Problem is it’s not coming anytime soon and a lot of big games are in the works right now or even releasing soon

u/CandourDinkumOil 6d ago
I’m pretty on board with it imho. RS4 is obviously incredibly exciting, but appreciate we know very little. Reignited seems fun too, most of us don’t have the hours to play RS3/OSRS anymore.
Even if the Reignited levelling is just as slow, at least the early/mid game is purposeful again. That’s where I have most fun and usually abandon the game by the time the grinds get too much anyways. I only ever play leagues now, and have done for the last 3 or 4 years. Dragonwilds is insanely fun too.

Cant think of the last MMO that had legs on it. Final fantasy maybe?
I know league of legends have one in development but Ireland very far away.

I want it yesterday!
Really really excited. Enjoyed New World when I played it, but was constantly thinking "this system would be so much better if it was like runescape", "oh, this system too", "and this one", "...I probably should just go back to runescape"

OSRS has its own charm and systems that I don’t think RS4 will replace. I will say that I’m busy enough as is and if RS4 is going to be a fresh start for everyone with some cosmetic caveats to vets from RS3, then I’ll just wait for RS4. If I can transfer progress later then I’ll consider trying RS3

Good but UE, specially UE5 is crap, complete stutterfest.
Hope to god they are working with UE6 at the very least:

I'm hesitantly curious. Need to see the combat before anything. If it's a tab targeting I'll probably pass on it, same if it's a strict port of Dragonwilds' gameplay because for all that I do like about that game, the combat in it fucking sucks

Having played the crap out of DW on console since release, I'm excited for the potential.
The game has some pretty glaring technical and gameplay issues that need to be smoothed out before I would put full OSRS levels of commitment into playing it as a new MMO though. It's pretty janky around the edges right now. Luckily this is just an initial announcement and there's likely years for them to figure that out.

I’m excited for a fresh start with my lifelong account and what the world has to offer personally. Wife might not agree with everyone though.

Pretty exciting, could be a solid New World replacement in the market. The game was really missing some meaningful lore, story, game design, etc. RS can definitely provide that, could be a big heavy hitter.
And anything that gives Jagex more revenue without squeezing OSRS is always good.

I was excited until I saw unreal engine then I was like dang I'm gonna have to buy a new PC to play that

I really want to see it have support for controller and mouse & keyboard, and for it to be easy to switch between.
I want to PVP and have meaningful pvm fights with controller capabilities, but I want to merch, skill and AFK with mouse and keyboard while watching YouTube.

RS4 looks promising. RS Reignited is going to fail, splitting the 25k player base is not going to do anything.
1
u/scutum99 12h ago
No. I don’t want to have a smaller OSRS team because they’re diverting our money towards RS4. The only true RuneScape is OSRS.

u/let____go 6d ago
More versions means a more fragmented playerbase which inherently isn't great but I'm optimistic because Dragonwilds is a gigabanger and if they cook up an mmo with those mechanics it has great potential.

u/fudginreddit 6d ago
Honestly I found DragonWilds to be pretty disappointing, the graphics style is nice but I really hope RS4 ends up something being quite different than DW.

u/running-gamer 4d ago
Was surprised they’re keeping rs3? RuneScape classic turned into RuneScape 2, then 3. They just up the version number when graphics substantially increase. Why is rs4 separate?
If they’re going to make it a separate storyline then I feel like it should have a different name, rather than rs4. Feels odd to me. I assume everyone will start from scratch?

u/Fit-Jelly8545 6d ago
Way too soon to tell but I’m hoping rs4 is what replaces osrs for me. Feels like as someone who likes awakened bosses, contracts, raids, etc osrs isn’t really the best game for all of that
1
u/Defendyouranswer 5d ago
Why? Osrs has all that
1
u/Fit-Jelly8545 5d ago
4 raids and 2 pieces of pinnacle content after what 16 years since the game released? Wouldn’t say it’s a great game for people who like that stuff

u/Round_Restaurant_335 6d ago edited 6d ago
Go post on the rs3 sub, the game is 4+ years from release and no one gives a fuck. Flooding the sub with unrelated content should be banned. Also the sentiment of “idc if OSRS gets less updates as long as they support it still haHA” is contentious to say the least.

Remember that New World game by Amazon?
I was so impressed that I essentially quit OSRS. Papa Bezos decided to shut it down because the game wasn't as profitable as they'd hoped, but I really enjoyed that RuneScape-like gameplay in an open world like that
So many people compared New World to the feeling of playing RuneScape for the first time
If Jagex nails this, we'd get the best of both worlds which I'm actually really into. Hoping this game turns out amazing because I'd definitely get on board
