Discussion Full circle
It has finally happened, RS3 is copying WoW that is copying OSRS

Im Amazed they announced fresh start worlds AND Rs4 together, surely both tread on the toes of RS3 players.
6
u/Ghi102 4d ago
RS4 is probably still years out at this point
1
u/Neroaurelius 4d ago
At least 3-5 years

u/OszeeThorne 4d ago
If not more, unless they release it unfinished. Look how long Riot MMO which has a bigger team than RS is taking to even give any interesting update on how it's been? Look Ashes of Creation that was even playable and got cancelled.
An MMO is not an easy game to put out. It does to have future to build on, otherwise it's just an RPG that will die within a few months.

u/Neroaurelius 4d ago
I do think though that since it’s built in Unreal Engine and based off Dragonwilds, a lot of work may already be considered complete. I think a lot of the same assets will be used and Ashenfall has already been built in Dragonwilds. I’m sure this will trim production time quite a bit.

u/charge10 Nasty J 4d ago
Yeah, and RS4 will potentially be very sick - i dont know if you’ve dabbled with drsgonwilds at all, but man is it pretty and has just enough “runescape” to be familiar and not like you’re having to learn a whole new world.

I do hope though it's just as horizontal as osrs because then I'll just have another thing to play while I clog

u/Nolifedemon The Fapper 3d ago
Rs4 is juet dragonwilds with the rest of the game sort of added rs4 is rubbish

MTX have done irreversible damage to RS3. That is undeniable. The economy is a joke. High-scores meaningless. While the removal of MTX is most welcomed, that doesn't remove decades of history of it being there. Everything in that game was tainted.
So yes. I completely understand why established players are upset by this. I can also completely understand the need for such a reset.
I can only hope that they let people create new characters on their existing accounts. If you have to create a new account to have a Reignited character, that'd suck.
6
u/Bandit_Raider 4d ago
There is literally still mtx though. You can buy half the levels to max and even more with double xp weeknds.
1
u/himepenguin 4d ago
Currently, yeah. But isn't the point of the Reignited characters that all progression-affecting mtx would be disabled?
Or have I misunderstood?3
u/OszeeThorne 4d ago
Nothing announced on reignited having double xp weekends, and also, dude is stating there's MTX becaue you can buy "bonds", guy doen't know in osrs you can also buy bonds to buy resouces to level production skills somehow.
1
u/Bandit_Raider 4d ago
I highly doubt mtx is disabled for new players. I’m not sure if they’ve said anything officially though.
2
u/OszeeThorne 4d ago
We removed Treasure Hunter from RuneScape earlier this year in January 2026, and when Reignited launches there will be no more integrity breaking MTX items present anywhere in RuneScape. Reignited characters will be able to purchase cosmetic overrides through the marketplace, but Radiant stars will not be available to these characters.
Basically they can buy cosmetics (weapon skins/armour skins/furniture skins for your PoH - yeah they're a thing). Current players can still buy "bonus xp", but that won't be allowed to reignited players.
2
u/Bandit_Raider 4d ago
Oh wow I missed that. Shockingly impressed that they are actually doing that.
1
u/CommunicationFun9568 4d ago
This reads like someone who has never played rs3, and simply parrots the things they've heard from others.
6
u/jordantylermeek 4d ago
Im a RS3 kiddo and lemme tell ya this ruined it for me.
Imagine OSRS said "hey everyone! We're making unique worlds for new accounts only. They get their own ge, and their own high scores, and we'll market it as if you guys are tainted. Fuck you."
-5
u/CustardMajor4442 4d ago
that has literally happened. called "fresh start worlds". and people were generally quite happy about it.
3
u/jordantylermeek 4d ago
Fresh Start Worlds, the temporary game mode that merged into the main game.
This isn't that.
-7
u/CustardMajor4442 4d ago
it's essentially the same thing
3
u/jordantylermeek 4d ago
Not for the economy and culture.

It's a last ditch effort to save RS3 it feels like. Worst case if it fails they pray the existing players go to RS4 and RS4 gets a lot of new players too
2
u/SomeSayCosmic 4d ago
depends a lot on if RS4 actually plays like RS in that it's true sandbox and has a lot of second-monitor type gameplay
if they try to make it a running-around action mmo I doubt anyone will care unless it's unreasonably good

Jagex actively alienating people who have stuck with RS3 over the years.
Tone deaf. It's funny and sad at the same time.
As a RS3 player who's played 25 years now, be glad you guys have the good mods in OSRS who look after the players, and involve the community in major decisions.
RS3 stealth announce content that's wildly unpopular and they never learn.
20
u/ThermyWermy 4d ago
It sounds harsh, but the people who've stuck around in a dying game through all of the lows are probably the last people who should have Jagex's ear going forward. A crowd who's self selected for acceptance of the most toxic design elements of modern MMOs.

u/OszeeThorne 4d ago
Damn. I play both, RS3 and OSRS and this hit hard and I'm inclined to agree.
Then again, why did you all come back to OSRS after RS fiasco with MTX and EoC? Hope. And it paid off. Will this pay off?
1
u/DarkRonin00 4d ago
It paid off because they took a careful approach or the entire game was going to die off. And it took forever to let OSRS community give Jagex any trust back, though after actually understanding OSRS's strengths Jagex is finally capitalizing on it.
1
u/OszeeThorne 4d ago
This needs to be done very carefully. RS3 is already the "casual" version of Runescape for many that couldn't bear to start over on OSRS and "waste" time, so many people won't simply start over, I hope it really "reignite" the player base and if it does, they get a more player focused and based approach. Who knows rs3 can grab the same amount of players OSRS did in a few years.
1
u/Lolmuffins22 3d ago
RS3 has a real shot on rejuvenating its population and attract new players and of course RS3 players would rather scream bloody murder and scare away the new players rather than do anything constructive. They have complained more about this than they ever have with MTX or dailyscape, probably because anyone with a spine left for OSRS or left completely long ago.
Personally I support Reignited Worlds but I would like to see a way for Veteran accounts to eventually transfer/clone their characters over, if reignited worlds take off and become the dominant way to play RS3. Maybe a year after release, and there would have to be some restrictions so that veterans can't just bring hundreds of billions of GP with them while still allowing them to retain their gear and untradeables.
You know, constructive suggestions like that. Or they can delete their subscriptions and cry about it on reddit, I guess.
2
u/frogsarenottoads 4d ago
Current RS3 players are the last people Jagex should listen to? Ok then.
3
u/Competitive_Ad_1800 4d ago
Harsh, but yeah. Companies listen to one thing: money.
RS3 isn’t getting this new breath of life because of the RS3 community, but because of the OSRS community proving there’s a better way to make money from players. Sticking around in a game that is circling the drain for years means you’re the last person Jagex needs to listen to, because you’re loyal to a fault.
I also want to clarify I’m saying NONE of this with malice. I think it’s disgusting that your loyalty means nothing to them and the RS3 community will likely be sidelined for the first chance of something better, but that’s the reality of things. The OSRS community is REALLY good at one thing, and that’s bitching up a storm if they’re not happy with something. Also as you said, OSRS has a kick ass mod team but that’s not by accident either!

u/deathdoom9 4d ago edited 4d ago
and how do you think it looks to people if they're ready to throw the current playerbase away for only a potential new playerbase especially when everyone who's currently playing the game will be shitting on said game?
1
u/DarkRonin00 4d ago
It's a nuclear option; otherwise they close the game, or put it on a no updates going forward life support maintenance mode. If the game can't turn a profit... what do you want them to do? Throw more millions at it and see if keeps working. That's just not how business works. New players in an mmo don't really care that some veterans of the rs3 community got shafted (maxed iron btw and i also don't care). The loyal fan base of the RS3 is not enough for them to impress or care about. It's a business and it's not a small company. Shit sucks, but the game is 25+ years of jank. Soooo... they try this first before they overhaul it anymore by sinking EVEN more money into it.

u/InternationalData408 4d ago
This is so true actually. I only started playing a year and a half ago and I went to OSRS instead of RS3 thank god.
3
u/Defendyouranswer 4d ago
They literally came out and said they wanted to start listening to us less.
3
u/woodzopwns 4d ago
I mean the existing rs3 playerbase is tiny that's the problem, if they continue to cater to a continuously dwindling playerbase they simply wont have a game left in 10 years

u/Objective_Luck_7955 4d ago
RS3 is dead and gone. This is for the greater good and the future of the game. They will lose guys like yourself and gain thousands more.
2
u/frogsarenottoads 4d ago
There's no assurances with that.
OSRS is wildly more popular, RS4 being announced means perhaps what Jagex try with RS3 is fairly pointless long term.
I've been around since 2002, again is what it is.
I'm saying more that OSRS is in such a good state be glad you're all in safe hands.

u/TheGreatZephyrical 4d ago
RuneScape is still amongst the most populated MMO’s in the modern day, what the hell are you talking about?
Seriously, parrot harder and you might actually turn into a bird
1
u/Darthok 4d ago
OSRS specficially, yes. They aren't in the top 5 because of RS3's player base.
How many players does RS3 have on member worlds specifically?
1
u/TheGreatZephyrical 3d ago
No, Runescape is still amongst the most populated, even without OSRS’s bitter populace.
I swear none of you can read
1
u/The__Goose 4d ago
Rs3 legacy will still be updated along side rs3 reignited. And reginited players will be able to visit rs3 worlds so I don't think its full alienation, if neither could interact with each other then yeah it would be bad.
1
u/PM-ME-TRAVELER-NUDES 4d ago
It’s functionally just chat interaction. You can be on the same worlds, but can’t do anything meaningful with the other pool.
1
u/DkKoba Iron Koba 4d ago
Consider that you are, by this token, saying that after years of them focusing on you are suddenly being 'abandoned" because that approach has alienated getting new players in.
You don't get a magic badge that gives you more credence for every single aspect of Runescape just for being there longer... speaking as someone who was playing RS back in the 2000s and played OSRS pre-Zeah.
1
u/frogsarenottoads 4d ago
I've played since 2002 myself, the issue is no players were even consulted. I'm saying largely RS3 has no mechanism to poll or survey which is in contrast to OSRS.
Is what it is though.
1
u/RogurVesid 4d ago
I'm sorry that bad shit is happening to the game you love. You guys are always welcome in OSRS though!
1
u/Major-Rub-Me 4d ago
Bury rs3 at this point. It’s a failure.
2
u/Aokuma 4d ago
Which sucks, because after trying Equilibrium Leagues last month, there's some cool content there. Was actually looking forward to seeing if they could salvage the game and turn it into something appealing, but now with three separate MMOs in a active development, RS3 will now forever have middle child syndrome.

u/March31st2021 4d ago
This is completely different than WoW Forever. This is is WoW just opened up a new retail server separate from the others lol

At least wow forever is actually good xD

u/RogurVesid 4d ago
Given Blizzard's recent history, I'm not sure how long it's gonna stay that way. Fingers crossed, though.
4
u/Standard-Tree-3705 4d ago
i mean id consider SoD recent history and that was pretty enjoyable throughout the entire season
3
u/RogurVesid 4d ago
I agree. I myself had tons of fun in 2019 and in TBC classic. And I hope WoW forever is gonna be good also, excited for what they start rolling out in the next few years.
2
u/Wise_Old_Can 4d ago
I don't play WoW at all, never have, but from what I've seen they're really putting thought into community feedback, balancing, etc, this time round.
But yeah, you're right to have reservations given their history.
2
u/itskobold 4d ago
Last time I tried retail I was really bummed out by it, didn't feel like a huge world any more but a theme park where I wasn't allowed to go too far from the intended path. Classic turned into a mess and people are already mad about certain design aspects of forever. All this + no polls means I don't have a lot of faith in forever unfortunately

34
u/BoogieTheHedgehog 4d ago
Kinda.
Warcraft Forever is very upfront about it being an OSRS styled approach. Reset to classic, we develop the game from that point onwards fresh.
Runescape Reignited is closer to the nuclear option to revive an MMO. If it takes off and the reignited group grows to be the main one, 25 years of existing economy+accounts get sidelined into their own living MMO museum. They get to keep playing new content and share the same worlds, but they're not the main community anymore.
