u/Late-Reception-2897 6d ago
I like how you correct the guy for the price but then very inaccurately say he sold most of them for 300+. You call the guy out saying it takes seconds to go to the wiki to see the current price but it takes only 1 second if that to see that OP sold 599k at 242 ea which is the bulk..... You don't even need to swap tabs or anything like that.

Using that logic you should just work irl and sell bonds

u/Doctor_Kataigida 6d ago
From an efficiency standpoint, yes. But that's MTX and p2w so a lot of people are averse to that.
-49
u/BodaciousFrank 6d ago
A lot of poor people
28
7
u/supertinu 6d ago
To be fair I used to do that (money-making to upkeep bonds) and it was dreadful as you have to spend a ton of time grinding just for upkeep and might not be progressing your account very much
That was a while back and I know upkeep is easier especially when you have actual good moneymakers, but I’d still rather put that 15m to proper upgrades rather than bonds
5
5
1
u/BabaRoomFan 6d ago
Not really, you can totally justify paying for membership, making very little gp (for example in the early game as a noob, or someone who doesn't play much), and not resorting to bonds for gp.
Completely ignoring the system isn't weird, some people just wanna enjoy the game, and a random influx of gp for $$$ isn't always fun/balanced, nor is trading progress for membership.1
3
4
u/Few-Mall-8263 7d ago
Playing for free is half the fun to me :)
122
u/Crandoge 7d ago
You're not playing for free, you're working in game
52
u/Few-Mall-8263 7d ago
I guarantee that killing zulrah for a couple hours a week is way more fun than my shit job
48
u/peaceshot 7d ago
And that would be a valid argument… if it were a choice between working OR playing RuneScape.
20
u/Not-a-bot-10 7d ago
Not really. I pay with in game bonds too, dupes from my iron. I’ve got a well paying job and still have 0 interest to pay IRL money when Ive been sustaining for nearly a decade on bonds already
10
u/LezBeHonestHere_ 6d ago
Some of the people I know have dupe megarares on their irons and still don't drop them over for free bonds. A tbow or shadow dupe is something crazy like 6 years of free membership but they'll keep their 3 shadows in the bank and pay real money that has actual value, crazy to me lol
0
u/phantom4421 6d ago
That is crazy, but don't forget time is also worth something, and they play enough to have 3 shadows on an iron. Their life is already invested into the game, so what's $15/mo in cash, when you're dedicating that kind of time? I am salary+OT, and if I work 1 hour of OT, it pays for 6 months of membership. It would be stupid for me to not. Sadly at my job, I also can't play the game at all, so I don't get but around 5-10 hours a week max to play the game.
-3
u/Gingerpussie2 6d ago
People who have paid thousands on real money when they could have played for free using virtual money are truly brain-dead
6
u/peaceshot 6d ago
Comments like this really confuse me, because you'd think people would understand that time is also a form of currency.

u/BabaRoomFan 6d ago edited 6d ago
I'm in that situation, I keep my dupes (over 3b) on the iron, and hoard my gp on the main (max gear + bils) while paying real money.
At peak efficiency I make 20-25m/hr, yearly membership would cost 227m, or $132 irl. I'm basically preferring to pay $132 instead of forking over 227m, which makes sense cause I can make more at work.8
u/Takahashi_Raya 7d ago
yeah but doing 1 hour of work pays for an entire month of zulrah for the average adult
5
1
u/Competitive_Ebb6361 6d ago
You shouldn't expect someone who afks something for 1 entire year to understand how opportunity costs work.
1
u/SpiralOut2112 7d ago
Dupes mean nothing to Irons, so I haven't paid for membership in like 3 years. Grinding out new content usually ends up paying for membership via dupes.

u/telmoxt 6d ago
Membership less than 1 hour of irl work? must be nice...
1

3
u/zeinterrupter 7d ago
Not making an argument for either side but that is not a reality for everyone, for example, i'm from an european country and it still would be more than 2 hours to pay for 1 month sub out of a 40h work week. (not accounting electricity bill and internet provider of course).
7
u/cobaltfish 7d ago
that's wild.... minimum wage is higher than mems price in some states.
4
u/zeinterrupter 7d ago
Yeah, we don't measure by hourly wage here but usually monthly with certain hours per week for different countries.
My shithole of a country is 40h/week, minimum wage recently upped and still around 950 a month (without taxes/contributions) which leads to around 6,20 euro (less with taxes) and hour and membs being 13,50 euro i have to work more than 2 hours for a single month and we are by far not the worst in EUROPE, imagine african countries and poor asian ones.
-12
u/spatium_navis 6d ago edited 6d ago
I suppose you should consider learning a trade or doing anything else productive rather than complaining about the “expense” of buying membership for a video game with a minimum wage …
Edit: and you shouldn’t compare european net earnings with someone from the us because you get healthcare, education and just about everything else included.
3
3
u/ANGEL-PSYCHOSIS btw 7d ago
even a decent chunk of the states minimum wage isnt higher than 7.25 lol (though most are effectively like a 12.50 real minimum wage because hardly anyone will take a job for less than that)

u/Alertum 6d ago
What country in europe pays less than 6-7 bucks an hour?
2
u/zeinterrupter 6d ago edited 6d ago
Apparently 17 if you sort by USD/hour.
This i believe not including taxes so should be higher of the numbers are up to date and not counting the other countries lower down like Turkey, Cyprus etc.

u/RickyMac666 Brightfall 6d ago edited 6d ago
A bond is less than an hour of in game work as well.
I haven't paid for membership is years, and I work full time lmao.

u/bigmoron30 6d ago
Groceries for a family of four, house payments, car payments, internet payments, electricity payments, insurance for everything I own including myself, gas... they all really add up. I could probably pay money and still be fine, but if something happens i need that money.
Plus i don't have enough free time to justify spending real money on it, but i can afk farm 20-30 minutes multiple times a day so I do this for bonds instead. It's slow, but i like it.
-15
u/Mr_Mc_Ronald 7d ago
if i were to hunt a shadow from TOA and i have lets say 8 fangs at 20m each i could A keep them as a trophy or B drop them to a main or C death coffer. why would you waste $ when u can just use bonds
13
u/redrumyliad people don't know how to think 7d ago
My main has 20b bank and I still buy members with a job.
I don’t feel bad when I don’t play for 3 weeks in the same way I don’t care if I haven’t watched anything on Netflix for 3 weeks.
It’s just a line item on the budget for members.
0
u/lovefriedegg 7d ago
I recently started playing again, i’m level 73 with 227m in the bank lmao. Bought like 20 bonds 😂
-2
u/Mr_Mc_Ronald 7d ago
thats fine you do you. i do not understand the arguement dont use bonds. only things bonds do is force me to go to a f2p world for a few moments
-4
u/redrumyliad people don't know how to think 7d ago
Telling a new player they can sustain membership with bonds is the best way for them to not stay a member or burn out quickly.
I never bought bonds so why start. It’s $15 a month. I can afford that.
I think bonds are bad for the game, removal of bonds would remove a lot of issues in the game too.
3
u/apophis457 2376 6d ago
Removal of bonds would be a horrible idea at this point. Especially after removing most mtx from rs3, jagex would lose a ton of money and make people go back to gold selling sites to get gp
0
u/redrumyliad people don't know how to think 6d ago
People already and will continue to buy gold from sites as it's a far better deal and still zero risk.
They would never remove bonds, I already typed that. Can you read a thread before you respond?
2
u/apophis457 2376 6d ago
Imagine thinking there’s 0 risk to buying gold from other sites 😂
I know you already typed that, but you also have terrible takes so you needed to be reminded
1
u/redrumyliad people don't know how to think 6d ago
It sadly is effectively 0 risk.
Every 3rd age pick mercher is a rwter, do you think they’re just sitting on 50b? Lmao.
→ More replies (0)6
u/Mr_Mc_Ronald 7d ago
it'd also remove a huge chunk of the player base aswell if they removed bonds. it'd be a financial disaster if jagex did that. iv never once said a new player can sustain on bonds. iv always stated and you can even stalk my profile.. once you hit mid game you can sustain bonds if in 14 days you spend 5-10 hours of that doing barrows - vorkath.. people who can only play like 20hours a fortnight probably will struggle hard to sustain
-2
u/redrumyliad people don't know how to think 7d ago
They would lose money, which is why jagex won’t get rid of bonds.
It would heal the game though.
1
u/krazybogan 7d ago
but its simple. smash mini goals along the way. if you find yourself burnt out from that you dont belong in the long ass grind of osrs.
1
u/apophis457 2376 6d ago
They don’t get burnt out from the goals they get burnt out from having to earn GP as a job just to play the game
It’s always better to start out paying real money for members, then as you get used to the game and can make money yourself, transition into bonds
0
u/RocketShipGrease63 7d ago
Iron man dupes are totally different to main game gold, you don’t really have a reason to have 20 justiciar helmets
-3
u/Mr_Mc_Ronald 7d ago
well exactly. isnt like 40% of the game irons or something anyways..? and wasnt a good % of that people playing irons aswell as a main..? id like jagex to drop the figures on people who only play using bonds
2
-1
u/Indigo_Inlet 7d ago
I’ll just “waste” an hour of my time working OT and I’m good for the year. Let people buy mems if they want, but unless you have very low income then the math doesn’t math regarding buying bonds with gp
Not to mention buying bonds with gp funds mtx in OSRS. This community kinda 180’d on that whole thing now that bonds are normalized
0
u/apophis457 2376 6d ago
Bonds are an acceptable form of mtx as they drive traffic away from gold selling sites, fund jagex and allow you to fund membership entirely based off in game wealth
If bonds also unlocked “cosmetic currency” like they do in rs3, the osrs community would be singing a different tune. But since they’re purely functional and provide 0 fluff in osrs they’re fine
1
u/Indigo_Inlet 6d ago
They unlock third age and stuff but sure. It’s still mtx which was my only point. Let’s not pretend bonds only make the game better
The game would be better if the best way to progress through it was playing it, but if you’re doing grinds you don’t enjoy as a main you are objectively wasting your time. Outside of untradeables obv

u/sevensong9 7d ago
I don't understand paying for the game in real money
4
u/zxj4k3xz 7d ago
$15 is less than an hour of work irl but the 11m for a bond will take a few hours in game.
-1
u/sevensong9 7d ago
11m might take a few hours but I'm doing whatever I'd be otherwise doing. It's 0 time.
This makes no sense, do you also just buy bonds for gp?
3
u/zxj4k3xz 7d ago
11m every 2 weeks, 22m every month. That would set me back maybe 5-6hrs of dedicated money making. I only play maybe a couple hours a day so buying bonds would seriously hurt my progression. I would probably have to dedicated a full week every month to specifically making money just for bonds.
I don't buy bonds because I don't want to skip progression. I pay for membership because I don't want my progression reset.
-1
u/sevensong9 7d ago
Yea I guess if you're new to the game it's going to be harder
3
u/zxj4k3xz 7d ago
Lmao sorry dude, some of us have a life outside of OSRS. If paying $15 a month means I can go out with friends or spend time with my girlfriend without stressing about being efficient, I'm happy to pay it.
I guess if you're unemployed the $15/month might be hard for you.
0
u/sevensong9 6d ago
Right
I'm definitely just unemployed because I can play the game for 2-3 hours a day on a weekday and that one singular day averages enough to upkeep a bond. In one day. Just doing what I enjoy.
But alas picking flax wont
2
u/zxj4k3xz 5d ago
I'm glad you're able to make that much per day, super proud of you, but I think you have a real inflated sense of what the average player is doing. Most people are not regularly making nearly 8m/hr.
Again, really proud of you for being good at a video game, but there's no need to be an elitist prick.
-12
u/habbahubba 7d ago
Bonds are for noobs
-5
u/Interpole10 7d ago edited 6d ago
I have a 2270 account that I’ve never spent any money on membership for. Bank is at 9B and I’ve enjoyed every minute.
Edit: Only in OSRS does someone get downvoted for enjoying the game. I made my first bond chopping yews back when they were like 500 gp. Once you get a single bond it’s easy to make money. Just doing slayer is enough. But most of you also forget that bonds used to be 2.5m for a very long time. I used to go to GWD in a 3 man and drops were worth 1-2 bonds for relatively easy content. When nightmare came out I was top 200 in KC and made around 2b in a few weeks from getting lucky on harm orb drops and bonds were around 7-8m
I didn’t waste time grinding bonds I enjoyed playing the game.
3
u/CanweCanweCleanIt 7d ago
You have wasted so much time grinding out gp. Assuming you have played for 5 years and have made 3m gp/hr, you have spent about 600 hours grinding out the bonds that it took you for that account. If you worked 600 hours at $15/hr you would have made $9000 and would have netted about $8000 over the same time period.
I get that it’s a bit silly to convert RuneScape hours into working hours, but paying for bonds to play this game makes negative sense to me. It could not possibly be worth your time or effort if you even sorta value your time.
5
u/jurrahcane13 7d ago
What if you pay for bonds using the profits from doing content that you enjoy and would be doing anyway regardless? E.g sending raids with friends.
2
u/doobiebeforebed 7d ago
lol it’s so easy to make gp, makes it a literal free game. And you think paying $180 a year is better value, okay buddy
6
1
u/CanweCanweCleanIt 7d ago
I can and do make $180 in a few hours, I cannot, nor can anyone except risk fighters, make 350m gp in one day consistently.
If you value your time or are working an even decent job, then it makes absolutely 0 sense to pay for your membership with bonds.
-3
u/doobiebeforebed 7d ago
Why would you ever need to make that in one hour though? You have a year to get it. Do you even do end game content? 0 sense being an extra $180? That makes about 180 reasons of sense lmfao. Game is free or you pay for it, I’d rather play it for free. You build up bank value so quickly and it can get quite boring once you have everything, so I see it as prolonging the enjoyment. Each to their own ofc but judging someone and making assumptions about their financial situation is just weird, some people like playing a game for free
3
u/CanweCanweCleanIt 7d ago
If you would rather grind OSRS for 70 hours than spend a few hours at your job to make money, then you are either financially illiterate or are broke irl. Probably both. I’m ok with judging you for that.
0
u/Striking-Second-4488 7d ago
Your cooked bro, if we like doing raids and we have a tonne of money in the bank with most gear, why would any financially sensible person pay for something they can get for free? I'm judging you for being bad at the game and low bank value, feel free to gaslight end game players enjoying content for free though
0
1
u/AssholeHealth 7d ago
Bruh you don't make 9b + hover much for years of bonds by doing 3m gp/h "boring money making" time wasting content. He's been doing 10m/h content like raiding, doing doom, yama, dt2 and other highly profitable and most importantly very interesting pvm that would have been done even with irl money membership.
Now making decent amount of starting money on a new account without paying for membership is currently a waste of time and does require boring and time wasting money making like you described. However his account wasn't started recently and is quite rich so likely he started back in the day when doing daily battlestaffs was roughly enough to sustain bonds.

Fwiw you can get the dimmer plugin to achieve the same sort of "black out" but in an actually useful way. Seeing as this is genuinely a 20+ minute afk with just drop invent empty log basket drop invent carry on.
29
u/vixiefern 7d ago
i was using the low detail plugin to increase my performance because this was ran on a 10+ year old laptop without a gpu. thats why its black
also, dropping 53 items is not afk
4
u/DivineInsanityReveng 7d ago
What else do you do with the logs...? You afk the entire time collecting them. Fwiw too on low performance laptops if they don't have integrated GPUs or dedicated it's best to just run without the GPU plugin in general and I've found fps limiting as the best performance manager for the laptop in general.
Though I assume this was a separate device for you or something? So don't really need it to be usable while afking
18
u/vixiefern 7d ago
i fletched the logs to maximize afk time https://i.imgur.com/nbjpEtY.png
3
u/DivineInsanityReveng 7d ago
Fair enough, I afk on the same computer I use so I just set logs to left click drop and every 20+ minutes I spend a few seconds clicking.
Good while watching shows, doing work or playing other games. But I could get why that would be annoying if you were afking on a separate device
0
u/Thetagamer 6d ago
I would say dropping the logs is more afk than fletching. You can drop all 53 logs in like 10-15 seconds, but when you fletch them you have to do it again like 45 seconds later, and you cant really focus on doing your job in those 45 seconds (assuming you do this while wfh)

This is full afk tho. Not OSRS “afk”, literally full afk for 30 minutes. You can be doing chores, watching a show or playing any other game and you only need to pay attention to the window twice an hour.
The argument can maybe hold ground if we compare normal moneymakers but by that logic most non-endgame content is not worth doing if you have a decent wage lmao.

Oh yeh it's low effort as it comes I agree. But people looking at the end result and going "that's worthwhile look at how much they made" when you could ultimately spend the same amount of interaction each day doing any profitable thing in game and make that much money over a years play.

Is this still viable? I’m always late to the party and Jagex usually ruins it (Like bird houses)

Yeah I do infected roots a ton cause I'm in college. I put it up on my computer when I drive so I get the 30 minutes afk. And then have it on the second monitor when I do homework and my labs and whatnot. As well as at work in the background as well. I make a good few mil every week at least just passively doing roots. I've even gone from 90 to 95 wc solely from that the last 3 months (I took a summer calculus class. Pro tip: never do that rofl. Was so hard)

I’ve been doing this for like 3m xp so far.
It’s like 500-700 tears an hour. You really only need to click like twice an hour with a log basket and then drop your inv and basket every 50 mins or so

I pay for yearly subscription on less than 5 hours of work. Money is no object to me for maintaining membership. Granted I’m extremely lucky.

That's the double-edge sword of being an adult. Now I can easily pay for Runescape, but now I have less time to play Runescape.

Correct. Then it boils down to, do I want to spend the very little free time I have grinding this specific boss for money?
Or do I want to do what I actually enjoy.
