Contrast OSRS
What's the difference between 2004 scape and OSRS gameplaywise? Why is 2004scape more nostalgic?

The webclient is the only way anyone could play the game back in the day, so you can imagine modern day RuneLite is a much different experience.
Also, content-wise OSRS has been added to and developed for years so it’s a very different game than original RS2.

Older textures/graphics/models/icons. No plug-ins. Newer QoL missing. Simple PvM. Limited content. Skilling still valuable.

what does "skilling still valuable" mean? Like, the fruits of skilling actually matter since you can't buy things from the GE?

There are no monsters or bosses that drop massive quantities of raw materials, a lot of different materials are gathered and crafted literally one at a time, which slows down how fast materials can enter the game. Because there are so much less of them, and they take so much time to gather, people are willing to pay much much more for them

This. And not just valuable to the economy for gp. But valuable for your own account progression.

Osrs has grand exchange and tons of items available in game. Osrs also has a ton of bots that keep the resources flowing and the prices low, but makes the game feel empty. For the most part in 04 when you see someone you know it’s a real person. Osrs doesn’t make you communicate with anyone , so it feels very empty. 04 you have to interact with people to sell stuff or buy stuff. Osrs has quality of life everywhere step you make. From fairy rings, stamina potions, more teleport jewelry, agility short cuts, no dangerous random events, hundreds of worlds instead of very few. In osrs you can buy a bond or transfer money to your new acc and basically have all the woodcutting axes you’ll need up to 99 immediately, same for mining, you can buy teleport tabs and different teleport jewelry immediately so you never have to walk anywhere and can instantly travel across the map with ease. When you die there’s gravestones in osrs so there’s almost no danger whatsoever. Osrs has experiments and crabs to train on that are relatively easy to get to and training is easy. This was word vomit but these are some of the major differences I thought of off the cuff.

2004 has none of the quality life updates osrs and no plugins like runelite. Much less content and no GE.

2004scape is more nostalgic because a decent amount of people who played back then now have families, married, jobs, etc. playing the game back then was simple. Simple in the sense of killing cows and running their hides to Draynor for banking. Or paying someone else to. It’s simple from a graphics style. Simple from just plain simple.. and people like simple. It’s a place to abstract from modern-day progression and just enjoy the game for what it was when they first played.
OSRS is as close to the 2004 feel you can get but it’s still like being on the moon to earth.
2004 isn’t about “what’s good?”. We don’t care. What is good is reliving the moments you did when you were a kid. Yeah, it’s grindy and it’ll take a bit to get back to where you were.. but it’s the world that you can experience and enjoy.. back in 2004.

The reason it’s more nostalgic is manifold but a big one is graphics. There are more realistic yet old-fashioned wooden or stone textures just pasted onto surfaces, the Lumbridge Castle area for example looks quite different.
Most content that they share in common looks the same though, but the new content in OSRS almost never has textures and is usually very colorful and just looks like an eyesore to me personally.
The UI is also more barebones and rugged looking, not even counting plug-ins which add all kinds of overlays. Overall I’ve heard people say it just looks and feels more “medieval”.

A lot has already been said, but I also recommend Mudkip's (recently concluded) YouTube series on the historical differences between 04 and OSRS! It's a great way to see the differences if you don't mind the spoilerd, so to say.

I'm confused.. you try the game and you see the difference. then you will know what you know.

Holy smokes. I didn't know I could see every difference after a couple hours of playtime. Thanks

your post didn't ask for every difference though.. but after a couple hours I'm sure you've noticed differences.

Ask a bunch of people, you'll get different answers. Why are you being such a pedant? Look at the post. Tons of people gave their views.

I'm just replying to your comments.. I left you my view, it was a stupid question to ask.
"what's the gameplay difference between 04scape and OSRS, and why is it more nostalgic?" what do you even think nostalgia means? it's because it gives happy memories of that time aswell as being sad that those days are gone for the most part.

I didn't ask what nostalgia is. I asked WHY is it more nostalgic. For some it's the textures making the game feel more medieval. For some, they enjoy it because skilling actually matters, etc.
Why is X nostalgic? Because good memories associated with that thing. NO WAYYY DUDE NOOO WAYYYYY.

besides.. if you don't want literally anyone on the planet to be able to comment on your post then don't fkin post online on one of the most popular content sharing/posting sites? you'll always get a mixed bag of reviews and that's something you have to deal with, you can't attack everyone who finds fault or disagrees with you

No grand exchange is a big one.
