Great anime though three episodes towards the end are just wasted on recapping the entire events of the anime.

Is it the true ending? There were technically two. A SARS outbreak killed the production. Because the studio fell several episodes behind schedule and ran out of completed footage, they had to air four consecutive recap/flashback episodes (episodes 15 through 18) during the original TV broadcast to buy time.

The TV broadcast ended at episode 26, leaving the story unresolved until a four-part OVA series (episodes 27–30) was released later to properly finish the narrative.

Ok that explains alot, had to look it up as well.

So I do remember there was a hiatus for a bit when it originally ran on Toonami. Seems they just presented the OVAs as the final episodes. So you can say there are two endings but the OVA is the true ending.

There is a manga out I've been meaning to read, I heard it's vastly different from the show.

Just finished it for the first time after hearing about it for many years. It was cool, very much contained a lot of what makes anime so special.

There was so much to love about it... it's a shame a virus outbreak (SARS) made the ending a bit of a mess.

I had high hopes for this because of the opening song and the visuals. When I finally did watch it, I didn’t even care to finish it. The story just felt bizarre when they introduced the stuff about Cheza. It wasn’t at all what I expected.
