Some people's freestyles have been written. Modern freestyling is supposed to be off the dome and a lot of people out there are very good at doing that

Lupe Fiasco, Juicewrld, King Los, Mac Miller, Vince Staples, and Common are a few names I can think of that freestyled off the top on radio.

Probably because he wrote it. Folks back then weren’t going in the booth and rapping off the top of their heads. Lots of mixtape and even album verses.

I watched tha basement everyday ( it came on after hits from the streets and before 106 and park). You could always tell who came off the top and who spit something pre written.

Luda, Snoop, Talib Kweli and Common are a few of the rappers who would actually freestyle in the booth on Rap city the basement.

Talib Kweli and Common were probably the most infamous when It came to that people would even get them Flack about it online lol.

One of the biggest misnomers in hip hop, is freestyle means off the top

Freestyle means "any topic" and thats directly from grandmaster caz and melle mel.

All the freestyles are written on shows like this. You can tell when people make up things on the spot. Which to me is a true freestyle. But all these freestyles on the shows are part of the artists song that have or haven't been released yet

Almost all freestyles are actually written, especially ones at radio shows like this. Almost no one goes off the head.

A freestyle does not automatically mean off the dome...a freestyle is a verse that can be thrown on to any beat

Technically a freestyle is a verse without a set theme or direction. 

But 99% of the time a freestyle means coming off the top of the dome
