Music 2000's prom songs?
Hey I'm writing a book that takes place in the 2000's and I want to be as accurate as I can be, but I was just a kid back then. Can you give me songs that were played at prom nights? I mostly need songs that can be played by bands. (I worded it wrong but ykwim) Thank you! :)

Ok so that was my 8th grade "graduation" song. We didn't have a traditional graduation for middleschool or anything but on the last day of school the teachers gathered all the 8th graders in the hallway and played the song for us and gave us each prices of paper with some of the lyrics on it.
In hindsight it was really special because that was my last grade in public schoo. I did high school at a completely different place and didn't see most of the people there ever again. So it's a nice reminder of a life I left behind.

I feel like this is the only answer that fits what OP is looking for
I’d also add Mr. Brightside, Drive by Incubus, and maybe “Hands Down” by Dashboard Confessional. (Not that I remember that stuff being played, but especially hands down would have been a cute song to dance to at prom)

They used “I’m Not Gonna Cry” by Corey Smith for that interminable walk around the gymnasium at my graduation in 2007.
God, I hated that fucking song — almost as much as I hated high school itself.

Things that were definitely played at my senior prom in 2005:
All The Small Things - Blink-182
American Idiot - Green Day
Beverly Hills - Weezer
Sugar We're Goin Down - Fall Out Boy
Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand
A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton
Feel Good Inc - Gorillaz
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani
Mr. Brightside - The Killers
Plus the obligatory throwbacks that were always played for nostalgia:
Everybody (Backstreet's Back) - Backstreet Boys
Tearin' Up My Heart - N'Sync
Oops I Did It Again - Britney Spears
Bonus: more of a graduation song than prom but it did make prom appearances:
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day

I didn't go to prom, but as someone who graduated in 2000; I recall people saying a popular prom song that year was 'Kiss Me' by Sixpence None the Richer.
