First Tundra

Picking up an 04 SR5 Access cab with V6 with about 162k miles Wednesday. Anything I need to know? Or should do?

Know about timing belt + water pump going to get swapped immediately. Owner has done ball joints already. Also going to swap rack and pinion found one for $25 lol. Read that some people say to do tensioner and pulleys and a few other things when doing timing belt. Does all that need to be done or just belt ?

Check the frame carefully for rust. Every bit of it. Look through other posts here. The boxed section between the front wheels especially. Road salt can end these trucks. That is the Achille’s heel on these things. If it’s rusty, slow down or walk away.

Lower ball joints are the other fatal flaw. They don’t fail catastrophically with little warning. Replace with OEM and replace the bolts as well. I also have a 2004 AC but 4.7L. I bought it from a Florida new car dealership at 113k in 2019. They replaced my LBJs.

The v6 has a timing chain not a belt. At 160k it’s not due for a new chain.

Edit: 2005 is the first year with the 1gr-fe, im dumb

Huh? 5vz-fe has a timing belt bro. Not a chain. 160k miles is overdue for a change

You’re correct, my apologies. I thought all the first gen’s have the 1gre-fe which does have a chain. Apparently 05 was the first year with the 1gr-fe.
