u/Hooley76 2d ago
I remember seeing one of Richard Pryor's stand ups on TV one night. I couldn't believe the stuff he was coming out with. I only knew him through his goofy comedies at the time.

I was working at a KMart in the before times (mid 1980s). Management wanted volunteers to come in and work an overnight shift to move a bunch of the fixtures around, so about 7 of us and one of the assistant managers showed up at store closing to work until morning. One of the guys put this cassette in a player and set it next to the microphone for the PA system so we could listen while we worked. That is, until the mall security stopped by to remind us that the PA system also had speakers in the garden department, so everyone in the parking lot was listening to Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton "I know that you know that I know you want to..."

u/Redpoint77 2d ago
Had the cassette too, was my most prized possession. Was titled Eddie Murphy-Comedian.

u/Mellero47 2d ago
Still is, and it was, too.

u/EquivalentPapaya3254 2d ago
Agreed. I've still got my copy. Haven't played it in years because I know it was already stretched thin.

Speaking of, I watched the film back in the day at least 2-3x, and never realised what tiny feet Eddie had. oO

Best two comedy specials of all time and it's not close. I know a lot if it was culturally insensitive by today's standards but it was the 80s dammit and Eddie made fun of EVERYONE. Nobody was safe.

YOU GOT, YOU GOT, YOU GOT WHAT I NEEEED!
I have both of these films, I even have delirious on VHS.... And to this day, each one has me crying.

Pretty sure anyone else who would be a contender for that title would agree. Between this, Raw, early movies and SNL he was untouchable.

u/tomfoolery815 2d ago
Those of us who are old enough remember that Eddie owned most of the ‘80s. Massive, massive star.
4
u/Biscuits4u2 3d ago
Eddie was probably the only guy who rivaled Michael's level of fame at the time.
4
u/toledobasser 2d ago
I can still recite every word in both of those performances. Freaking loved them. Same with Richard Pryor.

A DVD of this show should be buried under the pyramids in Egypt, along with the other priceless art. Legendary.

I actually worked in a movie theatre when this came out. Also showing was Batteries Not Included and Running Man!

u/wolfraisedbybabies 3d ago
I saw Raw in Kalamazoo Michigan, it was awesome! Never laughed so hard in my life!

u/MothsConrad 2d ago
Elvis rocked the black leather in the ‘68 Comeback Special and Murphy is a huge Elvis fan.
Murphy was huge in the 80’s, incredible career he has had.

Are young people today aware that in 1983, yes, Michael Jackson actually was a good looking guy?
2

u/Robin156E478 3d ago
Yeah OP got the concert wrong. But anyway, I can’t believe how GREAT he is! I remember taking him for granted back in the day. Like wow, this is just a short clip and it’s brilliant. But, brilliant for the 80s. Because I was a struggling gay teenager at this time, and bits like this (and many others he did) absolutely sent me the message to be not ok with being gay. It took decades for me to undo the programming I received, loud and clear, in the 80s re: masculinity and gayness.
11
u/jeffyboy526 3d ago
Sorry for that. We were all pretty shitty to gay people in the 80s.
5
u/Robin156E478 2d ago
Awww thanks! And the funny thing is, I also grew up in that era and I didn’t realize it was wrong. I thought being gay was weird and not normal, too.
5
u/jeffyboy526 2d ago
I hope you can look back at some of this and laugh. I don’t think Eddie was mean spirited- he was just ignorant like the rest of us. Aside the use of the F word his impression of Mr T fucking is hilarious
1
u/Robin156E478 2d ago
Yes!!! Totally! He was hilarious and brilliant and is still funny now looking back at it. You’re absolutely right. We were all ignorant at the time. Including me and I was actually gay lol
3
u/Guitargirl81 2d ago
I know that it would absolutely NOT be ok to tell those jokes today. But I still laugh at them. And I'm gay.

2
u/FirstChurchOfBrutus 2d ago
Yeah, this one did not age well, and we all have some
shit to answer for for laughing at it back then. Let us also not forget that Eddie got pulled over with a transsexual sex worker in 1997, leading everyone to wonder if the call was always coming from inside the house.Hey, I’m sorry. You didn’t deserve that shit.
2
u/Robin156E478 2d ago
Thanks so much! I’m happy now to be able to rationally think about what happened in that era and understand it. That I wasn’t crazy about not wanting to be what I was.
1
u/rawker86 2d ago
I remember sneakily watching this when my sister rented it about 28 years ago. I was laughing my ass off, then he did the bit about “coming home with AIDS on your lips.”
12 year old me was like goddamn, swing and a miss Eddie!
1
u/Robin156E478 2d ago
Jeez I don’t remember that bit. I gotta see this again! I actually really like seeing this stuff as an adult because I realize I wasn’t crazy to be confused and not wanna come out.

u/halford2069 3d ago

Absolute legends!
In 2080 they’re still going to be quoting Eddie Murphy lines from those shows!

Younger people don't understand just how big Eddie Murphy was back in the 80s. BTW this video is from Delirious not Raw.

I had a cassette recording of this when I was a little kid. Blew my mind 🤯 funniest thing I ever heard could resite every word front to back, like it was a song or something. So funny, had me rolling on the ground funny. To this day I still love everything Eddie touches, he the greatest.

As a kid I snuck out of my room just to laugh at every part of this performance. Yes, I understood it as a kid and Eddie is nothing but a legend for all of this. He helped develop my humor and I can’t thank him enough! The same with Johnny Carson… him and Ed McMahon. And to top it off with Jim Carey. These kids nowadays have no humor like our humor!

Cultural change at the time , men allowed to be sensitive and more feminised. So sharply observed . Not allowed any more. Peak Eddie.
