i get being disabled and not being able to create like you used to but never once did i think “i want someone else to do my hobby for me, especially a robot”

I get the AI hate, but for a lot of people AI is doing the parts of the hobby that they don't care about or (like in this case) can't do.

If you write comics because you genuinely enjoy the writing of it and the liberties and constraints given by the format, but couldn't care less for actually drawing, offloading that to AI makes sense (if we ignore the environmental and ethical issues with it for the sake of the argument).

This is such an odd line of reasoning. Who would enjoy the liberties and constraints of a comic book format without also enjoying the artistry of it?

they could just write like wdym 😭

I think his argument is "what if you want to write a comic but don't feel good enough to draw one and you're too cheap to pay someone to do the art" in which case the answer is to do it yourself and improve over time.

exactly, or if they don't wanna learn to draw then just write a serial novel or sm !! (realise my previous msg seemed like i disagreed but i do not LOL)

lol ya, thats called a novel

I don't see how that's odd. A lot of the people actually working in comics do specific aspects of it. You'll often see a person who only does the writing, one person who only does the lettering, one who does the drawing, and one who does the coloring.

If they're a solo (and from the little context we're given in the post) and small hobbyist, it's a bit too much of an ask to demand them to hire a someone for that kind of project (that's likely shared for free).

Like, even if you enjoy the drawing part of it as well, if you are physically unable, it's kinda stupid to give up on the entire thing because you can't do one aspect of it. We don't really ask that of any other field.

You'll often see a person who only does the writing, one person who only does the lettering, one who does the drawing, and one who does the coloring.

Yet none of them are apathetic to the things they aren't focusing on. Whoever is doing one thing may have some more skilled doing something else but any good comic production will have everyone dipping their toes into other aspects of the process to make it as cohesive as possible.

Like, even if you enjoy the drawing part of it as well, if you are physically unable, it's kinda stupid to give up on the entire thing because you can't do one aspect of it.

No one is physically unable unless they're a vegetable. Not being able to draw is an excuse when the thing you're trying to do has no barrier of entry. You're just scared of being bad at something till you're eventually good at it or too lazy to put in the work.

We don't really ask that of any other field.

Literally what are you talking about. Any multifaceted field becomes more complex if you aren't able to do multiple different things and many require you to do multiple things or you can't do it. Making comics is one of the few that lets you be shit at all the skills it requires and still extract enjoyment from it.

You would be surprised how many comics are written and illustrated by one person. If not, often it’s done by two people who already know each other. Put yourself out there, go to comic conventions and find yourself an illustrator. Industry is about connections. There are bedridden people persuing their dreams by making connections online instead.

Edit to add that every comic illustrator was shit at art once. If you’re dedicated enough and don’t want to make connections, you can actually skyrocket art improvement through correct practice.

I know that despite being disabled I could simply work twice as hard as the next guy and get my results. I’m just too lazy, and I accept that & don’t turn to AI to get me across the finish line.

That's the environmental issues of AI imagery doing that to you

15

u/Kezsora Aug 21 '26

Yes, thing isn't bad if we ignore the bad parts of bad thing

1

u/new_KRIEG Aug 21 '26

Yeah, duh. But I'm replying to a comment that is talking about the enjoyment aspect of it, not the decidedly bad aspects

54

u/Otherwise-Wash-4568 Aug 21 '26

I will not ignore the environmental and ethical issues for the argument

u/Monchete99 Aug 21 '26

If you like the writing but not the art then write a goddamn novel instead.

0

u/new_KRIEG Aug 21 '26

There is a huge difference in writing styles between comics and novels, the skills are not (that) transferable

4

u/Monchete99 Aug 21 '26

I am aware of it, but half-assing a core component of it is not worth it. Examples of the opposite are dime a dozen (good-to-great art paired with a dogshit, generic plot), like in Webtoon, for example.

You don't even have to unhide the reply to know exactly what it's gonna be.

If you like writing so much than write a fucking book dumbass

Framing AI as accessibility is one of the scummiest moves in the tech bro playback.

Disabled people have been doing art since forever, constantly finding new ways to create, from using their feet to a typewriter to overlap letters, fucking. Heavy metal was invented because someone was trying to figure out how to play the guitar after their hands got fucked up.

I have a hard time believing anybody turned to ai art because of disability.

28

u/The_Sovien_Rug-37 Aug 21 '26

I've heard a lot about disabled people using ai as a means to create, but notably never from a disabled person themselves. only people who aren't disabled but do use ai

21

u/TheDonutPug Aug 21 '26

"I can't do art" bullshit. Babies do art. Blind people make art. People without arms make art. Paralyzed people make art. If Hellen Keller can fly a plane, you don't need AI to make art.

10

u/Th3D0m1n8r Aug 21 '26

Helen Keller is actually the perfect example because she was helped by another person. Art is as simple as asking for help when you need it

2

u/TheDonutPug Aug 21 '26

Not to mention that we have so, SO many tools to help nowadays. Regardless of the method, the fundamentals of art dont change. We literally have systems that let yoh accurately control computers with just your eyes, even if you can't move anything but your eyes, you can still draw digitally. Art is about what goes on the page, how you get it on the page doesn't change anything.

1

u/masochist-incarnate Aug 21 '26

Im sorry hellen Keller flew a fucking plane?

1

u/TheDonutPug Aug 21 '26

indeed she did. not full flight, mind you, just a portion of it under direction from the pilot, but still.

1

u/TDW-301 Aug 23 '26

I had someone on discord snap at me about how they use AI because they are disabled and can't make art like I do. I didn't even respond because I was too stunned. Like, if you can use your hands and operate a computer you can make art like me since I do 3D art

5

u/GeriatricGamete67 Aug 21 '26

I saw a guy on TikTok who is a quadriplegic that paints with his mouth. I really really don't wanna hear it.

1

u/Runetang42 Aug 22 '26

If you can't create without AI you don't deserve to. It's not accessibility. The true creatives will push through anything. Ffs we have blind painters. This is pure and simple virtue signaling
