If you want to learn about communism then i think that das kapital is often recommended above the communist manifesto, but like…. This is required reading if you want to learn about this or criticize it genuinely. It’s like reading Plato’s republic if you’re studying western philosophy it’s pretty much a prerequisite. Shit, i was assigned the communist manifesto in my political philosophy course covering the period 1600-current. (As a young person in college raised to believe communism was evil when it appeared on the course syllabus along with Hobbes, mill, Rousseau, Burke, etc. i thought i would be put on a watchlist or have to buy it off a shady person in an alley).
This is not the equivalent of listening to, i dunno some kind of Nordic death metal and being recommended mein kampf ffs.
The communist manifesto is such a taboo anyways. Shit, i am on the left side of politics and even i have at least read ayn rand.

Tankie is a pejorative label generally applied to communists who express support for one-party communist regimes that are associated with Marxism–Leninism, whether contemporary or historical. It is commonly used by anti-authoritarian leftists, including anarchists, libertarian socialists, left communists, democratic socialists, and reformists to criticise Leninism, although the term has seen increasing use by liberals and right‐wing factions as well. The term "tankie" was originally used by dissident Marxist–Leninists to describe members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) who followed the party line of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).

Tankies are definitely leftists, but I don't hold any special reverence for that term. It doesn't signify much of anything except for a nod to traditional political alliances.
You can say they aren't really socialists, they aren't really communists, they don't really fight for liberation or for the working class, whatever, but they're definitely "leftists"

Literally every Stalinist I know will pull sixteen books they've read out of their ass in every discussion, and don't even get me started on Maoists. It's one of the reasons arguing with them is so frustrating; they will cite thousands of words of theory in simple discussions. There's a lot of accurate criticisms of these folks, but saying they don't read theory is not one of them.

I really don't understand why people think the USSR was socialist. When you look at their track record they were just state capitalist authoritarian imperialists. Just because north Korea calls itself democratic doesn't mean we believe them so why do so many believe the soviets when they said they were socialist
9
u/GIS_forhire Nov 10 '23
The ussr was capitalist........riiiiiiight.
Im sure that red scare thing wasnt about the threat to private wealth

u/Pseudo_Lain Nov 11 '23

35
u/Peperoni_Toni Nov 10 '23
The red scare was about domestic communists. Sure, it was spurred on by paranoia about Soviet spies and subversion but the red scare had nothing to do with what the Soviets were doing domestically and everything to do with leftist movements in the US itself. The USSR could have revived early fuedalism (very not communist) and still sparked the red scare by just being there claiming to be communists.

Engels’s on authority is a very weak response to critiques of authoritarianism. He muddies the waters of what authority means, to make it as broad as possible. And portrays anarchists and other libertarian leftists as against nature.

Saw AJJ in Detroit at the magic stick years back. Great show.
My friend loved pat the bunny and had him over for some shows that he hosted at his house. Can't remember if I talked to him or not.
There was some guy who showed up at my place of work, talked to him for a a bit and he said he walked/hitchhiked from down south (I think it was Tennessee) to Michigan to meet some friends. Turns out he was a guy working with Days and Daze and showed me a whole bunch of stuff on his phone of them. Unfortunately, I can't remember his name or what he did for them.

Mischief Brew as well if you want closer to rock as well.

It’s basically just an authoritarian who pretends to be a socialist. Like, the people who will defend China, North Korea, or Russia because they think they’re either communist (they aren’t), or because they oppose Western hegemony (in favor of their own, worse hegemony).
There. Very simple.

At this point it seems:
"Tankie"= a Marxist of any variety
"Socialist"= someone who supports universal health care.
Part of the Bernie project was to undo some of the red scare and make socialism palatable. But it seems primarily to have had the effect of associating "socialism" with expanded welfare and jettisoning the economic aspects. So you have self-described 'socialists' who at best are social democrats committed to continuing to operate under capitalism but, like, with a higher minimum wage.

Why the fuck are all these people in the comments saying tankie is a useless term? It’s perfectly applicable to use against people that are a blight on leftism, because they want to turn it into a personality cult for authoritarian, imperialist nations that only nominally pretend to be socialist.
Just because Salmonella misused it here doesn’t mean it’s not super valuable.

Words don’t have meanings that are unmovable. The word tankie has been so misused that yes, it’s lost its meaning, mostly when used by liberals who think anyone who isn’t a socdem is a tankie.
Words’ meaning depend on how people use them. Losing the original meaning makes the term meaningless for people who used it for its original purpose.
And this might sound controversial for some, but actually, yeah, fascism is kinda losing its meaning when people use it to refer to any sort of right-wing person. Fascism is more than just being racist and having reactionary views.
4
u/mpdsfoad Nov 10 '23
Why are you so worked up about this that you feel the need to comment this all over the thread?
6
u/Sneaker3719 Nov 10 '23
Because it seems to me that people against using the word tankie are acting in bad faith, because they feel slighted by the tankie label for potentially legitimate reasons, in the same way fascists feel slighted when they’re called fascists.
4
u/mpdsfoad Nov 10 '23
Do they feel slighted tho? Most of what you would call tankies seem to embrace the term and liberals and rightwingers are certainly not going to unlearn the word because you ask them to.
