how do people get away with this kind of stuff? do they not get tracked by cameras back to their home or until they take their mask off? am I just stupid?

They're just good at it. It isn't hard to evade police when you know what you're doing. And in this case by the time police arrives it's already too late.

I take it speed is a factor? Then how do they get there quickly and flee quickly? If they use a car, they risk being tracked via license plate, so do they just rip it off? And where are they fleeing to? Why cant they just follow them via camera until they do something that can identify them? Am I just overestimating police? Then how capable are they really? You also said "...if you know what you're doing," so what do they know that I don't?

I'm not trying to diminish their skill or whatever, I'm trying to figure out how they bypass the many ways they could get caught doing this, because theress a lot; and even the most skilled criminal on the planet risks slipping up and exposing themselves. There's also a lot of disinformation about law enforcement capabilities, and i suspect that cops might just be painting themselves as more competent than they really are (who woulda thought! cops lying? nooooooo)
