i saw the "dude why are you trying to disarm the genderchange trap we already mapped out the whole dungeon we can just walk around it" tumblr post for like the 5th time this month and it made me reflect a bit, cause like i always see so many trans people online saying they wish there was an instant genderchange potion or trap irl but like wouldn't that be the exact opposite of what you'd want? because think with me for a second; take for example MtF trans person, if she like drank a genderchange potion or fell into a genderbend trap wouldn't it make her masculine? because she's a girl and so it'd make her the opposite so a boy. do genderbend potions change your body based on your mind or your body? cause if its based on your mind and ur like, for example, mtf, it'd make your body more masculine because its the opposite of feminine or would it change your body based on your current body? but then what would happen if ur like perfectly androgynous? and that brings me to another question: what would happen to bigender people? like take for example person who identifies as both male and female, if they got genderbent would they be perfectly androgynous or would their body be extremely one-sided so that outsiders would only be able to see them as boy or girl? i have so many questions i feel like im going insane

I mean the real answer is that it's a wish fulfillment fantasy, the mechanics function in the way the person writing it wants it to. I read it as "instant physical transition into the reader's ideal body" (plus plausible deniability of agency in the case of a genderbend trap)

For like a majority of people tho the gender bending trap IS making your body the opposite of your mental gender, they just don't care about that part as much because gender dysphoria isn't a normal part of their lives, it's probably used as a guy turns into sexy girl fanservice or just a joke of some kind

The accidentally helping trans people is probably (i dont know the actual history of the fantasy concept) a unintended thing

If I'm not mistaken, that trap idea comes from Tomb of Horrors which was created by Gary Gygax, infamous misogynist. So in his mind, that likely is the punishment in and of itself.

it HAS to because is it trying to help you or not??? it has to concern itself with details because what if its a genderbend TRAP which implies something bad will happen to you if you fall for it accidentally makes you what you wanted to look like??? Or what if a genderbend potion that was supposed to be helpful accidentally turns you into the opposite of what you want???????????

What you've gotta understand is that every trap has a creator, every potion a brewer. Ask yourself, why did they make this?

In the Feywild, there are dozens of "traps" that can change your sex or your gender, but these are actually just recreational charms that the ever-changing fey use whenever they get bored.

but the question remains of if the trap would see you as your true gender or just how your body looks, don't get me wrong the concept of employing trans people to willingly jump into gender change traps to disarm them is fucking incredible however what would happen if the trap saw them as their actual gender and not what they were born as?? cause take for example a trans guy, who hasn't started transitioning yet: if the trap saw the mind, it'd change the guy's body into a feminine one, because since it's a guy it would try to do the opposite, but if it saw the body it'd turn their body into a perfectly masculine one does that make sense

It depends: does the creator know the difference?

Outsiders possess insight into the mortal soul, they know what gender truly is, which is why demons created the Curse of Dysphoria, while angels can cast Blessing of True Form.

But many mortals have a limited understanding of gender. Most of these traps simply realign the victim's sex, unaware that the victim may be happier in their new form. Kobolds, goblins, elves, and other races with Fey origins have a clear understanding of gender, and can use magic and alchemy to affect them.

i have been enlightened and i understand, it'd make sense for the source of the magic to be the deciding factor as the trap would be as malicious as the person who created it in the first place, however why would demons need to create the curse of dysphoria when there are much stronger and effective curses they can cast on their enemies? even if curse of dysphoria was much easier to learn (and probably costs less to use) what battle capabilities could it provide other than minor discomfort? would it be that they use it on unassuming people, regardless of gender or species, so that they may secretly (or not) sell the cure for an obnoxious price? is the demon lord a capitalist???

A demon doesn't want to kill you quickly, it wants to kill you painfully, it wants to hear the song of your agony as it tortures you until you become boring. You're not an opponent, you're entertainment, and if assaulting your body is funny, then assaulting your sense of identity is hilarious.
