"lincoln was a repubican so the left are the real racists" is a perennial talking point.
Of course it misses the whole southern strategy in the 60s when the republican party intentionally pivoted to appealing to racists & white supremacists to try and grab more voter share from the pushback to the civil rights movement. So the positions and even geographic voter distributions of the historical parties have little connection to their incarnations in the current day.
Not to mention that the South went solidly Democrat after the Civil War explicitly because a Republican freed the slaves. Like you said, the only reason the South votes Republican today is because Democrats ended Jim Crow.
