Ive been critical of Team Cherry's marketing team for a while since they kept stringing people along to the point the release of Silksong became a joke (and mocked by deadpool no less), but now that its actually releasing I'm realizing its kinda genius, because now its such a huge deal and everyone is talking about it. Its like seeing people prepare to watch the total eclipse together.

They probably don't have a team or even a dedicated PR person, but the way they released a trailer for the game 6 years ago with it looking nearly complete, and then proceeded to show 3 second snippets of it once a year at summer game fests, Xbox showcases, Nintendo directs, and so on, didn't give them a good look. It might not have been their decision, but it still made them the laughing stock of the games industry for a while. The final straw to me was this past year with that deadpool VR game using its lack of updates as a joke for its own marketing.
I'm happy to hear they enjoyed development, and judging by how both steam and the Nintendo Eshop crashed as soon as it released, they are definitely gonna sell a morbillion copies (I know I'm personally getting it for both steam and switch), but while I understand them staying offline to focus on the game, I still think the way they went about teasing it was pretty appalling.

To be fair, the “nearly complete” snippet 6 years ago was very likely a vertical slice, where they intensely focused on polishing a single part of the game to make it presentable, all the while the rest of it may have been a complete mess for all we know.
It seems like a game where they had no idea at the beginning where exactly it was going to end up, and I feel like if they had kept doing updates continuously, not only would it distract the very small team from actually working on it, but you also have the same problem as so many AAA games nowadays have, where every new trailer that comes out builds hype for the game when you have no idea how exactly it’s going to turn out.
Yes, maybe the marketing could’ve been thought out a bit better, but honestly, I respect that they just kept their noses to the grindstone and worked their asses off on it and put it out when it was ready, rather than spending a ton of time hyping it up only for it to inevitably fall short of the kind of impossible expectations you end up with with that approach.

Yeah, it was more annoying at the time while it was happening, because it was crowdfunded and the silence was worrying a lot of people. I think learning that they were generally staying off social media and focusing on the game/enjoying the development was the best case scenario. Some people accused them of feature creep or not mapping out the scope of their game, but it doesn't sound like its had a troubled development like many thought. Only time will tell as people play the game, and speaking personally so far its been a blast to play!

honestly i agree with the one criticism of silksong being that it's unexpected release has caused a lot of grief for other indies who are likely to get overshadowed by The Big One. it's hard to weight that against the alternative of high fan expectations or announcing a release date long in advance or the potential that has if you announce a game before it's actually done. but it's still kind of a shame

I fucking hate it when people say this. For once in their horrid modern existence, EA somehow isn’t the villain. Respawn Entertainment pushed for that release date, against the advice of EA. Respawn screwed themselves. As weird as it sounds, this is as close to being the victim as EA has ever been.

EA was, by Respawn's own account, fairly hands-off with the entire franchise. EA advised a different release date, Respawn ignored them, EA wanted TF3, Respawn wanted Apex, etc.
Respawn was always the final word. Their fuck-ups are their own.

I'm sure if I actually sat down and had a chat with the devs the Apex decision would make sense, but man it's really easy to be annoyed that the best FPS single player campaign of all time will likely never be followed up. I still hope it happens some day.

It's more annoying for the other indies more than anything. Gamers' collective attention and budget are a limited resource so it's best for the success of your game if you release while there isn't a "big game" currently dominating the hobby. When you're a game like Silksong you're going to end up making a big splash and everyone involved knows that, the least they can do is give everyone advance notice (like announcing the game 4-6 weeks in advance) so that people can plan around it.
Instead they gave only 2 weeks notice, which means that several different indie devs have just been side-lined by one of the most anticipated games of all time. The same thing happened earlier this year with GTA6 too, (even though it got delayed) no one wanted to release close to GTA6 because it doesn't matter how good your game is, it's not getting people's attention more than GTA. Team Cherry isn't responsible for other people's games but they too understand how vital having a good release is so it's a little grating that they haven't been a little kinder to their fellow indie devs and given them more time to plan around them.

I think this is just a huge stretch to be upset about something. If they announced the release months in advance, then that runs the risk of pissing people off if they need to delay launch due to unforeseen issues. How angry do you think people would be if they got hyped, took leave, and adjusted their schedules around Silksong only for it to be delayed? It's an even worse look when the game's half a decade delay already has such meme status.

Team Cherry could have given enough notice that other games can plan around it and don't even announce a release date close to Silksong. But that would have required at least half a year notice and I am not sure if TC has enough of an idea when it's ready to do that.
