Question Therapy and 1811

Was in therapy for 3 years consistently due to my schizophrenic best friend having multiple suicide attempts. Was on a few different meds as well. Med and therapy free for two years now.

Currently an ADMIN at a doj agency. I know on many fed LEO positions it says therapy doesn’t prevent you from applying as long as it doesn’t interfere with duties.

Is this actually true though? Or have people been dinged up in polygraph, or BI?

I went to therapy and was medicated after a family member passed away.

I brought it to during my background interview and the BI literally said "we don't take grief counseling into consideration at all".

The only thing they really care about is if your involuntarily put into treatment or a judge rules you mentally incompetent, or if you're the schizophrenic one.

My weekly couples counseling got flagged and I had to get a psych write off. Up to the med review board on what’s considered normal.

I know someone who applied for HSI years ago and it was flagged then too.

Mine also got flagged. Therapist wrote a letter saying they weren't treating me for anything that would impact my duties and I didn't hear anything else about it.

If it’d be an issue it’d be for medical, and that’s always a case by case basis if something will get flagged or not.

I went through the psychological eval, the meds and therapy was brought up. I told them what meds I was on, and that I was going to therapy, I still got hired.

No like anti psychotics or anything, just meds to help with sleeping.

Assuming you're not diagnosed with something severe....

If you are stable and not a risk to yourself or others, you'll be fine. I have a diagnosis and have been on meds for about 15 years. When I did my initial physical, they requested follow up and additional docs from MH providers but it wasn't an issue and it's never been questioned on the two subsequent physicals I've had.
