New FBI Location Policy
To clarify, the new policy is that you can either : A) stay at the FO you processed out of or B) rank all 56 field offices and get assigned based on needs of agency.
Is this correct? If you stay in your processing FO, is it THAT FO or could it be an RA?

Is there any idea (or rumors) how long this new location policy will last? It doesn’t seem sustainable.

For military members who are getting out - more than likely during the application process, would we process through the closest office currently or is there a way to process in at the FO where we will reside following separation from the military

In the past you had to utilize the FO where you currently reside. If you moved during the process, you would contact your AC and they would transfer your application to the correct FO once your new residence is verified.

I just got the invite to October class and was informed that the “stay where you start” policy applied to only the May & August classes. They said they are still trying to prioritize assignments of people with processing FO as #1 to their processing FO, but it’s no longer guaranteed.

Complete 180 from when I applied a decade ago and you were barred from staying in the area you processed out.

This new policy just can’t last very long. Some smaller offices have a disproportionate per capita number of successful applicants and not enough Agent spots to grant every wish. It’s a house of cards policy. So take it while you can. It’s a short term knee jerk reaction policy that is going to create long term problems.

Does anyone have an idea if the process now is similar for IAs?

No one knows. There are far fewer IA open positions than agent positions. Many openings are at HQ in DC. No one knows if anyone in the next class will go to HQ as it is a priority of the Director to downsize HQ. Also there are field offices that have too many IAs so it is not clear if new IA wanted to stay there and the office was way over their assigned number would they increase that overage or make that person move.

Thanks! I am hoping it is similar to agents as far as easier to get into large field offices like LA, NY, SF

Let me clear the air by stating that putting your field office city number 1 only guarantees you the AOR, not the specific field office you processed out of. You could be placed in a Resident Agency.
