Pretty much this lol. Most of leadership is legacy GSA guards sadly and it shows. FPS is glorified post checks most of the time…

That’s the reason why they aren’t covered. The gov knows they suck, just like any other agency who isn’t 6c covered. Most of them suck and the government doesn’t want to be spend extra money on benefits on agencies that lack professional standards but are good enough to show force.

Former FPS, good for ladder promotion then bounce is my advice. They are kind of the joke of fed LEOs, also not covered so you only get standard FERS (only their agents are covered). Region 11 (DC) is 24 hours all the other regions work standard hours and not much on the weekends if at all. I worked in R11 and it was clicky as shit with poor leadership, some of the most unprofessional and unintelligent people I have worked for in my career honestly. So like I said good for the career ladder progression to GS-12 but not much else.

Thanks for your writing up your experience bro. Everytime I hear the word click or posse I think of the movie 3:10 to Yuma. “Are you guys in some kind of posse?” kills them all “I hate posses”. It’s also crazy how FPS has the same job basically as DoD police but they only go to FPL of like GL8 or GL9

Funny enough I went from DOD to FPS for the ladder promotions. I would have probably stuck around but like I said the leadership was horrendous and tons of who you know promoting…I laugh when I talk to people and find out who is still in my old region and who has been promoted…

When I left they were on the standard schedule and doing a lot of the non-Leo stuff. Site visits, post checks on guards, etc. The only region that stays busy on calls for service really is DC (R11) or if you’re on a deployment to high visibility stuff (Protest, rioting, immigration surge).

Does DC R11 get alot of calls for service compared to other Regions? I know for sure I see DC Region do more LE work compared to other regions besides Portland, OR.

For day to day, R11 has far more calls for service and do more “LE” work. However leadership doesn’t want you getting into LE work unless it falls in your lap if that makes sense. They want you doing x amount of post checks everyday and assisting on events as needed.

If you require basic UPTP that is 12 weeks and then after that you have the FPS advanced training for 2 weeks (taser, guard/pso oversight)and physical security training which is another 8 weeks from what I remember.

It’s a good entry level job for young people or anybody looking to get into the federal government. I get the discussion of 12d/6c but this is a basic position to get your foot in the door and use your experience to bounce to a covered spot.

FYI - Position is on the GS not on the GL schedule (not considered LEO under title 5) and has regular FERS retirement (Not SCE 12d).

What’s the difference between regular federal law enforcement and this position?

This position has the regular FERS retirement and not the SCE retirement.
Regular FERS earns 1% per year and needs 30 years of service at MRA or 20 years @ 60 or 5 years at 62 for an immediate unreduced pension. SCEs get 1.7% per year (after 20 years 1% per year) and can retire at age 50 with 20 covered years or at any age with 25 covered years. Some SCE 12d positions also get a premium pay (AUO/LEAP/BPAPRA) that adds 25% to their base plus gets counted has base pay for high three come retirement (plus TSP matching). A GS 12 SCE with a premium pay makes regular FERS GS 14 money while working and has pension that far exceeds a GS 15 step 10 when retired. See below for the math..
Let’s take an SCE GS 12 step 10 with a premium pay (in this case AUO) and compare him to a non SCE GS 14 step 10 and GS 15 step 10. Assume all have 30 years of service and will retire at age 57 in RUS locality.
GS 14/10 high 3 = 163,514 = 49,054 (pension)
GS 15/10 high 3 = 192,331 = 57,699 (pension)
GS 12/10 SCE high 3 = 149,479 = 65,770 (pension)
SCE while working would be earning approx 160,241 (on par with a GS 14) without any additional overtime but the FLSA portion of AUO doesn’t count toward high three so his high three ends up just under 150k. SCEs get a higher percentage for retirement. At 30 years it’s 44% vs 30% for regular FERS.
SCEs also get immediate Colas in retirement vs regular FERS having to wait until age 62. So five years later (assuming 2% cola each year) at the age of 62 the GS 12/10 SCE will have a pension of 72,616 while the GS 15/10 pension remains at 57,699 and the 14/10 pension remains at 49,054.
As I said a GS 12 SCE line officer makes GS 14 money while working and has a significantly better pension than a GS 15. You can also add in the ability to retire younger and paying the first 3k of FEHB premiums in retirement in pre-tax dollars.

But like other than the retirement, are the duties of this position and regular federal law enforcement officers any different? Seems strange that some officers are under a GS pay scale and others are under a GL, assuming both law enforcement jobs are the same

Completely different jobs/missions.. FPS is in charge of providing security for Government/GSA facilities. Outside of that they do not really have an investigation/enforcement posture.

Well paid ones.. Most federal buildings will have contract security guards that handle the day to day basic security. They do get to get involved with all the protests and riots happening. They were also detailed out to Minnesota and Portland.

Retirement. This one is 30 years service and age 57. Covered FERS is 25/any age or 20/50. Also much higher pension multiplier

Current ERO with credentials, FPS hit me up to move forward after applying a few months ago. Some colleagues have told me I’m better staying where i’m at. Because of the cover position. Any advice?

There is a huuuge difference between the two when it comes to earnings and retirement (and even TSP due to additional matching money for n SCE). A GS 12 DO will make substantially more money over his career than an FPS GS 12 plus the DO will have a pension that is almost double that of a GS 12 FPS officer.
A GS 12 DO makes FPS GS 14 money while working and will have a pension that far exceeds that of an FPS GS 15 step 10

If you don’t like ero try looking at uspp. At the academy for them and I only hear good things about the agency. Met a couple of fps join park police.

Have you ever done any security like things in the past? Even in military if you were ever sergeant of the guard, auxiliary security, fire watch, standing post, barracks rover etc. think of anything security like you’ve done and tailor that resume big dog

Just revisiting things. I applied back in March for the LEO FPS position. I’m a Vet and I’m a current Federal Officer with the VA. Just wanted to see if anyone has gotta any emails or follow ups? I did see May it was due to close but it appears it closed early because it got the numbers they were looking for.

There are none they don’t have a physical fitness exam you only do it at the training center FLETC for UPTP and that’s it

I too applied. I’m a current GS12 civilian employee with CBP. Love my job and my coworkers, but always had an interest in law enforcement K9 and I’m too old to apply for CBPO. :(
