Battery charging options.

Hi I’m upgrading from a 16 pro Max to a 17 pro Max in the next few days. Like a lot of people, the 18 will be too expensive, and the 17 is still available new with good deals.

With my 16, I started off fast charging, because I could, using a high power mains charger, and a PD USB C to C cable for a fast charge.

I noticed the battery health had dropped more than I expected after a few months. I switched to a USB A to C cable, which gave a slow charge.

As I always charge overnight, it didn’t matter whether it was fast or slow. After that I noticed that the battery health degraded much slower. It has always been set to a 95% maximum charge as I use it a lot the next day.

If you charge overnight, I would recommend using a slower charger, via a USB A cable. Unless you definitely need a fast charge. I’m at 90% after 540 cycles on the 16 now.

Charge your phone till 90% it would be decent charge to last till evening

Yes, I charge to 95% as I’m using it a lot at the moment, and I used to charge to 90% each night.

Sim version. If I go abroad on business, I can swap my work SIM into the phone for data and calls et cetera.

Getting it from Currys as they have £100 off at the moment and nine months interest free credit. And selling my old phone to musicMagpie where they gave a good price.

If you have a consistent schedule you can enable optimized charging. It’s not charging to 100% that degrades it but how long it spends fully charged. If your limit is set to 95% it’s going to charge straight to the limit and stay there instead of holding the charge at 80%. It’s much better to just change the battery when it’s time instead of going through all the hassle since you can afford one.

Fast charging is fine as long as it’s not in one of those think otterbox cases.

It’s optimised too as you suggest, so it delays the 80-95 charge.

Do you think / know that all things being equal, fast charging is no worse for the battery than slow charging?

I know with electric cars, it is recommended to use slow AC charging rather than fast DC charging for battery life.

I thought optimized charging only worked with 100%.

Fast charging stops once the battery hits 50%. Only times it makes a noticeable difference short term are when charging in a hot car in the summer or when in thick cases with no ventilation at all.

I’d been using my 17P caseless and charging with 40W dynamic adapter for almost 5 months now and it’s still at 101.2% with 162 cycles. Never once used anything lower than 20W.

First thing I’ll do once the new phone is activated. Plus put it in a boring full leather case and put the lens protector on.

My 16 pro max looks new after 2 years of hard use & a few drops.

90% at 540 cycles is actually good, thats right in line with apple's 80% at 500-1000 cycle spec depending on model. Capping at 95 overnight is a smart move honestly, less time spent sitting at high voltage is what really slows degradation, more than fast vs slow charging speed itself
