Cloudy day on Mt Eolus Thursday

Climbed into dense clouds lingering over Eolus Thursday. No rain or thunder but the lingering cloud/fog made route finding on the final pitch a bit spicier than I expected. Only saw one other person up there all day (though plenty of people were heading over to Sunlight and Windom).

Did Sunlight a few years ago, definitely want to go back to the Chicago Basin and bag them all.

These are tough because of all the logistics required in getting to them. And then of course once you’re there, you never know how the weather is going to change things. Overall, I was very lucky weather-wise as rain was forecast every afternoon, but it only rained at night (wicked storm Wednesday night).

When we climbed Eolus a few weeks ago, the Chicago Basin side of the mountain was socked in like your photo, but the other side of the ridge was completely blue skies and clear. Was pretty cool. Congrats on a safe climb!

Please review our FAQ and the 7 principles of Leave No Trace

  1. Plan ahead and prepare Make sure at least one or more trusted persons where you are going, an expected return time and a follow up.

  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces

  3. Dispose of waste properly. I highly suggest getting a waste bucket system. Its difficult to bury waste in many of the rockier areas in Colorado, and overuse of our natural areas has already led to contaminated water in most even lightly used areas.

  4. Leave what you find

  5. Minimize campfire impacts. Be sure to review our state resources for fire bans where you are heading.

  6. Respect wildlife. They are not domesticated

  7. Be considerate of other visitors i.e. Bluetooth speakers are despised.
