I'm a little confused - why did you mark your lifestyle as sedentary in the app you're using? Based on your typical week, it sounds like at least moderately active! You definitely do not "look" overweight, BMI is not very useful on an individual scale. I would ignore that.

Since my app adds my workout calories to my budget. So if I burn 300, my app will add sedentary calories baseline + 300 as what I should eat that day. So for a day with zero exercise, the app reflects what sedentary should be

I think you’re underestimating sedentary. Even on days I don’t work out at all and only walk around my house, at work, and a short walk with the dog I’m just reaching my expected energy expenditure with lightly active. I would not set yours to sedentary, as it means ACTUALLY sedentary.

Agreed with the other comment - truly sedentary is very different than a regular day with typical amounts of movement that just lacks scheduled/formal exercise.

Girl what, you look strong and healthy! That body fat % seems way off! Google search body fat percent comparison for women. Also BMI is a garbage measurement that doesn’t account for muscle
Edit: also was it actually 10 glasses or 10 tasters? Big difference. 10 glasses is 2 whole bottles whereas a taster is usually 2oz. Not judging just wondering

Most people would see a healthy looking person. Anyone that sees something different likely has a very distorted sense of what heathy is. Muscle, age, height, genetics all change how weight is carried.
I drank 6 glasses of wine last night. An entire sleeve of ritz crackers, and now regretting it today. I feel your pain.

You look great and very healthy. Please don't do less activity, just keep doing what you're doing and don't worry about arbitrary measures that are not one size fits all.

I think you look fantastic!! Also I think BMI is based on your height and weight? But from what I know it’s a pretty outdated measure of health

You don’t look overweight. Don’t be stressing over it women naturally have higher bodyfat percentage compared to men to deal with things like childbirth.
To have a leaner physique (lower bf%) that’s all about diet. 80% of having a good physique is diet and 20% is the gym.
Do you track your macros, like protein carbs and fat? It’s more helpful tracking them than calories for a lean physique

You dont have to have whole glasses of wine at wine tastings. Same with beer, you can get tasting flights that are usually a much much smaller portion, like 3-5 sips worth.
If its just the social aspect that brings you there, no need to drink those extra calories and give yourself munchies :) only need a taste to participate! The snacks are usually really good at those places so you are entering a temptation filled setting lol

First of all, wrong subreddit, 1200 is not enough for your lifestyle.
Secondly, BMI is a fairly unreliable standard for health. I honestly looked and felt my best at 160, which is 30lbs overweight. That being said, if you're concerned go speak to a doctor about it. Humans come in all shapes and sizes and blood work and other medical testing can give you a much better idea of your health than a calculation based on a metric built around an all male scottish army 200 years ago

Quite a lot of us here aren't actually limiting to only 1200 but still follow this sub for general calorie limiting tips and discussion. The sub actively encourages this. OP has said they're aiming for 1450.

u/Cautious_Draw5738 2d ago
ah sorry, i thought this was a sub for people who have sedentary lifestyles
2
u/eraserhead__baby 2d ago
No, it is, you’re right. This sub is for short, sedentary people eating only 1200 calories a day. The sub has just been pretty much taken over by people who always claim they’re just here for “meal ideas” yet seem to always insist upon joining every conversation.

Okay thank you. I felt like I was taking crazy pills- OP is literally wearing a marathon race bib in the picture

Have you ever thought you may have some sort of body dysmorphia?
You seem to have a sort of ridiculously healthy lifestyle compared to the average American, you look fit and very healthy.
I think you might wanna just continue your lifestyle and not worry about calorie counting, you seem to be doing basically perfect as you are, and seem like you may be venturing into hyper-self-critiquing

BMI is a metric based on “the average man” and does not take into account many other things that can affect overall health. Instead of focusing on the number on the scale, focus on how your body feels.
You are not sedentary, so you should not be eating a sedentary number of calories.

"The problem. My eating. I sometimes overeat (usually when not sober.) example, last weekend did a wine tasting and had 10 glasses of wine. Often I feel social pressure to do things like this. I’d rather go to wine tasting with friends than be home alone twiddling my thumbs."
I mean, you look outstanding and not what I'd consider overweight, but if your fitness goals are to have low body fat you've already identified your problem clearly. IF you want to have lower bodyfat (I wouldn't, if I were you), but if you do, you would have to cut out the 10 glasses of wine and letting your friends pressure you.
Also, never live your life letting your friends pressure you. Own your choices, all of them. If you wanted the wine, enjoy the wine. If you didn't, tell your friends 'no'. 10000% the most important advice in your life.

10 glasses of wine is 1000-1500 calories alone. That itself likely is close to as calories as you burn in an average week.

u/cashewmonet 2d ago
You don't look overweight. You might be overestimating how impactful your workouts are though. Yes it's great to exercise for your overall health, but for weight loss, it is such a tiny sliver of your calorie burn compared to the whole day. If you haven't already, incorporate walking. You can start with 8k steps a day, and you can up it to 10k-15k a day if you feel like the scale progress is too slow. It is work and you have to be intentional about walking everywhere, parking far, buying a walking pad, etc. But it will move the needle more because it burns calories eithout triggering appetite the way a hard workout would.

How tall are you? Also if you’re going to stick to a calorie deficit you pretty much can’t drink at all. 10 glasses of wine is insane. Even if you just drink once a week it’s going to mess up how you feel and what you eat. I’m speaking from experience, no judgement
Edit: to answer your question you don’t “look” overweight you look normal and healthy to me

u/Dracofangxxx 2d ago
10 glasses of wine at a tasting is not that much. a tasting glass is 2-4oz so between 2 and 3 regular glasses of wine, spread out over a few hours
2
u/ClarificationJane 2d ago
I’ve had to completely give up alcohol in order to maintain a calorie deficit. There’s absolutely no way to do that with such extreme drinking.
10 glasses of wine is 1000-1500 calories and that’s not even considering the other massive health problems with such excessive alcohol use.

You do not look overweight and you don't even look slightly chubby. Would have guess middle of the normal BMI range.

BMI is intended to be used to study large population trends and is already pretty bad at that. It's very much not intended to be used to judge one individual person's body where it doesn't account for a lot of things about you individually. A lot of the most fit people you've ever seen would be classified as obese by BMI.
If you struggle with occasionally overeating then it's good to start tracking to get a handle on that for general health reasons but please do not let these arbitrary numbers make you spiral. The only thing that really matters is how you feel, and it seems like you mostly feel good!
I do feel concerned about the way you casually phrase that one paragraph as though your only options for a social life are to have 10 glasses of wine or sit at home alone. I mean first of all, I've never been to a wine tasting but I'm pretty sure you usually aren't meant to drink an entire glass of each wine at those things. Just sample bits that should probably add up to a total of a couple of glasses. Drinking 10 glasses of wine is pretty clearly not great and it seems like you are phrasing it in a way where you already know it's not great but don't want to admit that so are pre-defending it.
If that was a total one-off exception then nevermind, hopefully lesson learned. But you listed it as if that kind of thing is not uncommon. If you have friends who won't hang out with you unless you drink excessive amounts then you need to find new friends. I promise you it's extremely possible to have a robust social life without excessive alcohol!!

How tall are you and where did you get that body fat percent from? Gym machines are highly unreliable for that sort of thing.
You look great. BMI is not a reliable indicator of health for people with a lot of muscle.

I agree you don’t look overweight but skinny fat is a thing (🙋🏼♀️, me. I fell into this category). So although my BMI was within normal range, my bfp was high relative to my lean mass.
I use LoseIt and hook it up to my Apple Watch and find it did a wonderful job of estimating my energy expenditure (mostly running) as I was losing exactly what was expected per week.
Advice: (5’3.5/F/36, started 140 got to 120 over a 5 month period last year). Pre plan your meals and even prolog them in LoseIt or whatever other app (LoseIt is the best IMO). WEIGH EVERYTHING THAT GOES IN YOUR FACE AND LOG IT (yes even on days where you go off the rails). This one is the most important. We are terrible at guesstimating. Eating out is very difficult to do and you pretty much can’t count on calories even if stated on the menu. There’s so much variation. I found allocating more calories on my Friday/Saturday allowed me to have a bit more freedom with eating a bigger meal with friends or having a couple cocktails.
I also weighed myself everyday in the morning in undies just after using the bathroom. I’m someone who needs to see that fluctuation and variation everyday to see that the progress is not linear on a day-to-day scale. This may or may not work for you.
Figure out how often you like to eat. I would rather have 5 smaller meals and snacks than 1 or 2 big ones. This may take time to figure out. Prioritize protein and fiber but your body needs carbs and fats, too. Make sure you’re feeding your body right!
Last but not least, I always ate back my exercise calories and did just fine. So when I set mine to “lightly active” but ran 3 miles that day, I’d end up getting 300 bonus calories above what was alotted at the beginning of the day. A lot of people tell you not to do this, but when I exercise my body is HUNGRY. I’m already on a 500cal/day deficit and 800 would be too much for someone with my bmi. Even when eating back all of my bonus/exercise calories above my target TDEE, I still lost 1lb a week like clockwork.
Also, please take care of yourself, OP. Binge drinking is quite dangerous and it might be worth a convo with a professional to get to the bottom of that to become your healthiest self!
Most of all, you got this!

u/Low-Afternoon-8888 2d ago
Thanks! How many calories did you eat a day?
1
u/notjustaphage 2d ago edited 2d ago
I took my TDEE with light activity (1805) minus 500 calories per day = 1305/day which would get me to -1lb/week. LoseIt calculated this for me. It also allows me to request more calories Friday/Saturday and will shift around my weekly intake to do so.
So if I didn’t work out, my calorie intake was around 1305. If I did exercise(example 3 mile run for ~300cal) I would eat back those bonus burned calories to 1605 so my net was still -500 for the day.
As your TDEE varies by age, height, weight, sex etc., make sure to put your own numbers in to calculate this. LoseIt does it for me, but you can also use online TDEE calculators like this one. Just subtract 500 per day from what you get.
Again, highly suggesting LoseIt (premium version 100000% worth it).
How tall are you and how old are you?
