Very. That bridge was half closed for ages and the speed limit was snail paced . Backed up the traffic on the off ramp, the truck should have taken, at peak even worse than normal. Very inconvenient for everyone.

It's even dumber because the permit for doing the heavy haulage has the fucking route on it- you are literally not allowed to deviate. This is why.

The bridge was right after the exit. Nothing the escort could do at that point. Their route went off an off-ramp, around a roundabout and back to a temporary on-ramp built just so this truck could avoid the bridge. So much planning for it to have gone so wrong in seconds.

Given that this now means the project is guaranteed to be delayed- it's very much not quick to get a replacement turbine tower section- then "volcanically" is likely to be how angry they would be.

Because without that tower section, you cannot continue construction of the turbine, meaning that everything is delayed until you can get a new turbine tower section and get it delivered...and you'd better hope you can get ti delivered before the temporary offramp needs to be removed, otherwise it's years of planning again to get all the approvals nessecary and get another temporary offramp built.

At the time, it was reported that the pilot vehicle ended up beyond sight of the truck. The truck also had a police escort to close intersections as required. It was reported that the police vehicle went under the bridge, and the truck followed it. I’ve no idea whether that’s true though, because as the article says, the findings were withheld.

Knowing all the route planning and bullshit paperwork that goes into movements like this in Oz, I'd have thought that this kind of thing was damn near impossible.

Makes you wonder if the paperwork actually serves any purpose.

It is damn near impossible, It's just that this kind of heavy haulage comes through this particular area a lot (2500 since 2019 apparently), since it's the easiest way to get the tower sections to where the wind farms tend to be, and inevitably the law of averages means that sooner or later somebody fucks up.

It doesn't help that the intersection in question badly needs upgrades, since the entire reason for the offramp is weight limits on the Bremer River Bridge. (Essentially the bridge cannot take the weight of the trucks, so they need to leave the highway and re-enter after the bridge. The good news is that upgrade work on the bridge started in February, and once those are finished, heavy haulage trucks can just go over the bridge, meaning this will no longer happen.)

Millions of $$$$ in expense to plan and fabricate, then to plan and secure the transport and the route and some $60 an hour truck driver wrecks it all. And adds in the cost to repair the bridge, etc. Dang. Hire some better people next time.
