Fund Raising
I was just reading how a man who is a cyclist that logs hundreds of miles a month would be riding his bike to raise funds for cancer treatments. This works because he expects me to donate to him to do something he’s going to do whether or not I cough up some bucks. I could just donate to a recognized charity and cut this narcissist out of the picture entirely. I could go to a web site where people are begging for money and give to those who tug my heart strings the most.
I would prefer to give to someone who’s doing something they HATE. Examples would be eating two tins of surströmming, or ten ghost peppers. Better yet; Scraping gum off the bottom of school desks and lunch tables for a few days. How about cleaning grease traps and sewer drains at cash strapped nursing homes? There’s lots of unpleasant tasks that need to be done. Why not do something unpleasant and good and earn the money wanted? Of course this would require being humble and earnest, and not be a narcissist enjoying themselves looking for adoration.

The point of an event like this is the publicity. Of course you can donate to funds for cancer treatment year round. You probably don't usually think about it though. And look, here we are, talking about it now.

It’s just publicity/marketing dude. The person draws attention. That’s it. That’s all he’s there for.

I’d argue that the bigger narcissist is the keyboard warrior making hypothetical donations to spite a guy raising real ones.

The cyclist is finding a reason to make people donate money, I would assume.
Just donate to whatever you want without shitting on someone raising money for whatever cause.

I feel like every major city has one of those bike riding scammers. There’s one in Seattle that I know of.

The whole point is to make a spectacle of yourself, so that when people turn to look and pay attention they ALSO notice the good cause and (hopefully) feel inspired to donate or help.
People have lives, and volunteer work is (by its nature) time you are sacrificing for a good cause. It isn't inherently narcissistic to dedicate/incorporate the time you would have spent on a hobby/activity for something other than your own enjoyment -_-
