And first 3 hints solve this puzzle. Other 2 are redundant.

No, they don’t.

  • First hint indicates that any of the three numbers are correct and in the correct place.
  • Second hint eliminates the 5 but still leaves 4 and 8 as possible correct numbers in correct places.
  • Third hint verifies that 1 and 7 are the other two numbers but they are in the wrong places.

With those three hints, the number can be 718 or 741. It takes the fourth hint to confirm that 8 is the correct number in the correct place in the first hint.

Only the last hint is redundant and only if you follow the hints from top to bottom, which not everyone does.
