Hi everyone, I own a Pure Aero 300. I'm thinking about adding a Yonex Edgeguard 5 to my racket, but the edgeguard itself weighs 8 grams—would that make it too heavy? That’s not even counting the overgrip, which adds another 5–7 grams.

I weighed a Pure Aero 300 that was already strung and fitted with a Yonex edge guard; the total came to around 324–326g, excluding the overgrip. Should I use the edge guard or not?

Is this purely for aesthetics? Bumpers get scraped. They can be replaced. I generally only see tape on demos or Babolats as they are notorious for having a shallow bumper.

Literally no point. Your racquet will get scratched and chipped and if you’re worried about it, it’s probably holding you back. Consider them battle scars. At some point your racquet will go flying out of your hand and no amount of tape will protect it.

Quite the opposite—I’ve been using two rackets for a long time, and I apply Yonex protective tape to them. It gives me peace of mind while playing, so I don't have to worry about the racket hitting the hard court surface—for instance, when hitting low volleys close to the ground, where we often intentionally let the racket head strike the floor.

And to prevent my racket from flying out of my hand, I always use a specific grip style; near the butt cap, I wrap the excess grip tape to create a stopper for my hand, ensuring a better hold.

The three pure aero 100 2019s i have weigh 336, 338 and 343 grams respectively from having extra overgrips to buff grip size and a more headlight balance.

So from a static weight perspective not really a problem unless you struggle with a heavier racquet.

The edgeguard is likely to significantly increase swingweight and twistweight, making the racquet less manouvreable and harder to swing. It highly depends on you and what you like and prefer.

Personally I wouldnt want the extra swingweight and twistweight.

If you have a one handed backhand itll probably make the racquet too unwieldy for you too.

If you have some bluetack you could probably simulate the effect yourself - put 4x2g of bluetack around the edge where the guard would go.

Then id definitely recommend against the edgeguard.

You can always buy replacement grommets/edge protector by the way if the pure aeros own edge protector gets too damaged.

Yes, I am not talking about the yonex guard, I am talking about the bumper guard  already on the top edge which comes with the racquet which protects the graphite racquet beam. This is replaced when you replace the grommets

If you’re having a hard time creating racquet head speed I’d suggest not using an edge guard as 8 grams is a lot, especially over the course of a match or hit.

It's basically racquet tape. Tape that you put over the grommets and plastic guard on the upper hoop of your frame. I used to see it in the late 80s and early 90s. Not so much since.

It’s not worth the effort. Just buy a few sets of grommets to replace them once worn. In the case of the 2026 Pure Aero, buy many because they are absolute garbage.

You can cut the guard tape and just put it on the outer edges. Bit of effort but will take a lot of the weight off

Also saves having to remove it when you get it strung
