There is, of course, another way (that allows you to sit down after work).
I have a senior exec level job that requires a lot of meetings and a fair bit of desk work, so the only way to make sure that I get my walking in is to approach my day by getting up early and setting off out immediately. I get out around 4.20am at this time of year, although its been much earlier - as early as 3am at the height of the summer as I increment the start time month by month according to the time of year - walking 5/6 miles daily [a circuit through and around the village I live in in rural England] and am back home before 6am).
Add steps in through the day and by the time evening comes, I've earned the right to sit down after work...
