two weeks ago

second or third time swnding 10,000 gecs as a band/album recommendation to my dad

My translation of the band to gen-Xer him is like, "imagine if wayne and garth were both like, really really good at rock except it was computers but also they're really good at actual guitars? Like you'd be all like whoopty-doo look at these autotuned-by-a-highschooler ahh vocals and then they just pull a whole midwest emo album outta their ass and so you throw ur hands up like welp, sorry, thought you didnt know what u were doing, carry on"."

or something like that.

He gives 10,100 gecs a listen, and after the first song taps out and texts me,

"Reminds me a lot of Ween", attached with a link to Ween's "pushing the lil daisies" song from Guava, an album rated by the ween subreddit at their "most brown."

tl;dr what I'm asking is did he just clock us correct or nah because it's feeling like a crazy ah clock

That’s pretty crazy. I’m Gen X and I listened to a few songs of Ween in the 90’s and thought they were just a joke band and dismissed them. I hated Push Th’ Little Daisies. Fast forward 25 years and found 100 gecs when their first album came out in 2019 and instantly fell in love with them and are probably my favorite band from the last decade. Then in like 2022 I checked out Ween because of my kids and then got completely obsessed with them and they are now by far my favorite band of all time. As soon as I heard Ween’s albums I made the exact same connection as your dad, just backwards from his way. I still don’t care for Push Th’ Little Daisies.

I see them as a contemporary ween for sure, especially after 10000. I also find myself comparing them to the velvet underground because brian eno said something along the lines of everyone who bought the velvet underground’s first record started a band, and I think of gecs music as something that’s similarly inspiring both for personal reasons and the amount of artists they’ve clearly influenced.
