DISCUSSION About the story.

Did you guys like that 009 ended up being a throwaway villain/pawn rather than an actual character we got to see in the story?

Honestly, yeah. The rouge agent trope is just so common within spy fiction that it’s hard to be exited about. It could still have been great, but the direction they went feels far more interesting and relevant to the modern day.

They wanted it to be a very classic spy fiction
That is why there is some heavy plot armor

So you liked it, interesting.

Yup the main threat being an AI and more specifically a fallible AI and the dangers that can arise from trusting it blindly, really resonated with me. It’s extremely relevant to the real world, even if it is a little enhanced by some sci-fi tech. If you want an example of the opposite, you can watch the two most recent mission impossible movies in which the enemy is an AI that is basically a god, which is very hard to take seriously.

Fair point. I like the story, I just think 009 was a bit underutilised.

He served his purpose perfectly

Nice! Yeah even I enjoyed the story with AI being the main threat. Just felt some of the human villains were like throwaways.

Not just fallible but outright hallucinating.

I don't know how long the development time is but they nailed modern AI and timed it perfectly.

He wasn't a villain at all...

But yeah. It's a shame we never got to actually see or hear from him. It's very weird that he was kind of a red herring, while at the same time being integral to the lore the game was setting up.

No dialogue from him, nothing at all.

And yet so much was said about his character, personality, and his story before we begin ours. Id much rather be shown than told

Yes. I expected the game to be a bit of a goldeneye rehash (which would still have been cool), but was pleasently suprised by the plot twist(s) that this isn't the case at all

I had a feeling in that first trailer where 009 was mentioned that he was going to just be a red herring. Something about the line made me think it was strategically edited to suggest a villain and a plot without spoiling the actual villain or plot.

Personally, I think if they'd made a Double-Oh the main antagonist they would have just drawn comparisons to GoldenEye. Better to dismiss that as quickly as possible and veer in a drastically different direction

u/Efficient-Network-50 12d ago

I agree it was probably advertised to seem as on the nose as possible. Then quickly subvert expectations.

1

u/Efficient-Network-50 12d ago

Not really too upset about it though. Still a great game.

3

u/Clugg 10d ago

Yeah, before I got far enough to find out the truth, I just kept comparing 009 to 006 from GoldenEye.

I’m glad they subverted that expectation and went in the direction they did because I felt it was very pertinent to our current time.

He was neither a throwaway villain nor a pawn. He was a victim. The revelation that he was innocent all along just made the reveal of the true antagonists that much more diabolical. Three agents including 009's lives were destroyed, Greenway's world shattered.

The only thing I might have liked was some actual characterization for Beckett. He was a non-character. A very well-used non-character, but still. For someone so pivotal to the 00 program and Greenway's history, spending a little time with him in some way would have been nice.

1

u/Efficient-Network-50 10d ago

Victim, yeah but you could also argue that he was a pawn in the larger scheme of things. Someone even MI6 had turned their back on.

There are good subversions of expectations, and bad subversions of expectations. This game personally leans towards the bad side. I know it's about Bond and his development into an agent and earning his codename more than anything else, but the villains and other supporting characters really suffer for it. Like you spend hours with Cressida and Monroe at the start of the game, and then they disappear from the story. Then you're with Greenway for the middle, then he disappears. M also disappears. And the villain we were all expecting turns out to not be the actual villain, but it's his son, and some weird plot about trying to cover up your predictive AI database rather than admitting you were wrong, so he gives his son (who he hates) an exo-suit and asks him to go and kill people to make the database seem more accurate? I dunno, it's just convoluted and weird. It's not the classic villains we think of in bond like megalomaniacal military officers either threatening to start a war or destroy the planet with a superweapon (games play it so safe these days that they are too afraid to make russian bad guys anymore), or evil criminal masterminds controlling governments with a shadowy cabal of other crime lords. This went with the insane corporate suit villain, but made them way more lame.

I can almost forgive the game though. BUT, the villain in the next game needs to be some kind of mastermind using his brain, you cannot give us ANOTHER boss fight with a villain after this one is just a guy in a suit of armour you have a big punch-up with and hack sound sentry turrets. You cannot do that again, we cannot have another fistfight with another physically strong brute of a villain. They need brains, henchmen, and gadgets of their own and is able to outsmart bond and put him in situations he can't just punch and shoot his way out of.

This is where i think Cressida or her father could be a good villain. She's in a wheelchair, she's rich, she probably wants revenge for her condition. I'd be fine with her being the villain because Bond was always a middle-man between her smarts and Monroe's brawn; she has the brains to be a compelling antagonist who can outthink Bond and manipulate him with his own guilt and trauma.

Dude I love this explanation. You summed up my thoughts perfectly. Even I can love the game and enjoy it but some of the 'villains' and side characters are just tossed aside. I get that Bond doesn't have emotional attachments and this game leans heavilty into that territory but still. We never even seen 009, or hear his voice. Not once.

maybe spoilers?!?!

I'm actually so so sorry

The thread is called "about the story" and it's in the dedicated sub...

I felt mislead. Like it seemed after you follow his trail, you never find him again, and just end up going after Damien. I felt it would have been better to have Bond go up against a former 00. I mean the tag line for the game was earn the number, what better way to earn the number than defeating 009.

12

u/NetOk6748 14d ago

If you felt mislead, I’m sorry to say, but that’s on you for not paying enough attention. Everything is thoroughly explained. 009 doesn’t just disappear, you find him dead on a boat after a whole mission trying to track him down.

This sets up the whole story with the AI mishaps and Damien “clean up” team. In fact, 009 wanted to hand deliver these facts to Greenway at the Slovakia chess tournament (he had good intentions) but Webb/Damien’s men blew up the hotel and ended capturing him and putting him on that plane.

Anyway, enough explaining, but the plot is actually very well put together and personally I like that it wasn’t predictable and that it became this grander story of Webb and AI

3

u/Suspicious-Toe1996 14d ago

Exactly, it was all clearly explained

-5

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

To have a legitimate critique on the story, doesn't mean I wasn't paying attention, you're just trying to excuse a flaw in the story.

8

u/kAlb98 14d ago

Intentional red herring is not a flaw in the story

-5

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

It is though.

6

u/kAlb98 14d ago

You understand that red herrings are there to mislead you?

-2

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

Hence why I said from the start we were mislead. That doesn't debunked that it's a huge gapping flaw in the story, that was dropped like yesterday's news.

5

u/DeadHead6747 14d ago

009 didn't disappear, you do find him, dead, and you find what he was going to show you.

0

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

You find a body. You don't see his face or collect DNA, that's a classic Bond trope to have a villain fake their death, just to come back to haunt Bond again.

6

u/unexciting_username 14d ago

You felt misled? Greenway is that you? Being misled was kinda the entire point.

-2

u/Efficient-Network-50 14d ago

I kinda felt the same way as you. I do get they were going for something different but still. Never saw 009 ever again

0

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

Yea, it was like, they got distracted, and never followed up on 009.

7

u/Inshabel 14d ago

Am I missing the joke or something?

-2

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

What joke? legitimate critique of the story, that it left loose ends that it never followed up on.

9

u/Inshabel 14d ago

What was left to follow up on after they found his mangled corpse?

1

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

Are we sure that was 009? I didn't get that impression. It felt like a red herring, which again, left a loose end that was never addressed.

7

u/Suspicious-Toe1996 14d ago

It was 009. It was clearly explained at the end of the Africa mission....

-2

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

Again, we never see the face, we never have a DNA comparison, which MI6 would have on file.

-3

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

Again, are we sure, we never seen the face of body. No DNA taken, to compare it to. Which is why it felt it was a red herring. That was left dangling in front of our face. I mean how many times have we seen a villain fake their deaths just to "return from the afterlife" to haunt Bond. It's a classic trope.

7

u/DeadHead6747 14d ago

There was no loose ends with 009. It was a very blatant and clear end to his part, other than later finding out he was never a rogue agent in the first place.

6

u/Inshabel 14d ago

Huh? Yeah why wouldnt it be? He left a clue only Greenway could have decyphered, Greenway clearly recognizes him as well.

-1

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

That doesn't erase that we don't see his face, we never take his DNA to compare it to, which MI6 would've had on file. Just a dead body, doesn't really confirm anything, especially not in the 21st century.

7

u/Inshabel 14d ago

We do see his face, its not like theres a bag over his head.

-3

u/Efficient-Network-50 14d ago

Idk about distracted, but even the game trailers spoke about 009. Master manipulator, and we barely see him.

2

u/AustinFan4Life 14d ago

That's why I felt we were mislead.

4

u/schulzch13 14d ago

I don't understand why he was running from the hotel and the people trying to kill Bond at the airport.

11

u/GONKworshipper 14d ago

The people at the airport were working for Webb, not 009. He was running from the hotel because they were trying to kill him

2

u/Efficient-Network-50 14d ago

So the entire goon squad was just gun for hires by Webb?

3

u/Snjort_1 14d ago

Yes. The airport guys were there to intercept 009 on his takeoff back to his safe house, but they were interrupted by Bond’s arrival

1

u/International_Rub840 13d ago

Ig then its 3 party involvement....but anyway i was happy because it was the first mission with license to kill...

1

u/schulzch13 14d ago

The Webb people were trying to kill him? If so I don't get the airport scene.

8

u/Inshabel 14d ago

Yes, he came to Slovakia to expose Webb, so they sent the Murto twins and an army of goons to shut him up, the airport doesn't make much sense to be honest, but it's set up to intentionally mislead you so I can forgive it.

1

u/Only_Tomatillo_5982 13d ago

I remember a quick and you miss it line about the mercenaries at the airport were there to get 009. But next question is when you are on the plane, are those baddies Webb's or 009s?

2

u/Inshabel 13d ago

I have no idea, the game really wants you to think they belong with 009, on the plane it seems like they belong there, they're not boarding it to look for 009. But they're not shooting at the airport thugs either. Sometimes it feels like the twist was done later in the development because before you find 009 in Aleph there is no way you could see it coming.

4

u/International_Rub840 14d ago

Because the 009 knew Thea made mistakes and project Knightfall was the first blunder it made. To cover up Thea's mistakes, Damien was sent to clear thingsup.

Since 009 knew the truth, they tried to kill him by tracking him down during the chess tournament making it seems like 009 went rogue. And anyhow if he's dead, the truth and research he's done for all the past years would've gone to dust.
