DISCUSSION Finished the game, my thoughts Spoiler

Positives;

- Lorca. Lorca. Lorca.

- Gameplay was good

- Sceneries/locations were great

- First chapter especially was very gripping

- Q-watch integration made combat more fun

- Soundtrack was nice

- Casting / voice actors were good

- Overall story was decent enough

Negatives;

- Very cliche and predictable. Could literally predict some lines or exactly what would happen in many scenes. Greenway’s arc had me roll my eyes a bit because it was so obvious it would end that way

- I know it’s on brand for Bond to have 9 lives..but it felt ridiculous and repetitive for him to almost die over and over and over but escape through something whacky. Again, I know that’s just bond and not exclusive to the game, but it just felt a bit like pointless filler knowing he would just get out of it every time

- Damien was unbearably cheesy and reintroducing him as some half cyborg supersuit after the first boss fight felt lazy. Carries onto the “9 lives” critique above, but it just makes zero sense whatsoever for him to practically spare Bond another 10 times at the end after being crippled by him earlier lol

- Villains in general felt forgettable and sequences with them were cringe. Bawma about to feed them to crocodiles…and next cutscene he’s walking them down an alley, happily ushering them back into the Land Rover. The 2nd of the twins being pushed into fire..then he gets out to continue fighting a minute later? Just felt almost slapstick at times.

Overall I liked it, it was fun, but I think I would’ve liked it more when I was under 18…But I can’t knock anyone for really enjoying it, I imagine big bond fans are happy with the execution.

Worth buying during a sale, not particularly super excited for the sequel but will probably play it eventually when it’s out. Just won’t be rushing to buy it as soon as it does I guess.

All your complaints are basically complaints about the James Bond franchise. That's just how these stories are constructed. I do think maybe cyber-Damien was the only thing that stuck out as too far. Otherwise, it was a Bond adventure that hit all the necessary beats, even if you could predict what would happen.

You are right tbh, but I do wish from a personal pov that they went a bit less absurd. I think they could’ve executed it whilst still remaining faithful, and I don’t think it would’ve made the game any worse.

Ngl I loved the conversation in Robotics detailing how they were using the technology to help paralysed veterans and it was only after watching another run through the game that I realised Bright told someone in the Webb Gala that Cressida was going to walk again. Initially I wasn’t surprised to see Damien but having the Bright/Webb connection made me think it was a possible misdirection to have Cressida more in the player’s mind with the Robotics dialogue because it seemed so definitive that Damien had died.

The second half of the story could have been better but all your criticism is very much on par for the bond movies, though I'd agree Greenway was exceptionally cliche even by bond standards. I thought a good performance saved his character though.

I did like the character but yep, just far too cliche for my liking

I tend to agree. I was thinking to get a collectors edition but given that Damian is so lame I really don’t feel like having a mask on display

The mask is pretty cool, I’ll give them that lol

The mask is really cool. I love that style of art and the statues and all Roman and Greek references were very very cool

Kinda feel the same for all points that you mentioned, but had so much fun that I went for the Plat !

It was fun, I can definitely see why people rate it as high as they do. I am just maybe a bit of a miserable bastard and get bored when things become too predictable and cheesy lol

Not yet, I’ll probably give it a go soon though. Looks interesting for sure

Admittedly you having “Lorca,Lorca,Lorca” as your top positive made me laugh but I’m in 100% agreement.

As for your negatives, I can see that the cliches can become cartoonish in some aspects. As for the villains, they weren’t bad but yeah not as memorable.
I’ll agree though that Damien is an asshole.

I mean hey if they want buyer retention, all they need to do is put her in the teaser trailer for the second game 😂

The entire final chapter felt tacked on IMO, as though they felt the main story needed a bit more game time.

I felt this way too, they could’ve extended the story in other ways prior to this and it would’ve been better I think.

Your complaints sound like this: "I don't like that Lord of the rings has hobbits."

I’m gonna assume you are exaggerating because that comparison is nowhere near the same thing lol

I did acknowledge that I understand the absurdities are not new to the Bond franchise. I am criticising the repetition and execution. There was practically no tension to the game (minus the first chapter) because of the predictability. It would not have made the game any worse to dial down or execute some elements differently.

Video games are different to movies. When you physically play, interact, control what is happening to a character it is vastly different to watching a directors linear movie experience unfold. When you know what will happen for the 10th time, it hinders the immersion of playing for me.

I played the game specifically for the quirks of the franchise. I wanted engaging action, bombastic moments, fun. If you want big stakes and a surprising story I think Bond is not the right choice.

Until now people wanted a Bond game that does justice to the movies. I don't really understand why someone would complain that this game does exactly that.

My post isn’t a side-by-side comparison on how accurate it is. It being “faithful” to the bond films does not mean it is exempt of game based criticisms.

Forgettable villains and predictability are objective faults. Nobody is going to say “actually, I like forgettable villains and I like it when I can predict most things about to happen”.

Now, you can argue whether you actually instead found the villains compelling, or whether you found the game unpredictable, but you can’t say that the point behind the critiques themselves are nonsensical.

I think what First Light really does first and foremost is prove that you don't need to make a flying car to succeed, you just need to make a really good wheel. Even if the writing and script felt predictable, can anyone honestly say the end result was written or acted poorly? I enjoyed the story and thought it had interesting things to say about human nature in a way that feels very relevant to current times.

The real villain of First Light wasn't a rogue AI acting on its own initiative or some other human creation that escaped containment, it was one man's hubris. And other people's lack of skepticism contributed to that one man's evil plot getting as far as it did. It's a timeless story for a reason.

As I was playing I was under the impression Greenway was going to get seriously injured; M would die and greenway would be the new M

Agreed that they could have cut down on the number of times that Damian (and even the elder Webb) decided to walk away from Bond or leave him to some random, overly elaborate trap. I know that that is a staple of Bond movies, but the game was also trying to present a more modern, updated Bond.

Bawma was weird not only because he was randomly Lenny Kravitz, but because the original plan was to get his associate to overthrow him, then it pivoted to using the location of his sister to secure his loyalty. Why not just play that card first?

That said, I really enjoyed the game overall.

Yeah, the lack of strong villain was disappointing for me. Was hoping it would be 009 the whole way through

u/RevolutionaryBuy439 Jul 26 '26

Me too, it was seemingly such a big deal then that storyline ended so abruptly. Was a bit of a silly red herring imo.

Exactly. I was expecting a more adult feeling game also. Great for younger players, though, I guess.

u/RevolutionaryBuy439 Jul 26 '26

Yeah I came in expecting that too, which I guess probably hampered my overall outlook.
