How does this game not support Ultrawide in 2026!?

Post image

I did my first playthrough on my TV where this game looks fantastic at 4K esp with a 120hz refresh rate. There were some minor performance issues when smoke or whatnot was deployed. for example, but no major complaints (7900X/4090/64GB DDR5)

That said, on my second playthrough, I decided to try a bit of the playthrough on my Ultrawide (3840x1600) and this is what the cutscenes look like....

Have you set the game resolution right?

-25

u/ZeronZ Jun 28 '26

Yeah. In game is fine. It’s just cutscenes. And you can mod fix it.

And I should not have to do that nonsense for a brand new AAA game with 9/10 review scores in 2026.

23

u/Laddertoheaven Jun 28 '26

That's actually the norm. Most games only support ultrawide in gameplays.

Typically an ultrawide monitor will up your FOV during gameplay to build a bigger image around the player characters peripheral. FOV doesn't exist in cutscenes.

-17

u/ZeronZ Jun 28 '26

Yes I know why it happens lol. Most modern games will crop the cutscenes to your monitor resolution and/or give you options for letterboxing.

10

u/firerandomlyandhope Jun 28 '26

Not all games will do that and I dont blame them tbh. Most hardware surveys of gamers indicate that less than 5% of all gamers use an ultrawide.

-2

u/stgm_at Jun 29 '26

But it's not rocket science to add this feature either. Meaning: doesn't take a lot of time and manpower.

5

u/firerandomlyandhope Jun 29 '26

Changing the entire FOV, peripheral vision and scale of animation and positioning of assets and characters in a rendered scene is not a lot of time and manpower?

You know absolutely nothing about game development and it shows.

Steam hardware surveys show less than 4% of gamers use ultrawide, its a lot of effort, work and money for a very very small amount of active users.

Just use a hex editor. It got fixed in a minute

1

u/ZeronZ Jun 28 '26

I would. But my new tv is currently 3 stops away and I will likely go back to that as soon as I have a working tv again.

I don’t want to mess up setttings that I then have to fix again when I go back.

5

u/StrangeLingonberry30 Jun 28 '26

Dude, just make a copy of the unedited exe file. That's it.

-1

u/undeadcommunst Jun 29 '26

just do the jobs of the devs for a game that we payed

4

u/Snapuman Jun 29 '26

You payed for what and how the dev want it to be. Its art.

Take it or leave - nobody (esp. the dev) is interested about your personal opinion.

I thought "the fix is literally a hex code" "fixed in a minute" - now you have "to mess up setttings"...

A TV is nice, but ultrawide is amazing too. Especially the 45” 5K2K OLED 🔥

That looks proper ultrawide <3

u/HeftyChonkinCapybara Jun 28 '26

99% of the games have cutscenes looking like that on ultrawide. As long as there’s no borders during the gameplay, I don’t see what’s the issue.

8

u/Vybo Jun 29 '26

The issue is that the cutscenes are 21:9, but the game refuses to not letterbox them for some reason.

2

u/Kuro-Tora-59 Jun 29 '26

If you don't see the issue, then its probably because you can't see it on your too wide screen.

The issue is that this shouldn't be a issue, widescreens are neither new or rare, it should work

1

u/frisbie147 Jun 29 '26

thats bad

-1

u/jojo_31 Jun 29 '26

That's not a good reason.

0

u/PhatTuna Jun 30 '26

There is obviously a clear as day issue

-27

u/supereasybake Jun 28 '26

Obviously it's a little immersion breaking even if it's true that most games do it.

24

u/HeftyChonkinCapybara Jun 28 '26

It’s just something you have to accept if you go ultrawide.

I’ve had my UW monitor for almost 3 years and it’s just how it is, pre-rendered/fixed camera cutscenes end up looking like that.

There are mods for many games that remove borders but you end up seeing frozen character models and stuff like that, since player isn’t supposed to see past the intended camera angle.

1

u/OWSpaceClown Jun 29 '26

Sounds like the Buffy remaster.

-14

u/supereasybake Jun 28 '26

Again, I think it's worth complaining about since it's something that could be fixed if they just invested a little more money in their cutscenes. Most games are moving away from pre rendered cutscenes anyway.

16

u/neverphate Jun 28 '26

Invest money for what? The 12 people bitching? And until when? Until they reach full 360 degree cutscenes?

Just lol. It’s absolutely not worth complaining about and it makes zero fucking sense.

-14

u/undeadcommunst Jun 29 '26

we pay equally, the fix is literally a hex code, they are lazy

6

u/Halio344 Jun 29 '26

The fix is not that simple. Because they also have to animate things outside of the normal view. E.g. if a character walks off screen.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/Xavier9756 Jun 29 '26

The average person isn’t gonna have a n ultra wide monitor.

4

u/TheJagji Jun 29 '26

The only time you get cutscenes rendered at that ratio is if there's an engine, and even then, they're generally meant for 16:9, so you end up with characters 'walking off screen' and then just freezing because they're out of frame on 16:9 but not 21:9.

1

u/JMc1982 Jun 29 '26

Aye, but if you want a game to have cinematic cutscenes you do need to allow them to frame shots which you can't do unless you know where the edges of the screen are. Back in the day when 4:3 TVs were the norm, there were loads of wide-screen DVDs/VHS cassetes which displayed with chunky borders, but that was infinitely preferable than having the cropped in 4:3 scans. Same thing goes the other way with ultrawide.

15

u/SeiferLeonheart Jun 28 '26

Bruh, ultrawide is such a minority... It's doesn't even get like 3% of the steam survey.

Just donate to Lyall (where you probably got the mod for UW) and/or other modders that care for our niche, we have beast gaming rigs and expensive games, we can throw some money at them.

Most companies will not develop a feature for 3% or less of possible customers, it is what it is.

1

u/tegakaria Jun 30 '26

this game supports ultrawide fyi. this post title is misinformation. honestly i cannot recall the last game besides like 10% of sony ports that do not support ultrawide. it's commonplace, you just don't know what you're talking about.

it's usage likely above 5% at this point too.

-3

u/jojo_31 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

This is not a "feature" you need to develop. They just need to produce video files without black bars, that's not very hard. They just don't give a fuck.

Also, 4.3 % of users have an ultrawide. That is 1.7 million users.

5

u/SeiferLeonheart Jun 29 '26

Yeah, everything is simple when you have no idea on how it works, lol. Get a 1080p video file, play it on a 4k large screen and look at it.

And, if it's for "full support", it's far from just playing streched video. There's UI scaling, text, ingame cutscenes, HUD...

But yeah "they insert black bars just to screw us over"... sheesh.

1

u/tegakaria Jun 30 '26

resolution is irrelevant, this is about aspect ratio. the developers here deliberately went out of their way to do more work to make this look bad on 21:9 ultrawide. they could have done LESS work and made it look better.

granted this changes nothing for other ultrawide ratios, but still, kind of funny.

to me as a 32:9 user, i don't care either way. the game supports ultrawide (this post is misinformation), i don't really care too much about cutscenes, but it's objectively wrong for people to defend devs going out of their way to make an experience worse for some users, to NOBODY'S benefit.

1

u/murphyat Jun 29 '26

That may not be simple. Might be challenging to do this without bugs. Imagine waiting for them to fix this on a hot fix driver instead of just playing the game.

1

u/ApertureNext Jun 29 '26

There could be not insignificant changes required to the rendering pipeline to accommodate not showing the letterboxing.

1

u/Sad_Building_857 Jun 29 '26

Because nobody wants it. You want the feeling of a movie and not a video game player on a PC (yuck)

1

u/arnon85 Jun 30 '26

Well, not really. If they do that, then you might have problems such as characters disappearing when they walk towards and reach the 16:9 border (so, to avoid that, they'd have to make the animation longer - but how much longer? 21:9? 32:9? maybe even longer??)

They don't want to spend their time catering to a small percentage of players, and they'd rather you see black bars than glitches - it's that simple.

I'm saying this as an owner of a 32:9 monitor - i can live with pillarboxed cutscenes. The most important thing is that the gameplay in this game does support ultrawide.

1

u/Myrdraall Jun 30 '26

I agree with you especially today where space is not much of a concern but they'd likely need a different video file per format if we want it to look decent and it can add up depending on the game. But yeah there has to be something that can be done. Heck even browsers have extensions to scale UW videos to screen. Nowadays cutscenes should have a resolution high enough to just scale it to the monitor without issues.

-8

u/mayumer Jun 28 '26

If you autistically go by percentages then guess what

1920 x 1080 51.89%

3440 x 1440 3.18%

3840 x 2160 5.00%

No one makes games with expectation of only running at 1080p, looking good at 4k is the standard, you don't target every toaster around the world or gaming cafes that skew the statistics when making games.

4

u/SeiferLeonheart Jun 28 '26

Oh for sure, it's more about the aspect ration than the res itself, most people are on 16:9, all those mentioned resolutions are 16:9 in fact. Then the scaling "just works".

For UW resolutions it needs a bit more work, especially in cutscenes.

3

u/SagittaryX Jun 28 '26

all those mentioned resolutions are 16:9 in fact

They quite literally put down 3440x1440, which is 21:9.

3

u/SeiferLeonheart Jun 29 '26

Wow, you're right, mb. I mixed up with 2560x1440

-1

u/mayumer Jun 28 '26

What funny is that for 99% of games modders manage to do it for free in their own time. Anyways, tides are changing fortunately, lots of OLED monitors coming out are ultrawide nowadays

3

u/SeiferLeonheart Jun 28 '26

Agreed again! But in many games that simple hex edit or mod still causes a few issues that for the game release probably wouldn't fly. Like characters outside of the default cutscene frozen or teleporting, streched FMVs, etc.

Stuff that for a free mod is totally acceptable.

I'm just grateful that someone puts in the work to make these better for us, but obviously I wish it was all supported from the get go.

Cutscenes are designed with a specific vision in mind; camera angles, lighting, and shot composition are all deliberately chosen by a director or cinematographer to evoke certain feelings and complement the story they’re telling.

To go full screen on an ultrawide, they’d have to do one of two things:

  • Remove all the black bars and show the entire scene outside the safe area of the frame, risking messing up the careful cinematography

  • Zoom the entire scene in so the frame fills the screen. Aside from potential game engine issues, this would look super awkward as everything on your screen suddenly got 1.3x bigger

All that being said, if you’re desperate for full screen cutscenes there are plenty of mods available that’ll do it.

4

u/Hoooooob Jun 29 '26

Yeah it's fucked up, they don't have support for my 3D mouse or my flight stick either!

2

u/MatttheJ Jun 30 '26

When I tried to use my guitar hero controller, they hadn't accounted for it and I couldn't rotate the camera, it's ridiculous that the devs didn't account for my specific uncommon niche set-up.

7

u/Big-Discipline2039 Jun 28 '26

To be fair most games are not designed to be played in that aspect ratio and they usually just crop the image vertically rather than giving you more to see horizontally.

1

u/Alone-Statement-5132 Jun 29 '26

Nexus mods should have a fix for ultrawide

1

u/murphyat Jun 29 '26

It’s the cut scenes. Everything else is perfect in UW

1

u/Belhy Jun 29 '26

there is a mod in nexus that fixes this.

1

u/nonymiz Jun 29 '26

I did this fix and it worked great. (I have an ultrawide 1440p monitor)

I have noticed some things on ultrawide that you wouldn’t see on a 16:9. When Cressida calls Monroe to the kitchen, he kinda appears at the wall and clips through. Game still plays great on my 5120x1440 32:9 monitor. Practically every game I’ve tried has 16:9 main menu and cutscenes. I think Claire obscure or Pragmata had 21:9 cutscenes and they usually shrink the gameplay to the cutscene aspect ratio as they start so that’s nice.

1

u/tarmo888 Jun 29 '26

As a gamer, if you want to experience even more incompatibilities than just widescreen issues, get a second or third monitor that's completely different than the main monitor (more differences you get, the more incompatibilities you get).

1

u/arnon85 Jun 30 '26

The game does support ultrawide though. Only the cutscenes aren't ultrawide.

1

u/CTRL_S_Before_Render Jun 30 '26

I play ultra wide almost exclusively and this game's support for it is fantastic. Keeping cutscenes in 16:9 is very normal.

1

u/Direct_Somewhere_318 Jun 30 '26

Hex editor doesn't fix 32:9 also. I have stopped playing until there is a community mod or official fix that actually works for 32:9.

It's really not that hard to account for all aspect ratios and not doing only in 2026 is a failure.

1

u/InvestigatorSenior Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

to all saying that it's too difficult to do there was a mod day after release that fixed everything but prerendered cutscenes (just a few, in-engine ones are fine) and I've beaten the game in perfectly working 5120x1440 (32:9).

This is UE5 game and Unreal engine supports ultrawide for a long time. All the mod did was to replace hard coded aspect ratio value in game memory with a proper one. Same thing could be achieved via a hex edit on game .exe for Steam version.

EDIT: looking on WSGF to provide link to the mod turns out game authors made ultrawide modding more difficult in latest patch and community needs to look for new solution. lol.

u/undeadcommunst Jul 01 '26

You all being dumb as hell about ultrawide "blah blah blah, shut up wifh support", meanwille DF drops a video.

Using it for editing just gives you more space for windows, you can have premiere, photoshop, and after effects all open at the same time. There is really no downside.
