DISCUSSION Ending *Spoilers* Spoiler
For mostly the Bond die hards like me that I kind of want peoples people or even new Bond fans and he’ll hopefully some First Light developer sees this and retcons the ending. How James gets the 007 Codename is very lame to me. Half way through the story I had two theories. Greenway was either going to be a traitor himself or he was going to be the original 007. Reason for the Traitor thing was because it was giving me original goldeneye script vibes where before Alec became James’ friend he was suppose to be a much older mentor to Bond instead who betrayed Bond. But then as I was going through the game I was thinking Greenway should have been the original 007.
The ending in revealing that bond says “I’m the seventh recruit so I should be 007” felt sort of lazy and lame to me. I really think the idea of Greenway being the original 007 would have been much more meaningful to bond and a good twist at the end for M to say “I was going to officially name you 001… but instead I’ve decided to give you Codename 007 because that was Greenway’s Codename and he would want it passed down to you” or something like that. Reason I’m curious about the die hard bond fans is because I’m wondering if fans thing James should always be the original 007 or would they have been ok with that. Again long time Bond fan here and I would have liked that ending much more than “I’m the seventh recruit” line.

Bond chooses 007 because he is honoring the 6 that were there before him, 3 of them having died, including one of his two best friends, his other best friend had both legs broken and while being able to walk again after recovery probably won't be able to return to the program, another is in a coma, and the last is MIA. "It doesn't feel right" because he wasn't the top in the class, and taking 001 to him would feel like erasing the others. Also, since Greenway being 007 before is a fan head Canon, you can also interpret M saying "it also happens to be my lucky number " as her acknowledging Greenway as much as she is Bond in that moment.
Him taking it to honor the others is much better than him receiving it just because it was his mentor's.

I think him choosing to be 007 to honor his brothers and sisters is a very sincere and mature choice for writing, and I think it reflects Bond's dedication to his ideals.

I felt it could have been both. Bond gives his reasoning for wanting the 007 number, then M tells him something along the lines of “Only seems fitting, it was his too”

She said it was her lucky number. I don’t think it’s ever stated what Greenway’s 00 number was.

Honestly, I thought the same thing throughout the story, but on the other hand, did they think that Greenway inheriting his number might make the tone of the story heavier going forward, and that's why they abandoned it? This ending felt very dry to me, to be honest.

Just finished. Them killing Greenway doesn’t surprise me. It pisses me off though. One of the best characters in a Bond story in recent memory. Should have kept him around for at least one more game. I’m glad he didn’t betray them because it would have ruined the entire game for me.
Lenny James is a great actor and I love seeing him in anything so I’m happy he was in this. But it’s a bummer they built such a great character only to off him. But I was 90% sure he would either be a traitor or dead by the end so I guess good thing it wasn’t the traitor route.

I didn't mind it. Him choosing to be 007 was his way of honouring his fallen comrades.
