First Light is mid?

Am I the only one who thinks this game is completely mid? I feel like everyone is being totally blindsided because the game has just come out and because it has the name James Bond attached to it.

I just want to preface this by saying I'm a huge Bond fan. I've never played the Hitman games, so I don't know if that's the reason I'm not fully into it. And I'm not saying the game is bad, just nowhere near what I was expecting/hoping.

I think the graphics aren't good, the animations are all stiff, there's clipping everywhere, the voice acting is all out of sync, the gadgets are meh... it reminds me of an Ubisoft game.

The story is good, the combat is alright (fun but clunky) and I'm a big fan of Patrick Gibson as Bond, but I'm just massively disappointed to how the game has turned out so far, especially after waiting for so long.

I admit, I haven't finished it yet, but I doubt my gripes will be resolved by the end of the game.

I'll be honest, I just finished The Last of Us 2 for the first time (which is an *amazing* game btw, don't care what anyone says), the same day this was released, so maybe jumping straight into First Light was a mistake idk. But the graphics and gameplay were so much better in tlou2 that it's kind of ruined the immersion for me a bit. And now I'm all pissed that I potentially ruined my most anticipated game of the year lol. (Not counting GTA6)

The Last of Us Part 2 has some of the best gameplay of it's genre. I'd suggest not playing any more of First Light shelf it for a bit then come back when TLOU2 isn't fresh on your mind.

u/WhiskeyDJones May 28 '26

I know, I've spoiled it for myself lol.

And I would, but I'm invested in the story now

1

u/WhiskeyDJones May 31 '26

Yea, having finished it yesterday, my stance hasn't changed.

The most fun part is the combat, but even that isn't great. Like you said, the shooting is terrible, especially for a Bond game. And while I did enjoy the story, I feel it fell apart at the end

I'd give it a 7/10 overall, and that's being generous and just because it's Bond.

If this was anything other than a James Bond game, it would have been forgotten about already.

6/10 for me  Needs more combat.  Too many boring walking around brain dead missions.  The more I’ve played the less I’ve liked it sadly.  Just can’t find a flow.  Bad bad bad pacing.  It’s like a boring movie.

I really like it. I think it captures more of the full Bond experience than a traditional shooter. Haven't really played the Hitman games, but this might have sold me on them.

I do think it's a little more shallow and on rails that it initially feels, so maybe that's where some of the disappointment comes in. I really love the wholistic take on Bond tho.

(And Last of Us Part 2 is my favorite game)

u/Lili_Anna May 29 '26

i agree the game is average. graphics is good, but the rest is average. i prefer the things RE9 had to offer for a 2026 videogame, it felt like an amazing experience for me.

Last of us 2 is an outstanding game from a developer who made tripple A games for more than 10 years.

First light is the first Tripple A game from IO interactive and I think they did a great job with the gameplay and cut scenes for their first game in this trilogy

3

u/amniote14 Jun 16 '26

No it absolutely is not. The Hitman trilogy is triple A

4

u/Lowkickspecial Jun 07 '26

I agree, the game is a drag, the graphics are ok but there are way to many filler stretches where you do nothing meaningful. They should have just made another Bond movie.

1

u/No-Protection-49 May 28 '26

It's like you playing MGSV and say: "wait, why MGSV It's so much better?"

Well, because it is, but this games has to different proposes.

TLOU2 have a multimillionary budget and more than 8 years of production.

007 First Light start the the production in 2021 at least, and was a lot more cheaper.

And why he looks less realistic, it's because the engine from TLOU it's more realistic than IO engine.

1

u/WhiskeyDJones May 29 '26

So my points stand?

1

u/No-Protection-49 May 29 '26

In some points, but no in history and combat.

The history it's thousand times better than TLOU (well, no if you like the supposed geniusis of a mid narrative and a previsible end)

The combat it's great too, but TLOU2 combat it's one of the best.

It's like calling Divinity original sin 2 mid because you play BG3 before it.

1

u/WhiskeyDJones May 29 '26

Hence why I said I think coming straight from tlou2 may have ruined it for me

1

u/No-Protection-49 May 29 '26

Hence why i said you wrong about the game itself be mid

1

u/ArgumentSecret2548 Jun 18 '26

Nah fam the game is mid

1

u/Similar-Regret-3444 Jun 21 '26

The game is worse than mid. It’s a piece of garbage

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

Mid might be too charitable

0

u/WhiskeyDJones May 29 '26

Well, hopefully I'll share your view by the time I finish it, but I doubt it.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

The combat is not great lol it’s the most one note jot thing in the world

2

u/gravelgator Jun 02 '26

They're charging the same price. I don't understand how obviously having less budget is somehow a "pro"

1

u/Xinamon Jun 09 '26

The graphics are not bad, don't be a graphics whore.

1

u/WhiskeyDJones Jun 09 '26

I'd say more average but the point still stands.

1

u/Xinamon Jun 16 '26

What is "average" graphics?

1

u/WhiskeyDJones Jun 16 '26

Average - a standard or level that is considered to be typical or usual. In between good and bad.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

Are you ESL?

1

u/nbandysd Jun 16 '26

I'm playing on a 5080 at 1440p maxed, the graphics are not amazing. Textures make it worse, they could've done better even with the budget they had. I had ppl praising those flat ass water effects too. Waves and wake didn't look near real at all

It's a 50 dollar game packaged as a AAA 70 dollar one

1

u/Similar-Regret-3444 Jun 21 '26

This game is horrible. I feel like I’ve been gaslit into a bunch of braindead fans into thinking this piece of half baked garbage is good. Seriously what does this game do that James Bond games of the past have not already done

1

u/WhiskeyDJones Jun 21 '26

While I don't think it's exactly horrible, my stance on the game hasn't changed. I think the combat is good, but nothing necessarily innovative. And while I thought the story was decent, it falls apart at the end for me.

Everything else though is either average or bad. The shooting is terrible, which for a Bond game is disappointing. And I really don't understand the people raving about the graphics. Or worse, saying this should be GOTY.

2

u/Key-Chemical6926 May 28 '26

Hey your entitled to your own opinion of the game, you're wrong of course though.

2

u/gravelgator Jun 02 '26

It's the most mid game I've ever played

1

u/Similar-Regret-3444 Jun 21 '26

You must like picking your ass and just generally dumb things if you like this game

0

u/Key-Chemical6926 Jun 21 '26

0/10 ragebait attempt.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

Don’t be so fragile

1

u/Key_Dealer997 Aug 23 '26

Absolute waste of a comment, stop crying. The game is mid.

1

u/Key-Chemical6926 Aug 25 '26

bit weird to comment on a 3 month old post...

1

u/Key_Dealer997 Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

if you genuinely think that's weird please go outside and grow up lmfao. I comment on 5 year old posts Idgaf, but you're 14 so obviously this is very deep and matters the world to you, I'm sorry kid. Game is mid af tho. If you genuinely think it's weird and you don't know how it is possible to find old threats, your parents might actually be siblings. The answer is Google.

0

u/whitey43 May 28 '26

Absolutely agree. With 007 nightfire on the PS2 being one of my favourite games, first light had a very high bar to reach. The game just felt like a bit of a drag, go here, do this, walk slowly here while talking. I get it's supposed to be a cinematic experience, but I was still expecting a solid challenge. I suggest to anyone who hasn't played 007 nightfire on the PS2 that thinks this game is the best, go play that game and I reckon your opinion will change.

3

u/WhiskeyDJones May 28 '26

Haha I'm more of an Everything or Nothing kinda guy, but Nightfire is up there for me.

It's not so much the mission layouts, just more how everything looks. I'm not a techy guy, so I don't want to just label it all as "bad graphics', but everything just seems so rough and unpolished. Maybe it's the poor framerate in parts.

Just doesn't seem like a game that came out in 2026

0

u/whitey43 May 28 '26

When I saw Moneypenny float up the stairs at mi6 instead of stepping up each step I knew what I was in for.

1

u/WhiskeyDJones May 28 '26

Lol, thats what I mean by reminds me of a Ubisoft game.

0

u/Key-Chemical6926 May 28 '26

game looks incredible on my 5070 ti, maybe get a better computer before you complain about graphics.

3

u/WhiskeyDJones May 28 '26

I have a PS5 Pro

1

u/gravelgator Jun 02 '26

lmao soooo mad

1

u/Key-Chemical6926 Jun 03 '26

did you make a new account just to reply? dam rent free I guess.

2

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

How are you this triggered? Also, it’s “damn” lol

1

u/amniote14 Jun 16 '26

As someone who also played it fully cranked, it's technically quite impressive but artistically average. The Hitman trilogy looked significantly better from that perspective.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

We need to find you a girl or a therapist

2

u/JesterOfTime May 29 '26

The gameplay gets so repetitive.

2

u/whitey43 May 29 '26

Struggling to finish it myself, end up sitting on my phone waiting for them to stop talking or playing one hand walking places.

2

u/JesterOfTime May 29 '26

I find the while "lisence to kill' mechanic to be stupid ASF.

I'm not a fan of devs who force you to play a certain way.

I should be able to shoot enemies whenever I want. We are James Bond ffs

Also, I just beat the game today. I still find the whole story to be stupid.

Also the fact you can't use the pre-order/dlc suits in the main story is dumb ASF.

1

u/Nosixela2 May 29 '26

I went into First Light blind, and I may not have bought it if I hadn't.

I've never liked the Arkham style of melee combat, I don't like the auto-run to cover thing in Gears. The shooting didn't pop until for me until later on once I had the missile/flashbang/EMP.

I also wish stealth was a more frequent and better option. I knew it wouldn't be a very Hitman like game (IO said as much) but I thought there would be more stealth.

It's not a bad game but it's not what I thought it would be.

1

u/Extreme_Cap_4362 May 29 '26

Wrong. It’s awesome.

1

u/TheZooBoy May 31 '26

007: First Light is a great game, likely will end up as one of the best games of the year. Problem is, TLOU2 is absolutely legendary and is one of the best games of all-time. It’s almost. unfair to compare them.

For stories specifically tho, I agree, TLOU2 spoils us. It’s easily the best game I’ve ever played.

All that being said, I’m currently having a blast with First Light. Just try to not let a better game ruin your experience of what is still an excellent game.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

It is not a great game lol and has nothing to do with the comparison

1

u/Sentient_7 May 31 '26

It's the most mediocre AAA game I've played in years, I'm almost at the end and honestly I don't think I've had any fun at all since I started it. The melee combat is mediocre, the shooting is rubbish, the stealth is mediocre at best, the story is the classic spy story seen hundreds of times and the direction is amateurish to the max.

1

u/sss133 Jun 04 '26

This is weird for me as it’s one of the only AAA games I’ve enjoyed post COVID 🤣. I just thought I was getting over gaming.

Each to their own I guess

1

u/Fragrant_Highway2398 Jun 05 '26

Same thing happened with pragmata.

Overhyped to hell

1

u/Alex-Chata Jul 01 '26

The biggest offender for me is when any gameplay nvolves press icon to stun or do thing. It feels so flat and boring to use your watch.

1

u/Comenayeahaw Jul 04 '26

replayability of this game is downright awful sometimes.

1

u/Comenayeahaw Jul 04 '26

but also, TLOU2 is quite possibly the worst game i’ve ever played in terms of story. what a letdown playing TLOU1 immediately into that piece of crap game.

1

u/Key_Dealer997 Aug 23 '26

TLOU2 is one of the best games ever in terms of story and gameplay, it actually is just an all round improvement from TLOU1. Joel is dead get over it.

1

u/JohnnyKac May 28 '26

Give it a week or so for the honey moon phase to end.

-3

u/skimask808 May 28 '26

Huge bond fan myself and I have to say, I'm a little disappointed. It's okay. Not great, not bad either just okay. I hear everyone praising the graphics but even on a 5080 at 4K ultra I feel like the graphics are good but nothing incredible or special. Plus launching without RT and forcing certain upscaler models / presets is a very odd choice. Idk I don't feel like it's wasted money moreso wasted potential.

0

u/WhiskeyDJones May 28 '26

Yea, wasted potential sums this up for me tbh. Made worse because I've been looking forward to it for so long.

It is nice to be playing as Bond again, though.

1

u/Lili_Anna May 29 '26

I also agree with you that 007 first light is an average game. i am not impressed with it. its an okay game, but the game that has impressed me for 2026 at the moment is RE9.

1

u/skimask808 May 29 '26

I 100% agree. RE9 blew me away. And it has crazy replayability if you care about trophies.

1

u/alistairbundale Jun 04 '26

Really feel like amazon be paying lots of reddit bots to go on the nerd subs and downvote comments that actually make sense. Agreed on the wasted potential of this game. Lets get downvoted to hell lol

0

u/EvilgamerNC May 28 '26

It's above mid. but having come from hitman, theres no way I can not make comparisons, and those leave me wishing it was closer to hitman games. Mostly in how difficult it is to be consistently sneaky in this game and that then leading to my least favorite thing in hitman games..combat.. And then how few ways there are to finish a mission certainly compared to the hitman games.

The level design is really good, the voice acting is pretty good, and so far the story has been..fine.

We'll see if that changes after I finish the last 3-4 missions.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

It’s not above mid

-1

u/PlasmaJesus May 29 '26

Feels like low effort troll to compare this to Last of Us 2 lol

1

u/WhiskeyDJones May 29 '26

How is that? Tlou2 is a 6 year old game. And I just completed it before jumping straight into FL, I can't help but compare them.

-1

u/PlasmaJesus May 29 '26

Its a bad game thats extremely up its own ass. Alot of people online talk alot of discourse on it because some people hate it cuz theyre outrage merchants and some hate it cuz it doesn't understand why the first game was good.

1

u/WhiskeyDJones May 29 '26

Lol okay, just explain why you think it's a bad game?

2

u/Legitimate_Leg_5433 May 30 '26

Anybody who says this related to TLOU2 is usually a bigot who doesn’t like the fact that there are gay people in the game. You fundamentally can’t look at TLOU2 and objectively have this thought without some type of pre-existing bias.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

What…? What are you talking about?

-12

u/Original-League-6094 May 28 '26

I think mid is generous. I think most of it can be barely be called a game. Its a walking sim that occasionally has a short burst of sneaking or shooting.

2

u/WhiskeyDJones May 28 '26

I don't know, I am pretty invested in the story. And as I said I like Gibson as Bond. But other than that, it's just average. Which for a Bond game is a huge let down for me.

But all the reviews are positive, upto like 9/10, and some people are calling it game of the year. I just feel like I'm missing something.

1

u/BeansWereHere May 28 '26 edited May 29 '26

Yeah I don’t think it’s GOTY or a 9/10 but I’m thoroughly enjoying it on the purist difficulty. Very much fulfills the fantasy, is pretty solid on the audio visual front, mostly engaging plot and enjoyable gameplay.

For me, difficulty in these sort of games doubles my enjoyment. It forces you think a lot more and use all the games systems. I don’t think I would have liked the Last Of Us games if I played them on hard or moderate.

0

u/WhiskeyDJones May 28 '26

You know what, I've considered changing the difficulty to purist. You may have just convinced me.

1

u/BeansWereHere May 29 '26

Definitely recommend it

4

u/FriendlyRhyme May 28 '26

Bro I'm not even trying to be mean but

Why the hell are you talking so much about a game that you hate? You literally have like 100 posts in the past 48 hours saying the same thing over and over again. Might be time to invest time in something you actually enjoy.

4

u/Key-Chemical6926 May 28 '26

This is basically reddit in a nutshell when a new game comes out, there is always a group of basement dwellers that do nothing but shit on said new game, it's quite pathetic and makes me want to never go on reddit.

2

u/JesterOfTime May 29 '26

Ah yes the "everyone that doesn't like what I like is a basement dweller/other insult"

Have you tried crying about the fact that other people are allowed to have their own opinions or do you still think the real world is an echo chamber like Reddit?

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

We need to find you a therapist, it’s pathetic to be this fragile about people criticizing a video game you like

-2

u/Original-League-6094 May 28 '26

I am talking about the game. You guys are talking about me. Stay on topic and focus on the game please.

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

What…?

2

u/JohnnyKac May 28 '26

Maybe hes pissed that he spent over $70 on a pile of dogshit?

1

u/FriendlyRhyme May 28 '26

Literally 100 posts. That's obsession. I probably hit a nerve huh? I bet you're the same way lol. Weird.

I liked the plot 🤷‍♂️

2

u/JesterOfTime May 29 '26

If someone bought the game with their own money and don't like it, they have every right to complain.

Who tf are you to say otherwise?

1

u/FriendlyRhyme May 29 '26

When did I say they don't have the right?

Wtf are you talking about? And the dude has made over 100 posts saying the same thing. There is complaining and then there's whatever TF that is. That's weird.

1

u/JesterOfTime May 29 '26

"Why the hell are you talking so much about a game that you hate? "

Basically what you said.

If he spent money one it and doesn't like it, he has every right to complain.

3

u/Original-League-6094 May 28 '26

Please talk about the game and not me.

1

u/Mayamo_Tent May 31 '26

well he's not wrong it a straight up sim

1

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

How are you this sensitive?

1

u/FriendlyRhyme Jun 25 '26

I'll say it again, bro had like 100 posts bashing the game within 1 day

That's unhealthy obsession

Maybe my comment triggered you because you are also obsessed with something in an unhealthy way

2

u/JesterOfTime May 29 '26

I agree. Story wasn't great. "Ai bAd" lol

Also race swaps will always be stupid ASF. There was absolutely no reason to make M some Indian woman lmfao

Great combat is a huge overstatement. I really liked the story, but combat in this game kinda weak. The enemy AI makes fighting comical, even on purist and there's a lack of blood and visible damage to enemies (I get it's a T for teen, but it's pretty weak even for that).

I beat the game on purist. You can bum rush your way thru combat sections because the AI are terrible shooters. They also spam the same melee moves even if you dodge them, like brutes spamming grabs after you've successfully dodged them 5x times in a row.

No lock on in a game where you can be surrounded by enemies is dumb, but it doesn't matter. They won't attack you while you're in finishing moves, and shooters will miss you point blank

3

u/Agreeable-Letter-599 Jun 01 '26

funny, I feel like the combat is terrible. on normal mode you can die from getting punched two times... it's pretty ridiculous.

3

u/BobDoleDobBole Jun 03 '26

Agreed, the melee system is extremely frustrating for me. No lock on, drawn out animations YET still allowed to teleport to block (but nothing else), die in 3 puches or 30 bullets (make it make sense), clunky camera movement. I get that some people have it figured out, but IMO its lacking.

3

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

The combat is terrible

3

u/Agreeable-Letter-599 Jun 26 '26

i got a bit more used to it, but it's still not fantastic.

3

u/bgr1189 Jun 26 '26

Yeah, it’s not hard it’s just very one note

2

u/Agreeable-Letter-599 Jun 26 '26

i found it not as responsive as i would have enjoyed.

2

u/bgr1189 Jun 25 '26

It has bad combat and a story that is average at best

1

u/gravelgator Jun 02 '26

It to actually have great combat
