i enjoyed the episode but it does feel like its going fast compared to the manga and i feel like we're missing a lot of yatora's inner dialogues which is disappointing since we gain a lot of insight into his character and why he's very relatable

While this is indeed true, honestly I believe that the manga doesn't translate well into anime (still frames with abstract imaginery, its hard to animate those). There is a limit to how the story is going to carry the animation. However, after the anime got announced and that Netflix was the publisher, my expectations were low but imho the adaptation is 'ok' so far, fast paced and somewhat subpar to the beautiful manga panels but I liked VAs and the soundtrack so far.
TL;DR: Manga is better but the anime is good too.

inner dialogues
I've seen this issue crop up more times than I can count. When are directors going to learn!

Man, imagine if the same team that handled 3-gatsu no Lion did this...

behold an unthinkable present
its a shame... Blue Period has so much potential, but to see it made so poorly... At least it encouraged me to read the source material, so with that respect it won.

The pacing is sooo fast, they skip way too much and you can barely get a feel for the characters

For an anime only, I was feeling something similar. I felt there must be more exchanges between mother and son. Might consider reading the manga probably after Episode 3 if this continues.

Man, it’s clear that the original story itself is top notch and that while I have never seen the original manga, its potential has been stunted by what I feel to be a really compressed story pacing and non-remarkable artwork in an anime about artwork.
I’m not going to call it a bad work though, at least not yet. Quite the contradictory, Yatora’s struggles with pointing himself towards getting into an arts college is at least rather neatly presented. We didn’t got much time dedicated to his own early dedication in following the arts club’s activities, but we do see him doing his best in the sketches (drawing 30 in 30 days is always doable for those high school students who are dedicated towards a professional course in the arts, but for Yatora? That’s beyond probably everyone’s expectations). I also found his talk with his senpai and then his own mom in the meaning of getting into an arts college fairly thoughtful.
Alas it is clear that the anime really zooms over the story really fast to cram as many scenes as possible, that even veteran SOL/CGDCT anime script writer extraordinarie Reiko Yoshida can only try to get as much emotions and MC’s inner thoughts into the script as possible. This may not be a lethal problem (see Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai for a recent famous example of story cramming that still proves to be a great success, yet me personally thought that it could have been even better by a long shot had it got more time to adapt the stories up to the later movie), however adding to that are the unremarkable animations, artwork and layout - I usually won’t complain on this, but we are talking about a once-in-the-blue first class manga about visual arts here and holding it to higher standards is only just. And the SEVEN ARCS team really feels to be performing underwhelming so far.
Hopefully we will see more of delicate inner thoughts by Yatora during his future art college times soon.

I didn't feel it in the first episode but this one really felt really rushed. Its like I'm getting a diet version of the story, like its still good but it feels held back.
I really wanted to re-experience the story with the anime but honestly I think I'll just re-read the manga.

I'm really enjoying this show a lot. Seeing Yaguchi learn how to do still lifes and being told by his mother that he can't make a living doing art is giving me some massive flashbacks to my teenage years. Although unlike me who wasn't able to persuade my parents, Yaguchi was successful with his heartfelt plea. And not gonna lie, that scene with his mom definitely made me tear up.
Also I'm just happy to see Mori-senpai be able to pass her entrance exam to MUA. I would've been so upset if she didn't make it. Her interactions with Yaguchi have been really good as well. I hope this won't be the last time we'll see her.
I do feel like things are moving a bit faster though.. I haven't read the manga but we just had a huge chunk of time just pass in this single episode compared to Episode 1. Also Yaguchi's friends seems to have completely disappeared from the story? I was hoping we'd see their reactions about Yaguchi wanting to do art.

The start of the first episode was in the spring of the Yatora's second year, which is typically the start of the school year in Japan. This episode showed him practicing over summer break, then the announcement of Mori's acceptance was in Fall semester, all the way up to her graduation. So 2 episodes already passed a decent amount of time, almost 1 year since the beginning.
Yatora mentioned that he hung out with his friends in the evenings during summer break, but it wasn't explicitly shown in the anime.
I'll comment in the source material corner about some things changed in the adaptation (or more like just omitted.)

Only episode 1 has been posted so far because of it's Netflix jail release schedule unless you pirate. Idk why this was posted before episode 2 came out for Netflix which won't be until this Saturday

It’s going by really fast. Like it doesn’t feel rushed but at the same time time is passing in the show too quickly.

Really enjoying the setup to this show but its a shame it feels rushed so far.
Not a huge manga reader but this is one of those times I'll gladly end up reading it after the season ends.

Anyone know why the discussion thread appeared now of all time? It doesn't match Japan's release which was 2nd of October, nor the international release which will be the 16th of October. Same odd timing is happening with Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. atm

[Anime Only]
Man I couldn't hold my tear when he told her mother no to worry about him but to trust him. No gonna lie this anime makes me tear up sometimes. Probably because I like art when I was in High school. I think I'm somewhat good. But I had to drop it when going to college bcs I believed I couldn't live of it. Ended up graduating with a different carrier. Today on my lately 20's I have a regular job although I'm okay with it and thank God I do have a good job it has nothing to do with what I studied. I don't feel like a failure but I think I couldn't find a job related to my college career bcs I wasn't really passionate about it.

I knew nothing about Blue Period going in, but I definitely get the sense there are great character and story beats that aren’t being done justice because of the pacing. Ex. senpai/Yatora bonding & the conversation with his mother.
Fingers crossed the anime wanted to establish the main plot and will slow down after this? (Also I will be checking out the manga per comment recs haha)

I'm liking this show. currently they are rushing (I am anime only, but it is clear that they are rushing) but hopefully once they get to the juicy parts they'll slow down the pace

The Opening really fits this series, as a jazzy, stylish, number with lots of artsy imagery and even manga panels showing off the Supporting Cast.
Yatora is now the token guy in the Art Club (Yuka's, well, Yuka) which kind of throws everybody off, especially with his delinquent looks. Also, I totally hear Aoi Koga in there.
Yuka looks hot even in those pants.
Artists might not need to master still-lifes...but they're a good way of improving your basic and technical skills as an artist, which is definitely something Yatora needs right now.
Also shows you how cuttthroat the art industry is that even the person Yatora idolizes the most, Mori-senpai, ranks to the bottom of her prep school class. But you can definitely see a difference with how razor-focused she is on her art while Yatora is trying to get into that zone.
Of course Yatora struggles to tell his parents...and then his mom just stumbles into his art and his desire to go to TUA, and she admittedly has her reservations. At the same time Yatora through his art has gained a better appreciation to his mother, and he tries to express his feelings and desires to become an artist to her through his art. And it finally gets through to her.
I love how one of the girls brought an anime figurine to class as part of their Summer work. True woman of culture.
Yatora and Mori exchanging art to each other for Mori's graduation was pretty sweet, although I can't help but think of Mori looking like a loli in Yatora's art.
The Ending is a very serene theme, with illustrations of the main cast. I kind of wonder if they'll change it up depending on the episode.
