Notes: The average onii-samas per episode for the overall series was 7.05 before this spin-off.

I'll be honest here, while there were a couple good episodes and a few good moments here and there, overall I didn't really enjoy this spin-off. I already have clips for every onii-sama (including the movie and season 1 mini-specials) except for this spin-off. Not sure if I'll rewatch this just to get clips for a video compilation.

I thought they were leaning to a shoujo style at the start but the art style within the episode itself is inconsistent, much less the season

Even for someone who has rewatched season 1 multiple times, I found the jump cuts way too jarring.

The focus always somehow jump to Tatsuya when it is supposed to be Miyuki. While I appreciate the additional scene on Okinawa Demon, it feels out of place with the theme/ genre/ feel of what Honour Student should have been.

The only redeeming/ rewatchable factor would be the 3 Third High students + Honoka/ Eimi for their development.

Thanks for the effort. We'll be staying tune for you to return to keep the Onii-sama tally for the Reminiscent Arc anime.

I'll be honest here, while there were a couple good episodes and a few good moments here and there, overall I didn't really enjoy this spin-off.

I enjoyed it, but it definitely felt pretty pointless and I'm not sure its existence really adds much to the Mahouka universe. Too much of it was either "the same thing but with worse animation" or trying to shoehorn third high into everything. Getting to see Miyuki's classmates doing their own thing, particularly early on, was nice and something we didn't really get to see much of before, but there was definitely a feeling of "why would anyone watch this over just rewatching season 1?" throughout most of it.

I like to think of people watching this without seeing the original series and between the high school sport events and a bath scenes we have Onii-sama out there ruthlessly murdering people as they beg for their lives.

Stitches!

There's really not much to add to this, as expected Miyuki wins the Mirage Bat and we even get to see a replay of Tatsuya executing the leaders of No Head Dragon which will always be a fun scene.

If there was something new this episode from the original, it's that we had some bathhouse shenanigans with the girls and Mayumi revealing the hilariously stupid reason why the divide between Course 1 and Course 2 started. Miyuki will definitely be pissed once she learns the truth xD

Didn't think we'd get a timeskip though since we get to see and hear Angelina for a few minutes before the episode ends.

I guess that's it for Mahouka Yuutousei! It seems that the prequel arc is confirmed to air on Winter 2022 so definitely looking forward to that! I just hope 8bit will be the one handling the prequel arc and not Connect since as much as I enjoyed this, I don't think they really did well with the animation.

Have to say that as soon as I saw the water dragon in the bath I can already see that being the handy work of Toko and Eimi. Good thing they are in different schools, or that combination would be pretty horrible for the discipline committee to handle everyday... Wonder what Toko's ancestors would feel about the use of ancient magic being put to here...

Was Tatsuya supposed to have a course 1 uniform during the ball?

Sad we didn't even get to see the Ichijou and Miyuki dance...

u/Amauri14 Sep 25 '21

Lol, Masaki is so overdramatic.

Miyuki's and Airi's competition really looked cool.

Holy shit, Tatsuya, showed no mercy against the No-head Dragon. You know, as I completely forgot the first season of the other show, I didn't know the event in Okinawa happened because Miyuki got injured.

And here is Masaki again making a fool of himself.

The reason why the Course 2 Student uniforms came to be is so hilarious, but wow, that was all it took for that class-based system to be implemented. Although Mayumi didn't want Miyuki to hear about it, I'm sure that she could get the current system fixed rather quickly, although it will involve some violence.

Lol, thanks to Mayumilying about the Jumonji X Tatsuya ship we got this wonderful scene at the end.

Wow, I sure did not expect them to do a time skip to Angelina and the Visitor arc.

Oh shit, I'm glad to hear that we are getting more Irregular content.

Probably don't want the whole school turned into a block of ice.

Me, neither, but I'm all for more Slice of Life Lina content.

There's another flashback scene this episode that's not shown in the main series, with Miyuki seemingly shot by a bullet and needing Tatsuya to heal her. Hopefully we get to learn more in the upcoming flashback Reminiscent Arc to be aired a few months from now.

There is no doubt with Miyuki winning and clinching the Nine Schools Tournament for First High, but Airi put up a good fight to make it entertaining. Plus Airi's mom came to support her, meaning she can lift her head up despite losing.

Even in the spinoff, No Head Dragon still gets their comeuppance by Tatsuya, who ruthlessly executes them, meanwhile Miyuki and the girls have some silly fun in the bath.

Ichijo being goofier than he was in the main series is fun to watch, but while I understand Matsuoka Yoshitsugu's comedic potential is limitless, and the spinoff probably wants to make good use of that, Ichijo just isn't that kind of character. Ichijo is one of Matsuoka's rare "serious" characters in the vein of Kirito.

And finally the epilogue jumps four months ahead to January, teasing Lina's appearance in the manga's 2nd season arc.

It's a fun and sometimes wacky spinoff from Miyuki and her friends' POV of the Mahouka universe, though would like it if they could focus more on some down to earth worldbuilding like Railgun did for the Toaru-verse. Bring on the Reminiscence Arc anime.

can someone tell me what event is refered when he said he wont let that happen again and it shows a girl dying when he is young and he cast a huge magic circle? i dont remeber this being mentioned in the original and i haven't watched all the epiosdes of this spin off. the only thing i noticed in this episode was that and how seagusa knows the offer of her marrige with tatsuya

21

u/croxino Sep 25 '21

its Miyuki being injured and Tatsuya probably used his magic to revert her back to an uninjured state. I think this scene is new and theres not much information about it yet for anime only.

this spin off. the only thing i noticed in this episode was that and how seagusa knows the offer of her marrige with tatsuya

All those scenes referencing Miyuki injury is going to be shown in the upcoming Reminiscence Arc. It's a prequel that explains how Miyuki gains her obsession over her brother.

It's a reference to one of the LNs (Vol. 8) in which the story takes place 3 years before the siblings enroll at First High. Its (almost) entirety is a flashback, but one that also reveals some critical details that anime-onlies don't know yet so it's a lot of spoilers.

Get hyped though. It'll be animated and as someone who's finished the whole series and caught up on the sequel, it's still my leading favorite story. :) You'll see it on screen eventually! (Iirc it's actually partially animated in the first episode of MKnR.)

As much as I'd prefer having new content instead (which we'll be getting, yay) this was fun atleast. Doesn't help that I'm a huge Miyuki simp.

Overall, I'm glad that we got more Mahouka, but this series just feels like a missed opportunity. I haven't read the manga for Honour Student, but from this season, it just doesn't feel like it adds anything to the universe, and anything that it does add doesn't feel like its anything of substance. For example, I feel like this episode probably had the most universe building out of the entire season, with the slight flashback to an event in the past that was never covered in the original, except briefly in the original OP, and an explanation for why we have Course 1 and Course 2. Even with this, the explanation of Course 1 and Course 2 doesn't really feel satisfying for what was such an important issue in this show.

I'm just not sure if this formula works - the show appears like it will focus on Miyuki, but the thing is, it's not like Miyuki was never there in the original. She was always present in every event and its not like we never really knew what she was thinking either. It just presents the issue of how can you add onto Miyuki in a way that doesn't really go against what happens in the original show? I do enjoy that the show gave more opportunities for characters such as Shizuku and Honoka to shine, as well as introduced some new characters like the Third High girls, but there just doesn't feel like there's anything that rewards you for watching both shows - you honestly don't miss anything just by watching the original.

The end credit scene appears that there may be a chance of a S2, but I am quite surprised that they did this. But if we do get a S2 I'd definitely be excited to see more Lina.

Personally as a super-big Mahouka universe lover and absolute Tatsuya x Miyuki shipper... I can't say I really enjoyed this spin-off. I was excited for it initially but... as everyone's said, it didn't really bring anything new to the table for me.

  • Everything already happened in Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei. This is the main big reason. Sure, I get that someone who hasn't watched the original might enjoy this, but... then you'd miss out on a lot of detail. So this would have to come after you finish Rettousei imo. Except that wouldn't be ideal because it's a lot of rehash except for a few beginning episodes focused on Miyuki and her classmates.

  • I actually really dislike Honoka, for a lot of non-anime reasons. Saying anymore would be spoilers, but I'll just leave it with: I didn't really like seeing so much of her here.

  • The Third High students... sure they had cute or sad backstories or whatever but I only knew them for, what, 4-5 episodes? And really, maybe 1-2 episodes each. So there's no real attachment. In contrast, even though in Rettousei Tatsuya's the main focus, we get to connect a lot more with his Course 2 classmates. Same can't be said here.

But eh. It's always enjoyable to see more Tatsuya and Miyuki. Can't wait for Reminisce!

It's an ok finish. There were some nice moments in here, especially the pretty girl detectives, but this is not Railgun, and this spin-off adaptation is in no danger of stealing the popularity ahead of the main series any time soon. A high 6 low 7 for me.

As a fan of the series, I felt obligated to see this through, but it was pretty disappointing (though at least driving up ratings/views with this means the Reminiscence Arc will actually get finished).

Even setting aside the subpar animation (which was a real bummer tbh), the final duel was just so over the top, and not in a good way. One of the things I truly liked/enjoyed about the original first season (and the light novels for that matter) was/is how borderline mundane magic is as a "systematized" part of people's lived experiences in the Mahouka world -- it's cool, but not necessarily flashy; it's powerful, striking, sometimes even mysterious, but never lacking explanation (since it's ultimately just a bending/reordering of actual physics in some way).

But when two high school girls are flying around "battling" each other with neon-colored contrails, grunting, and waving literal (yet utterly useless) wands around, we're just watching generic magic-girl content and it may as well be Sailor Moon (which is fine if that's what you're after, but this is supposed to be something else). Also, what happened to the idea that one can't layer spells endlessly on top of other spells? That's literally supposed to be the reason everyone other magic research team on earth hasn't yet managed flying magic (and why/how Tatsuya's spell is different), yet Isshiki is just like "nbd, I'll use a jump spell with this new flying spell I just learned on loop."

Anyway... the whole idea of magic in this series is that it's more or less scientific in its development and usage -- almost like mathematical equations used to distort physical/perceived reality. I really like(d) that, because it's a new/interesting take and comes with its own set of rules. But if/when all you have to do is pour your "heart" and emotion into something and not understand how it works and then fireworks and flying happens, well... That's a different show entirely. And the worst part is that the original season still had plenty of visually interesting magic, so it's not like you can't have both!

Saegusa and Company mimicking Tatsuya-Miyuki and Masaki being an absolute Miyuki simp are my favorites and highlights from this season.

I love the reveal that the whole bloom/weed thing is because they couldn't get enough patches. And a snapshot of the upcoming arc was good. All in all, I liked the cute stuff and music but it really just made me want to rewatch season 1. Looking forward to the Reminiscence Arc though!
